#2

The rain eventually softened, thinning into a quiet drizzle, but neither of them moved.

The city below continued its restless motion, unaware that something fragile and irreversible had just shifted above it.

Gemini was the first to pull his hand back.

Not because he wanted to, but because he was afraid of what would happen if he didn't.

"We should go inside,"
He said, his voice steadier than he felt.

"You'll catch a cold."

Fourth looked at him for a moment longer than necessary, as if committing the sight of him standing there, uncertain to memory.

"Yeah," he said at last.

"We should."

They walked back into the coffe side by side. Not close enough to brush shoulders, not far enough to feel like strangers. The warmth inside felt sudden, almost overwhelming, and Fourth realized how cold he had been outside, and perhaps long before that.

They sat across from each other at a small table by the window.

For a while, neither spoke.

Words, Fourth thought, were dangerous things. Once spoken, they could not be taken back. And yet, silence had already hurt them enough.

"Do you remember," Fourth began slowly,

"when we used to talk about leaving this city?"

Gemini looked up, surprised.

"After graduation," he replied.

"You said you wanted somewhere quieter."

"You said you'd follow me anywhere," Fourth said. His tone was light, but his eyes were not.

Gemini swallowed.
"I was younger," he said. "I thought saying it was enough."

"And now?" Fourth asked.

Gemini leaned back in his chair, his gaze drifting toward the rain-streaked window.

"Now I know that following someone means risking everything you've built," he said.

"And risking you."

Fourth's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
"You think I don't risk anything by staying?"

That made Gemini look at him again truly look.

"I never asked you to stay," Gemini said quietly.

"No," Fourth agreed.

"You didn't have to."

The words settled between them, heavy with all the things left unsaid over the years: postponed conversations, unfinished sentences, emotions carefully folded away and labeled later.

Fourth exhaled slowly.
"I got tired, Gemini."

"Tired of what?" Gemini asked, though he already sensed the answer.

"Tired of guessing," Fourth said. "Of wondering whether every moment mattered to you as much as it did to me. Of pretending I didn't want more just because you never asked for it."

Gemini felt something tighten in his chest.

"I didn't ask,"
"because I wasn't sure I had the right."

Fourth's voice softened.
"And I didn't speak... because I was afraid you'd tell me I was imagining things."

Their eyes met again, and this time, neither looked away.

Outside, the rain finally stopped.

Gemini leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on the table not reaching for Fourth, but no longer retreating either.

"If I say this now," he said, carefully, "it won't be perfect. I don't have a clear future mapped out. I don't know how to do this without messing up."

Fourth's lips curved into a faint, sad smile.
"I'm not asking for perfect."

Gemini nodded once, as if making a decision.

"But I do know this," he continued. "I don't want to keep standing at a distance, watching you decide whether to leave."

Fourth's breath caught.

"And if I stay?" he asked.

Gemini held his gaze.
"Then I'll stay too," he said. "Not halfway. Not in silence."

For a long moment, Fourth said nothing.

Then he reached across the table.

This time, Gemini didn't hesitate.

Their fingers intertwined no rush, no urgency just a quiet certainty settling in.

Outside, the city lights reflected clearly on the wet pavement, no longer blurred by rain.

And for the first time in a long while, the space between them was not filled with silence,
but with the promise of words yet to be spoken.
