Chapter 16 - Invasion of Privacy!
Kendall let out a breath. She hadn't realised she'd been holding in. She then turned to Jordan.
Jordan was trying to read her expressions. He was hoping of all the times he got it wrong, this wouldn't be it. Slowly he lifted his hand to her cheek, half expecting Kendall to brush it away, but she didn't. Instead, Kendall leaned into his touch and smiled sadly at him.
"Kenny," he whispered. "What happened?"
"Ah fuck", she thought to herself. She dropped her bag onto the garage roof as she was sneaking back in. It made a dull thud that resonated throughout the house. She was hoping against hope it wasn't going to wake her parents up. She could not deal with either of them now.
Especially her dad. Lately, he'd been acting differently. He was crankier, quickly snapping and always seemed to be working. This wasn't like him at all. All her life, she'd known him as being laid back, happy go lucky and at times childish.
Out of all the parents, hers were the most laid back and understanding. It hadn't even been two months since they found her dad and Estelle smoking weed together. Kendall barely kept her laugh in remembering how livid her Uncle Bennett had been.
She loved the fact they all laughed about it in the end. Kendall always admired her dad's ability to understand stuff like that, he was always easy-going, and it just meant the kids trusted him.
Now it seemed almost impossible to tell him anything. He wasn't listening anymore, just demanding to know where she goes and who she's with at all times.
She tried talking to her mom about it, but it seemed like her parents were on the same page, she'd seen them many times whispering to one another intently about something, but they'd never tell her.
Kendall had made it into her room. As she was closing the window, the light was switched on. She braced herself before turning around. This was going to get messy.
"Where were you," he didn't yell it, which made it worse. Kendall could feel the anger coming off her father in waves. It was almost 3 am which Kendall knew was an idiotic time to be coming home. She had just got caught up okay. She turned around to see him standing there.
He was still in jeans and a jacket, meaning he had probably just arrived home. Leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed, he waited for her response. "So, where were you?"
"I was with G and E,"
"Nice try. Where were you?"
"It's the truth!" Even though Kendall knew it wasn't.
"Don't lie to me to Kendall. I know you asked them both to cover for you,"
"I was with them-"
Jordan snapped. "Don't lie to me!" he bellowed, causing Kendall to flinch.
That's when Kendall noticed her desk was messy. Her laptop was open, showing her messages to her friends asking them to cover for her. She knew for a fact she had it locked before she left.
"You went through my stuff?" She asked slowly. She could feel the anger rising.
Jordan looked away, still seething at her defiance. "I had to make sure you weren't up to-"
"So you invaded my privacy?!"
He looked back up at her, green eyes narrowing at her. Kendall rarely saw her father angry, and when she did, it was frightening. However, this time, she was running on her own anger, furious at the fact he'd gone through her stuff.
"I can't believe you-" She then stopped short. She walked over to her laptop, opening the second tab. It was a concert poster, stating the date, time and place of when the band would perform. If her father did check her laptop, he would have found this first.
"You would have seen this first. You already knew where I was," she stated, turning to show him the concert poster.
His eyes widened slightly before answering. "I had to make sure, plus," his eyes narrowed again. "You lied regardless,"
"It's because you don't seem to believe me when I tell you the truth anymore. You don't trust me,"
"I do trust you,"
"Oh really," she laughed. "Well, you have a funny way of showing it. Why did you really go through my laptop? What were you looking for?"
Jordan tsked and looked away. "This conversation is over. You're grounded, by the way,"
Kendall knew there was something he wasn't telling her. She kept pushing. "Why did you go through it?! It's pretty ironic you want me to tell you the truth when you don't tell me shit all-"
"Kendall!" he bellowed, causing her to jump. "I will not tell you again. You are not to leave this house unless it's school, okay!"
"I hate you!" She seethed. "God, I wish you weren't my dad,"
Jordan's eyes widened again at the words before a cold look settled onto his face. Both daughter and dad stared one another down.
"Same here,"
"Yeah, so we had a pretty nasty fight," she turned to Jordan. The entire time he had been quiet, not moving a muscle. He stared down at the rug, not saying anything.
She watched him for a while, wondering what he was thinking. Was he going to tell her he was right, and she was wrong again? She didn't want to start another fight.
Part of the reason she wanted to talk to him first place despite Gabrielle and Estelle protest's was that she missed talking to him. She missed him. They had a fantastic relationship, and she missed just hanging out.
She hated the role she'd taken up as the rebellious teenager. She knew Gabrielle hated it too, and so did Estelle, deep down. They all wanted their dads back.
"I said that to you?" Jordan asked no one but himself.
Tentatively she put her arm on his shoulder; he turned to face her finally. His face was ashen with worry, regret...sadness. Kendall's heart was breaking at the sight of him. If his younger self was this worried about her now, what was her father thinking in their timeline.
"Dad, I'm sorry for-" But Jordan cut her off by pulling her into a hug. He knew she needed it. She hardly blinked back the tears that were threatening to spill. "Shhh, it's okay, everything will be okay, I'm here," he comforted, to which Kendall cried harder, the familiar words rang through her head. She's heard them countless times before.
"I didn't mean to, I'm sorry," she cried into his shirt. Jordan had shifted his body to face her, moving her onto his lap as he hugged her closer. She felt like a child again. It was oddly comforting.
Jordan didn't know why but he felt this was the right thing to do. He could feel his paternal instincts kick in, wanting to comfort his child as she broke down in front of him.
It was the same feeling he had back when he was distracted by a punch to his face. When he looked back again, he saw his daughter on the floor. He didn't want to let her go now. This world wasn't safe enough for his baby.
Jordan's own eyes pricked with tears. He didn't think he'd ever say those words to his daughter, and yet he did.
They stayed like that for a while. Eventually, Kendall collected herself and sat back onto the couch so she could face Jordan properly.
"Seems like I haven't been able to get over my paranoia," Jordan stated, still stroking Kendall's hair. "I don't think I should have been a dad in the first place,"
"That's not true," Kendall cut in. "I mean, your paranoia is a problem, but it doesn't make you less worthy of being a father,"
Jordan snorted at this, they both let out a little chuckle.
"Dad, I never gave you a reason not to trust me, but I don't know... recently, it's like you're scared. Scared something will happen to us, and you want to protect us, and you're trying to do that by taking away our privacy," Kendall let out, not knowing how to phrase it.
"But what you're really doing is pushing me away. Your paranoia is pushing me away,"
Jordan looked at her. He knew she was right. Whatever was happening in the future, he knew he was going through her stuff because he was scared.
"But, I also understand now," Kendall finished. Jordan tilted his head in confusion. "Today proved it. You're part of a gang. You're worried someone's back looking for revenge, aren't you?"
Jordan didn't know what to say. How could he tell his daughter he was in a gang now? Surely there was a reason his future self didn't tell her. What would she think of him?
But he could also see not telling her was leading to these awful fights. It wasn't worth it.
"I just wish you would have told me that instead of lying about it, I wish I waited long enough to hear your explanation, but it never came,"
"I'm sorry, I am Kendall. I guess if you guys knew, you'd understand why I'm acting the way I am," Jordan said. "But at the same time, I don't like how we would look in your eyes if we told you about the gang stuff,"
"I'll always love you," she said.
"I love you too," he replied solemnly. Then he thought about it for a moment. "You said today proved it. Did you have suspicions?"
"Yeah, I went through your laptop because Estelle thought she heard the three of you discuss it one time. You had this one file which was protected heavily labelled 4M stuff," She admitted.
Jordan was shocked. "You went through my stuff?"
"Hey! That's an invasion of privacy!" She mocked, stealing the words from him. "Yeah, join the club."
The two laughed at that, the conversation easing slightly. Jordan watched her laughing. He was glad she was smiling again. Wallace's did look much better, smiling.
He then took both her hands in his, looking back up at her. "Kendall, if that's true and someone is back, and after you, then you must understand we are doing it for your safety," He paused slightly, looking away from her.
"And I think today, my worst nightmare came true. I can't unsee you lying there and me not being able to help. I know you're fully capable of looking after yourself, but I can't handle you being hurt,"
"I know, I understand. I'm sorry." She said, looking away. He raised one hand to hold her jaw, turning it back to him slightly.
"I hope we can work this out in the future. I want you to be able to come to me about things. I want you to trust me again, have a little patience with me, God knows you'll need it,"
"We will, Dad, I promise. Plus, I won't be sneaking out again anytime soon,"
Jordan laughed. "That's good, and I hope my future self won't go through your stuff again,"
Kendall leaned in and kissed her father on his cheek. "I know it's difficult for you, but I promise you I won't leave you, dad. I'll always be there."
Jordan smiled at her before pulling her into another hug. "And I'll always be there for you,"
The two hugged it out before Jordan asked. "So... about your mom?"
Kendall just groaned.
