The New Girl

By lunchtime, everyone was talking about her. And no one actually stopped to explain to me who she was.

"Apparently her dad is very rich," Brent told Janice.

So what? Mar'i's rich. She's a snob. All rich kids are.

"She's an albino, she's got the white hair and pale skin."

So do a hundred thousand other people in the world. Andre may not have white hair, but his pale skin was enough to give him the "creepy" look.

Yup. A new girl had moved into Murakami Secondary School district. I didn't think it was such a big deal, but people didn't normally move to Jump City, because of its dramatically increasing crime rates, so everyone apparently thought it was a big deal.

"Look Rachel! She's over there!" Katie grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the safety of our typical lunch table, practically dragging me towards a crowd of kids.

The girl's volleyball team, the cheerleading squad, and all sorts of groups and clubs were trying to get this "New girl" to join them. She really did have white hair. I made momentary eye contact with Mar'i and quickly looked away. Katie soon abandoned me and joined her friends from the art club, trying to see if the new girl had any creative talents.

I caught sight of Katie's brother, Jai, sitting by the New girl, trying to flirt with her. Gross. I also saw Ryan, Mar'i's brother, trying to interview her for the school paper. It's his dream to be a world-famous reporter someday, like Clark Kent (Who is secretly Superman, but you didn't hear that from me, got that?).

Ryan caught sight of me, then he looked at my twin kid brothers, who were standing behind him. He pointed at me and said something I couldn't hear over the rabble. Leo and Michael looked at me, then looked at the new girl. Then me, and back again. Leo pushed through the crowd and grabbed my hand, "You gotta see this!" He shouted in my ear, dragging me to the center of the crowd.

"Rachel, meet Rose. Rose, meet my sister, Rachel." Leo said.

"Hi," New girl said boredly, staring at her lunch tray. She had not so much as looked up from her food at her crowd of admirers. All I could see was her curtain of white hair draped down her back and over her shoulders.

"Um, hi," I said in return. Mom says I need to be more polite, so that was my very lame attempt at trying to do so.

The bell rang, and a few people left to head to their next class. I had civics, but something held me to the spot. Rose slowly got up and packed all her trash on her tray. She turned around to throw it away in the trash bin, and stopped.

I did too.

Rose's face was the same face I saw in the mirror every morning.

Mine.

Sorry it's not very long. It probably stinks, too.
