What type of graphics do you make and which is your favorite?
I prefer simpler graphics; I take "less is more" quite to heart. My favorite type of graphics would definitely be the ones that involve any sort of drawing or illustration, as I'm first and foremost an artist. Sometimes I illustrate covers entirely by hand just for the sake of doing so, including the text. Yes, yes, I know, I may have made life harder for myself than it ought to be; I will leave you to draw your own conclusions. (*cough* pun *cough*)
How long have you been designing graphics?
I haven't actually been designing for a long time. Last year I made some handmade book covers as a way to trick myself into practicing watercoloring (I hated watercolors back then). I also made some random book covers here and there for my books and my real-life friends - those were not bad, I guess, but were horribly guilty of the disease, "slap some text onto a random photograph, y'all!" (Although to be fair I still used most of my own photographs/drawings/photographs snapped by my friends even for those covers). I only started seriously getting into graphic design a few months ago (two, nearly three).
How did you start?
I started legit designing after seeing all the amazing book covers on Wattpad. I talked to some of the designers on the design community, and they were all very helpful and really inspired me to try it out for myself.
What is your favorite part about graphic design?
I'd say my favorite part is to try and visualize how to make a cover that will best represent the story. Sometimes it comes easily, other times not so, but it is regardless a highly rewarding process.
Where do you get your inspiration?
The design community on Wattpad, as I mentioned, is a huge part of my inspiration. I also love looking at book covers on Pinterest, from both published books as well as fan covers/remake covers of famous books.
How long do graphics typically take you?
That depends. Since I'm into the simplistic style, a cover that involves a photograph doesn't take too long - it can range from half an hour to one and a half, depending on how long I take to actually figure out what works best in the cover. My illustrated covers take a lot longer though, obviously; the cover for my current novel took several weeks purely because of the drawing, though the design aspect only took about an hour or two.
What advice would you give aspiring designers?
1. Be patient, and don't be too hard on yourself!
2. Don't wait for inspiration; go out there and grab it by the neck or you'll end up waiting forever for an epiphany that may never come.
3. Ask for help if you ever need it. Most people are willing to give pointers on their work process, and it'll really help you to improve your skill. You don't necessarily have to figure out everything on your own!
A fun fact about yourself:
...I'm finding this to be the hardest question of the lot, actually. XD Um. I haven't really told this to a lot of people, but I'm currently working on a graphic novel with another writer that I'm hoping to see published eventually.
