Chapter 7: Betrayal
{Kat's Point of view}
A little girl looked up at the brown-haired smiling scientist looking down on her.
"Miss Haydes? Did you come to play with me this time?" The little girl blinked her sweet chocolate eyes at the scientist in front of her.
"Not this time sweetie." She smiles sympathetically as the little girl's face fell with disappointment, "but it's more of a 'activity.' "
The girl perked up instantly, "what activity?"
The woman held a finger to her lips as she smiled slightly. "Something super-duper- secret. I'm not allowed to say, just know that it'll be really fun."
"Doctor Haydes? Is number one-hundred-and-seventeen ready for their inoculation yet? Time and money is being wasted each second longer you stay in there!" A loudspeaker suddenly went off, nearly frightening the girl out of her skin.
"Miss Haydes? What did that man mean?" The girl blinked her eyes innocently at the brown-haired woman.
"It's nothing sweetie." She soothed as she gave the girl's hand a tight squeeze. "The doctors are just going to- um- fix you, you need to get some rest so you can stay healthy."
"Fix me? Whats wrong? Am I sick?" The girl comprehensively asked, her brown eyes round with worry.
Doctor Haydes's eyes were full of remorse as she lightly ran her fingers through the little girl's dirty blonde hair. "Yes dear, you need all the rest you can get. You'll wake up feeling like a changed girl tomorrow, I'm sure of it."
The girl, who was by then lying on her white bed, sleepily closed her eyes. The scientist smiled at this as she slowly got up and made her way to the door. Her hand was on the doorknob when the girl's head shot up.
"Miss Haydes?" She mumbled sleepily, her eyes only half open.
"Yes dear?" She blinked patiently at the girl, her hand still on the doorknob handle.
"Can you tuck me in? I'm not that comfortable." She blinked slowly as she gave the woman a lop-sided grin.
Miss Haydes nodded slightly as she walked over the girl and she quickly, delicately, tucked the little five-year-old into bed. Right before she got up, she gave her a quick kiss on the forehead. As soon as she touched the doorknob handle, the girl interrupted her yet again.
"Goodnight, Mommy, I love you." She yawned as she closed her eyes and the rise-and-fall of her chest shown that she quickly fell asleep.
Doctor Haydes stood there in amazement as she gripped the door handle harder. Did number One-hundred-and-seventeen call her 'Mommy?'
She blinked multiple times as she opened the door and left the white room. A large black man saw her and he immediately walked over to her.
"Did you get everything ready like you were supposed to?" He asked as he gave her a hard stare.
She nodded, staring off into space, her eyes troubled.
"Good," he nodded tersely, "we'll begin right away."
While he walked away to go get the others, Doctor Haydes stood still, a single tear rolled down her cheek.
"I'm so sorry." She managed to croak before she fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
~~~~~
"How could you do this to me?" I shrieked as I scored my claws down the side of a tree bark.
"Kat, what's wrong?" Cloud opened her eyes as she gave me a soft, sympathetic look. "Was it another bad dream?"
I nodded, unable to answer as I felt hot, sticky tears creep into my eyes.
That wasn't a 'bad dream' or a 'nightmare.' It was a memory.
Now you all may be freaking out or something about what the heck is going on. Well, to sum things up: that girl was me. What was that scientist doing and why did she feel so guilty? Well, that's something you're going to have to figure out for yourself. It's to painful to recall, I even have scars to remind me of the pain. Who was that woman? I'd rather not say. Besides, you don't need to know her anyways. If you're going to read this little 'diary thingy' I made and feel sorry for me, the least you could do is not make my life any harder than it already is.
"I'm sorry Kat, I know it's been hard for you." She blinked slowly while I gave a long stretch, my back popping a lot.
"Yeah, especially when I have to sleep in this back-bender-construction called a tree." I joked playfully while Cloud rolled her eyes.
Alright, I'll admit I'm a bit of a grump, like, all day. But in the mornings I'm actually pretty nice. I know, weird right?
Cloud and I looked each other in the eyes and we nodded. We turned to the sleeping lumps of fur a branch above us. Midnight was curled into a tight ball, the tip of her fluffy tail lightly touching her nose. Skittlez, on the other hand, was all sprawled out over her branch in a very uncomfortable position.
"Ready for another lesson?" Cloud grinned as she jumped off the branch and landed on the ground, feet first, with a dull thud.
"Oh please," I groaned as I joined her at the bottom, "it's hopeless, why do you keep trying?"
"Just because they clipped your wings doesn't mean you'll never fly. It'll grow back sometime here soon." She stated matter-o-factly.
After about thirty minutes of another unsuccessful lesson, I flopped down on the soft green grass, panting hard.
"It's no use," I almost screamed, "those scientists didn't know what they were doing when they gave me wings. It obviously can't support my body weight. I'm just another failed experiment to them!"
"That's it!" Cloud snapped as she stood up. She grabbed me by my sweaty shirt and pulled me close to her face. "I'm sick of you having no self respect! You are not a failure! Of course your wings can support your body weight, they just need to heal. You may think that the scientists are ignorant, but they are very intelligent. You're luckier then you think, Kat, you were born with the gift of flight. Other humans would kill to have that." By now she was gasping for breath, not used to talking this much.
I stood my ground and gave her one of my signature death looks. It's actually much easier then glaring, probably because I used my death glare almost every day, but, oh well.
"I need some fresh air." I sighed loudly as I walked farther into the dark forest, leaving Cloud behind.
"Help me." A very faint whisper in my ear made me jump.
"Alright, Midnight, cut it out, it's not funny!" I snarled as I lashed my tail. Silence.
"Whoever is there, come out now, I'm not afraid of you." I pressed myself against a tree and started to scan my surroundings. Nothing was there.
"Why did you do this to me?" The whisper came again and the small furs on my tail bristled in fear.
"Never to forget. Never to forgive. Always alone." The whispers started to chant those three things over and over, taunting me.
"Stop it!" I cried as I covered my ears, trying to block them out, which only made them chant louder. I quickly pulled my hands away from my ears and stole a quick glance. They were covered in blood. Those stupid things are so loud they made my ears bleed! I closed my eyes and waited for the sounds to decrease.
"Kat? Kat!" Cloud's voice made me open my eyes. Her hands were on my shoulders and she was shaking them vigorously.
"Don't run off like that, I thought you were caught. Kat, I thought they took you back to the-" Cloud started to speak, tears formed in her eyes.
"Hey, it's alright. None of us are going back, not willingly or by force." I soothed as I awkwardly patted her shoulder, which is the most moral support you'll get out of me.
She sniffled as she wiped her damp eyes. She stole a quick glance at me and she couldn't help but gasp. "What happened to your ears?"
I contemplated on whether I should tell her about the voices or not. Finally, I decided I shouldn't tell her. Some things you need to figure out for yourself.
"Bad ear infection I'm guessing." I shrugged nonchalantly. "Besides, it doesn't hurt to bad."
Those were two lies. One: I know exactly what made my ears bleed; those stupid voices, I'm going to have to find out what was going on. Two: My ears hurt like heck, and that means they really freaking hurt.
"Okay, let's just head back to camp, Skittlez and Midnight will be waking up any minute now and I don't want them to start freaking out." Cloud sighed as she led me back to camp while I covered my ears and started stumbling from the pain.
She stopped, "Kat, I thought you said it didn't hurt that bad?"
"You know I'm stubborn!" I wanted to yell at her, but I held it in. Everyone who has even met me once should know that.
"I know, and I meant it." I lied as I gritted my teeth to stop from screaming.
"You stupid stubborn-winged-cat, you're not fooling anyone. It's quite obvious that you're in pain. Come on, I'll help you get back to camp." She sighed with slight annoyance as she forcefully pushed her shoulder under mine, forcing me to lean against her.
I opened my mouth to protest but I was to exhausted that I couldn't speak.
~~~~~
"Another ear injury, you two need to be more careful." Skittlez warned as she lightly touched my right ear, which pounded like crazy. Her voice was quite faint and I had to strain my left ear to even hear her. Yep, my right eardrum burst. Yippee.
"So, I know my left ear will never fully heal, and Kat, your eardrum will heal itself. We need to get a move on though." Cloud spoke while she stared at the starry night-black sky.
I opened my mouth, about to say that I agreed with her when a stinging pain suddenly hit the back of my head. I fell onto my hands and knees and I gasped in shock.
I tried to turn around but my head felt like it weighed five-hundred pounds and the world turned dark. Oh no, not again.
~~~~~
"Did you come to make me feel better?" The little girl sat up in her bed and gave the scientists' in front of her a hopeful look.
The first scientist, a man with latex gloves, gasped while he dropped the needle that he was holding, making it burst into a million pieces on the floor. "You're awake?"
"Of course, I can't wait to start feeling better. Miss Haydes said I was sick and you guys are going to help me get better." She grinned cheerfully, her dark-brown eyes shining.
Suddenly, a large black man in a white lab coat stepped forward. He gave the girl a dangerous smile before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a needle.
"Oh, what's that one used for?" The little girl's eyes were wide with fascination as she looked at the needle.
The black man's smile turned into a frown as he noticed the girl's excitement. "Listen kid," he began with a snarl, making her jump. "I don't know what Doctor Haydes told you, but she's a lying rat. She obviously doesn't love you enough to tell you the truth."
"Simon, that's enough!" A third scientist, a lady with bright orange hair, snapped at the black man.
"No," he hissed. "This brat deserves to know the truth." He gave the little girl an unstable smile as he stepped towards her, pulling the cap off the needle.
The girl backed away from him slowly, about to fall off the bed. "Miss Haydes would never lie to me, she loves me plenty. You're just a bad man." Her voice was high-pitched and squeaky.
Simon leaned in close to her face and softly whispered in her ear, "of course she's lying. You're not sick."
"Yes I am." She protested, feeling a little dread in the pit of her stomach.
"No, but you are about to feel some pain!" He laughed maniacally as he painfully injected the needle into the girl's arm.
"Simon, what did you do?" The two other scientists gasped as they watched the little girl, who was grinning cheerfully not to long ago, now writhing in agony.
"I did what I was told to do, give number one-hundred-and-seventeen it's DNA injection." Simon shrugged casually, as if the girl's cries of pain didn't faze him at all.
"I can't look." The first scientist whimpered as he covered his ears and shut his eyes tight.
"Wasn't Ragdoll-feline DNA enough?" The scientist with bright orange hair whispered as she clung to the first scientist, wincing each time a spasm passed through the girl's body.
"Help me!" The girl screeched in pain while spasms continued to pass through her body.
"Cat!" Doctor Haydes screamed as she burst into the white room, her eyes fell on the little girl and tears formed in her eyes. "Why did this have to happen?" Her voice came as a faint whisper.
Suddenly, there came a sickening ripping sound and the girl screamed at the top of her lungs. "ITHURTSSOMUCH!" She managed to slur.
Two large slits opened up on her back and out sprouted two small red wings.
"You idiots!" Simon snapped at the other three scientists in the room. "I told you the boss wanted it to have Golden-eagle DNA, not stupid Robin DNA!"
"Um, sir? Her wings are not red, they're just covered in blood. We need to clean it off first." The scientist with orange hair spoke up softly.
"Are you calling me stupid?" Simon snarled as he turned to glare at her.
"No no, not at all!" She responded quickly, her eyes wide.
While Simon continued to yell at his two assistants, the little girl weakly turned her head to look at Doctor Haydes.
"You. lied. to. me." She managed to croak, tears filled her eyes.
"I only wanted to protect you." Doctor Haydes sniffled, pain filled her gaze.
"Well you didn't do a very good job at that, now did you?" The little girl countered, while her voice was still raspy her eyes were full of anger, maybe even something more.
"Of course I want to protect you, I had no say-so in this at all! How painful do you think this was for me? I love you Cat, that's why from now on I'm going to be your keeper." Doctor Haydes blinked back tears as she tried to grin, which she failed.
"Love me? I don't think you could ever love a bird." The girl's throat felt dry and her whole body still ached.
"No no, sweetie, you're not a bird." She protested as she reached for the girl's hair, about to smooth it out, when the girl violently slapped her hand away with all the energy she had.
"I am a bird, look at these!" She pointed her finger at her two bloody wings. With her voice now fully back, she continued to start screaming. "I hate you! Don't EVER touch me again!"
"I'm so sorry, Cat, you didn't deserve this. Even if you hate me, I'll always love you." Doctor Haydes bowed her head in shame as she left the room, leaving the little girl all alone with the three scientists.
And it was that day forth that the little girl vowed to never trust anyone ever again.
~~~~~
The memory faded and I blinked back tears as sunlight flooded my gaze.
"Kat, get out of there!" Midnight yelled faintly, shocking me back into reality.
Instinct made me quickly jump out of the way. I felt a whoosh of air go by my left cheek and fury rushed over me, replacing my shock and fear from the terrible memory I had. I whirled around to face my attacker and I came face-to-face with a metal robot.
"Destroy failures." It spoke in a garbled, robotic voice.
"Are you sure I'm the failure? At least I can talk right." I snorted as I took a defensive stance, ready to fight it off if it attacked me again.
It suddenly lunged at me and I swerved out of it's way.
"Hah, that's the best you can do?" I taunted as my fist connected with its arm, tearing it off. This thing must've been very fragile for me to cut its arm off. I didn't even use like- a quarter of my strength.
"System failure, commencing shut down." It garbled robotically as it suddenly dropped limply to the forest floor.
What was that thing?
"Guys, we need to get a move-on, now!" Skittlez yelled as I felt someone tightly grab my wrist and drag me forward. I yanked my arm back and came face-to-face with the person I dreaded seeing ever again.
"Doctor Haydes." I greeted her non-to-friendly as I gave her an ice-cold glare, trying my hardest to keep anything but steel out of my voice.
"Kat, come on!" I heard Midnight scream as she, Cloud, and Skittlez appeared from the bushes, concern and urgency on their faces as they saw my aggressive and stiff face.
"No, go ahead, I'll catch up in a sec." I nodded at Doctor Haydes as I smirked evilly, "this won't take long at all."
Still clearly concerned, they nodded unenthusiastically as they disappeared into the bushes again, leaving me all alone with that devil.
"Please come back, ChirpyCat, I promise you'll be treated better, no more torture. Please, come back, everyone misses you, I miss you." Her words sounded almost sincere and I had to fight the urge to leap into her warm, inviting arms.
"No, Stephanie Haydes, I will not go back, not now, not ever. No one misses me, and you definitely don't, stop lying to yourself, it'll save you the pain." Even I thought I sounded a little to harsh, and that's saying something.
After I said that things grew silent between us. A thousand words ran through my mind and I had to shut my eyes to keep my emotions from spewing out.
And then, at that very second, one emotion escaped. Yep, you probably guessed it: Blinding rage. Why did I say blinding rage? You'll found out.
Without a word, I unsheathed my small claws. I let out a deep breath, already regretting what I was about to do.
Doctor Haydes (or Stephanie, whichever floats your boat) looked at my claws and she gave a small shudder. "ChirpyCat, don't you-"
"That's not my name! It's Kat!" I suddenly screeched as I lunged her, her eyes wide with shock. I closed my eyes again, the only way I could keep the tears from falling. I swiped at her shoulder at full strength, just as a warning to not mess with me. Guess I didn't have the best aim when I had my eyes closed.
A gargled scream made me open my eyes. Now, I won't go to into detail with this, mostly because it's a memory I try to forget. But when I say I have a bad aim with my eyes closed, I wasn't lying. It wasn't her shoulder that I ended up swiping at, it was her throat. What was she gargling on? Yep, blood.
"Oh my God." I managed to breathe, trying my hardest not to faint at the terrifying sight. "I-I didn't mean to do that!"
Something told me (could have been my voice, could have been my subconscious mind, I still don't know to this day) that I needed to get out of there now, and I agreed without protesting.
"Guys, wait up!" I yelled a little to loudly as I charged into the bushes after our little rag-tag-group. I was blindly running through the dark forest, dry tears caked my face and my clothes were shredded, the rest of the clothes that I still had on my body was covered in blood.
I suddenly ran into something firm yet furry and I couldn't find the strength to pull away from its warmth.
"Uh, Kat?" I weakly looked up to see I had ran into Cloud. Awkward. She gently pushed me away but I couldn't find the strength in me to stand. I was a mess. I instead dropped limply to the ground, to tired to even react to the dull pain.
On the ground, I processed what a actually had done. I murdered, no, slaughtered her. The one person I used to trust with my life, gone. Faded out of my life, right under my claws, literally.
Three pairs of strong hands grabbed me and hoisted me to my feet.
"Kat? What's wrong?" Skittlez whispered with concern in her eyes as she, and everyone else surveyed me head-to-toe.
And that very second, I did something I promised myself I'd never do. I broke down and cried.
~~~~~
Twenty-five minutes later, I was forced to tell them what happened. Cloud gulped and slowly backed away from me. Skittlez's eyes were troubled and full of shock. And Midnight didn't make it any better by exclaiming, "you're a murderer!"
"You all aren't helping!" I snapped as I rubbed my temples stressfully. "Let me fight my own battles for a change. Now come on, we need to keep going."
Without another word, I whisked my tail at them to start walking. They obeyed, not once protesting or even making a sound.
The whole time we were walking I kept my head down, lost in my own thoughts.
"Kat, look out!" I heard Cloud yell, but I didn't pay her any attention. She was probably just messing with me to try to cheer me up. Yeah, I'm not the only one that's weird.
The feeling of nothing solid beneath my feet made me snap back into reality. I looked down and looked back up quickly, complete horror on my face. I walked right into a pot hole.
"Help!" I screamed as I tried unsuccessfully to grip the muddy walls as I fell.
"Kat!" I heard Cloud screech as I felt something tightly grab my wrist, saving me from the deadly drop to the bottom.
Dangling in the air, I looked up to see my saver; it was cloud. She gripped my wrist tightly, a grim look on her face. It was then that I noticed how dangerously close to the edge she was.
"I gotcha." She grunted as she hoisted me up, lifting me fairly easy I might add. "You're light as a feather." She joked as she set me down on solid ground.
"Haha, very funny." I rolled my eyes. "But I think you should move out of the way before you-"
To late. I realized with horror as I watched her lose her footing and slip into the darkness of the hole.
An image of Stephanie dying in front of me made me realize something. It was because of me that she died, and I couldn't save her. If cloud hit the bottom of that hole, it'd be my fault; but this time it was different. I can save her.
"Go save her." The voice, that I was slowly starting to tolerate, boomed in my ear.
Right. I smirked as I unfolded my useless wings and jumped down the hole after cloud.
I pushed my wings tightly against my back and I scrunched my legs together, making me go faster.
Because I have hypersensitive senses, all of this happened in a matter of seconds, so I quickly reached cloud who was desperately flailing her arms and letting out; get this, meows. I didn't know wether I should be amused or frightened.
"Kat, why did you come back down here you stupid!" Cloud gasped as I grabbed her, grunting from the effort of holding something heavier then me.
"If it's anyone dying here today it's me." I said wistfully as I threw her upwards, out of the hole. I couldn't just lift her up there now could I? Besides, she'll probably just have a couple scratches and bruises. Nothing compared to what's going to happen to me; death.
"ChirpyCat, flap your wings using the tips of them for balance, remember the Golden Eagle!" A voice yelled from the top of the hole, making my heart skip a beat. Only one person called me ChirpyCat, and only a few people knew I had Golden Eagle DNA.
Stephanie. But that can't be! I killed her, I watched her die with my own eyes! But as confused as I was, I couldn't just dwell on that. I had to get out of this hole, and quick to.
I flapped my wings experimentally, giving most attention to the tips of my wings to balance them evenly. I flew up a couple feet before I started to fall again. I flapped them some more and I went upward even more.
I'm doing this! I'm really doing it!
Suddenly feeling a gargantuan amount of excitement, I continued to flap my wings, paying close attention to balancing them out; and this time, I didn't stop.
In just a matter of seconds I had shot out of the hole and I flew up towards the clear blue sky. The wind in my hair felt so amazing, exhilarating, like I was made to do this. Oh wait, I was.
I turned my face downward to see the silhouettes of Midnight, Cloud, and Skittlez. They all grinned and waved at me cheerfully. And I waved back, a huge stupid grin plastered on my face. For once, all the hefty weight on my shoulders disappeared and I finally felt like a normal fourteen year old girl. (Well, minus the cat ears, tail, wings, and the fact that I'm flying, but you get it right?)
