Chapter 3
Sam's PoV
05:03.
Why is the phone ringing at five in the morning?
My eyes felt heavy as I rolled out of bed, barely conscious as I headed to the bunker's phone and picked it up. Since Dean and I had moved in here, I don't think I'd heard this phone ring at all so it took me a moment to even work out what was ringing as it did so. Everyone we knew and had done cases with had our mobile numbers, so I knew this person wasn't going to be someone we were friends with.
"Err Hello?" I answered as I rubbed my eyes with my fingers before running my hand through my hair.
"Hello. I'm Benjamin calling from the British Men of Letters, to whom am I speaking with?" My eyes widened suddenly as the British accent rang in my ear.
"I'm Sam. Sam Winchester." I answered, noting Dean shuffling through the door looking less than happy that we had been woken up so early in the morning. He clutched two cups of steaming coffee.
"As in the family of Henry Winchester?" Benjamin asked, his voice cagey as he spoke to me. Who was this guy? And why were the British men of letters calling here?
"Yeah, we are his grandchildren. My brother and I." Dean was now beside me with a confused look on his face. He put a coffee down in front of me and I took a huge sip. I covered the mouthpiece of the phone and turned to Dean. "British men of Letters." I quickly filled him in.
"What the hell do they want?" He said, his voice croaky from just waking up. He rubbed his hands in his hair as he let out a yawn. I merely shrugged.
"Great. I'm here to ask a favour." Benjamin said, his voice serious and stern. "You know much about vampires?" My eyebrows narrowed as I repeated him.
"Vampires?" I double checked. Dean looked at me with confusion once again.
"Yes. Do you know anything about them?" Benjamin wasted no time in trying to get his answers.
"We've hunted those for years!" I laughed. "Chop off the head to kill them. They can be in nests. What do you need to know?" Dean remained by my side as he sipped his coffee, wondering who was calling and why they were calling here, especially asking about vampires.
"Hunted?" Benjamin asked. "You're hunters and men of Letters?"
"Pretty much." I began. "Look, this is great and all but is there actually a reason you called us at five in the morning?" I fidgeted in the chair, wishing this call was over so I could go back to bed.
"Actually yes. A friend of mine, in Lockhart. She's come across a nest." Benjamin began and I rolled my eyes. We had better things to do than teach kids how to hunt. If they don't know what they're doing then they shouldn't be doing it.
"Yeah, and?" My patience had worn thin now and I was desperate to get off the phone and try to go back to sleep.
"She doesn't know any other hunters. It's a nest of ten. She needs assistance. I've called everyone I can but no one can do it. You're my last hope." Benjamin listed off what he needed to quickly. I could feel the tension as he waited for my answer which he hoped and prayed was going to be a yes.
"How long has she hunted for? How likely is it that what she's seen is the truth? Lockhart is hours from here and I don't want to waste a journey for some newbie." I snapped. I didn't mean to, but truth be told I was tired after our hunt last night and to be woken up this early was something only the devil would find good.
"She's a great hunter. She's been doing it for years and she knows what she's doing. Trust me." Once again I covered the mouthpiece as I spoke to Dean.
"This men of Letters guy is saying there's a case his friend is on; nest of ten vamps. She needs help to take them down. It's in Lockhart." I ran it by him. He hesitated as he thought but finally gave a shrug and nodded. I turned back to the phone and removed my hand from it. "Alright, myself and my brother will be down to help but if this turns out to be a waste of time then I'll be having words with you. Send over the details to my email and mobile and we'll start heading over now." Benjamin let out a sigh of relief before his demeanour changed.
"Oh wow. Thank you so much. This means a lot. She will be so happy. I'll send the info over now and I'll let her know. Have a good journey." Benjamin said before his goodbyes. I hung up the phone and downed the rest of my coffee.
"You know what Lockhart is supposed to be good for?" Dean said with a childish smirk as I stood up, heading towards my room to pack.
"No, Dean. What?" I stopped and turned to him with an eyebrow raised.
"Barbecue." He said with a smile as he rushed off to get his bag and load up the car. I sighed and shook my head, going back to my room to get everything ready for this trip which I pray is not a waste of our time.
