1. Grow Up
"Seriously! Just grow up!"
Kim Taehyung frowned at how grumpy his best friend was as he bent down to pick up the VHS tapes that he had dropped all over the ground during his scare. Taehyung watched him as he blew the party horn in his mouth again, causing a funny noise to be produced from it. He pulled the party horn from his mouth as he narrowed his eyes at it. It had to be defective, especially since the chute pointed downwards each time he blew it. Taehyung stepped out of the closet of the video store, looking at Jimin's receding back as he walked back up front with his newly picked up stack.
"Since when don't you like surprises?" asked Taehyung as he followed after him.
"I don't like jump scares," said Jimin with a slightly short fuse as he put the VHS tapes down on the counter with more force than necessary. He turned to look at Taehyung who was approaching him; his blue vest buttoned crookedly with his name tag pinned on even worse.
"What did you do? Get dressed in the dark?"
Taehyung rose a brow in confusion before looking down to see what Jimin was more than likely talking about. He sighed as he put the party horn down on the counter, moving to fix his vest and name tag so that it was as straight as he was.
"Better?" He asked as he looked at Jimin who rolled his eyes and turned back to his haphazard stack of VHS tapes.
"Better," grumbled Jimin.
Taehyung knew that Jimin didn't necessarily like jump scares, but he hadn't meant for it to be that way. He was just trying to celebrate Jimin since he had the graveyard shift on his birthday. Something else had to be going on in his best friend's life that was making him extra grouchy though.
"Did something happen?" asked Taehyung as he followed after Jimin as he carried the stack of VHS tapes once more to shelve them.
"I'm assuming you mean besides you scaring the crap out of me just now?" asked Jimin as he stopped in the 'Newly Released' section, setting the stack in his arms onto the top of the shelving.
"Yes doofus besides that," said Taehyung.
"It's nothing," said Jimin as Taehyung scoffed, causing Jimin to turn and glare at him.
"Why are you scoffing?"
"'It's nothing'," mimicked Taehyung in a high-pitched voice. "You're such a horrible liar."
"Well teasing me is being a horrible friend," said Jimin as he sighed. "It's just Luna."
"Of course it's Luna," said Taehyung.
Ever since Jimin had met Luna three months ago, she was all he could talk about. Like her namesake, Jimin had made her his moon. His whole world revolved around Luna. It didn't help that he and Luna attended the same dance academy and were best friends, making Jimin fearful of crossing the line by asking her out.
"What about Luna?" asked Taehyung.
"I think she might have a crush on Jet."
"Who the frackaroni is Jet? And what kind of name is Jet? Can he fly or something?..."
"Oh can't you be serious for five seconds?!" asked Jimin with a sigh as he violently shoved a VHS back in its empty spot on the shelf.
"Sorry," said Taehyung as he focused back on Jimin. "Maybe you're wrong about her crush on this Jet though."
"I'm not wrong," said Jimin. "She couldn't stop gushing about 'Jet this' and 'Jet that' during our dance break today. We were supposed to go out to dinner tonight to celebrate my birthday but then she suddenly cancelled because she had plans with Jet and then my father asked me to cover this graveyard shift at the shop with you..."
'But I used to be your birthday buddy,' thought Taehyung with a pout, crossing his arms across his chest as he looked at Jimin.
"Why don't you just ask her out already? You are making things more complicated than they need to be."
"It's because she's the first person I've actually truly have feelings for and I don't want to screw it up."
"Well don't wait too long or you will lose your chance."
"Like I should take relationship advice from you and your twenty-five years of screwed up wisdom."
"Mean," said Taehyung with another pout to his lips that just had Jimin cracking a weak grin as he began to put the tapes back in their respective spots less violently.
Taehyung leaned forward to grab some of the tapes to help put them back. A ding sounded out over the door then, causing both of them to turn their heads at the same time to see the woman that entered, carrying a baby boy on her hips. Her frizzy hair seemed to be an indication that she hadn't gotten much rest; her two-year-old boy grasping it as if he found it fascinating. Taehyung moved to put the tape he currently had in his hands down, ducking down between the rows of shelving. Jimin saw Taehyung's childish move and knew exactly why he was hiding.
"Can I help you, Shora?" asked Jimin with a grin on his face.
"Don't play dumb Jimin. Where is Taehyung?"
"Not here..." hissed Taehyung in a whisper as he clutched the shelving in front of him to keep himself balanced in his crouch.
Shora sighed as she looked at the clock mounted on the wall behind the front desk since Jimin wasn't forthcoming with an answer. None of this was new to her.
"Well tell him it was supposed to be his night watching Madden."
Jimin could see Taehyung try to crouch down lower behind the shelving, leaving him to sigh. He knew that Shora and Taehyung had a complicated history, but he never understood why Taehyung hesitated in taking care of Madden. After all that was his son.
"I'll take him," said Jimin as he moved over to the door to take Madden out of Shora's arms.
"Thank you," said Shora with a relieved sigh. "Tell Taehyung he needs to have Madden back at my place by 8:30 tomorrow morning."
As Shora talked, Madden was grabbing the work vest that Jimin wore, twisting it around in his little fingers. Jimin smiled at the raven-haired boy in his arms, pressing a tiny kiss to his forehead.
"By the way, happy birthday Jimin," said Shora as she rushed towards the door, looking at her wristwatch as she cursed herself for being late before disappearing out into the night.
Jimin gently set Madden down on the maroon carpet after Shora left the store, squatting down to be at eye level with him.
"Go find daddy, Madden."
Madden looked at Jimin for a moment before walking off as he said to. His little almond shaped eyes scanned the first few aisles he walked by before his attention was caught by Taehyung crouched down in one of the aisles still.
"Daddy!" said Madden as he made his way into the aisle, throwing himself at Taehyung and causing an 'oof' to leave his mouth.
Taehyung smirked as he hugged Madden, reaching up a hand to ruffle his hair and make him giggle. Jimin came to stand at the end of the aisle where Taehyung was, crossing his arms across his chest.
"Sometimes I forget Madden is the child instead of you," said Jimin.
"Funny," said Taehyung as he moved to stand up, picking Madden up in his arms as Madden wrapped his arms about his neck.
"Madden, did you know it's Uncle Jiminie's birthday today?" asked Taehyung.
Madden nodded his head enthusiastically as he turned to look at Jimin.
"Happy!" said Madden, unable to say 'happy birthday' quite yet. Jimin appreciated the effort, smiling as he thanked Madden.
"Let me set you up with a video to watch while I finish up work, Madden, and then we can go celebrate Uncle Jiminie's birthday," said Taehyung as Madden smiled.
Taehyung carried Madden back to the children's section of the movie rental shop, placing Madden down once he was there so he could pick out a movie that he liked. Madden wandered around the children's area, looking at some movies along the back wall before pulling one free and walking back over to Taehyung with it. It was some sort of movie about a blue fuzzy monster who seemed to have a fascination with the color green. The kid movies they came up with nowadays didn't make any sort of sense to him.
Taehyung moved to pop the tape into one of the televisions in the kid's area as Madden threw himself into a nearby blue bean bag. Once the movie was playing, Taehyung kissed Madden on the top of the head and wandered back over to where Jimin was.
"You're leaving your child alone?" asked Jimin as he looked back at Madden, who was currently laying on his back on the bean bag and kicking his feet up in the air; more focused on that then the movie that had started to play.
"The store is small enough and we're not busy," said Taehyung.
"Do you care about Madden at all?" asked Jimin suddenly to Taehyung's surprise.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean every time Shora comes to give you time with Madden you always find ways to leave him off on his own."
"I'm working, Jimin."
"We're not busy, Taehyung," said Jimin, feeding Taehyung's own words back to him.
Taehyung sighed as he turned his head to look back at his son who was still pedal kicking his feet into the air. He supposed the real reason that he didn't spend time with his son was because he wasn't ready to be a father. He didn't know how to be a real father to his son, nor was he ready for the responsibility it entailed. He should have avoided such a compromising situation in the first place, but that was just one of his immature traits that he had yet to shake.
"Taehyung, you have a child now. It's time you stop acting like one," said Jimin as he moved to grab another stack of movies to put away.
Taehyung didn't say anything as he looked after Jimin, sighing as he moved to grab some movies to shelve too. He kept his eyes on Madden while he worked, coming back over to him once it was time to close up for the night and go celebrate Jimin's birthday. As Taehyung approached Madden, he could see that the credits were rolling on the movie and Madden was fast asleep on the bean bag. A soft smile spread over Taehyung's face as he shut off the movie before scooping his sleeping child up into his arms. Even though he wasn't ready to be a father, it didn't mean he didn't love his son.
