Chapter 15 - Power Outage
After they came back from eating hot dogs, Yibo, Zhan, Youn and Cheng went to the community center where Wooseok was already waiting for Youn and Emily arrived there shortly after them. They played pool together and formed pairs of teams. Zhan insisted on being on a team with Yibo and the two had been practically unbeatable, winning 3 games in a row.
They were having fun, laughing and getting ready for another round of pool when Alessia appeared in the community room. She walked right up to Zhan and asked, "What are you doing here with them? I've been looking for you all this time and then I find you here?"
"Why wouldn't I be here? Cheng is my brother and I'm just making friends with the others. Why were you looking for me?" Replied Zhan. Yibo believed from looking at him that he was annoyed.
"Can we talk in private please?"
"Yeah okay." Said Zhan and then turned to Yibo and the others. "I'll be right back, then we can continue playing." But no one really believed that. And the way Alessia looked, it had been even less believable. Because she made it clear just by her look that she wasn't going to let Zhan spend any more time with them that night.
Then, after almost an hour had passed in which Zhan had not returned, Yibo and the others saw themselves confirmed in their assumption that Alessia would not let him join them again. They played table tennis while they waited. But after Zhan had not returned after an hour, they went to the large community room to join the other students.
In the large community room, there was just another battle going on. Two small groups were competing against each other. They were dancing and rapping. But Yibo's eyes were not on the battle, but on the big white sofa under the panorama window. For there Zhan and Alessia were sitting and talking. Zhan even laughed and Yibo felt a twinge in his heart.
Youn put his arm around Yibo's shoulder and smiled encouragingly at him. "Don't be sad okay? I think Zhan showed today that he cares about you. So don't worry about it. Maybe those two are just friends."
"Mn. I'm not sad. I just don't feel comfortable seeing the two of them together. And without wanting to, I always have to wonder what they're laughing about." Replied Yibo.
When Zhan's gaze suddenly locked on Yibo and their eyes met, Yibo felt his cheeks flush. Hastily, he turned his head to the side and pretended to be interested in the battle of the older students. But only a few seconds later, Yibo just had to look in Zhan's direction again. This time, however, he made sure it wasn't too conspicuous.
Wooseok, who was standing next to Youn, said, "I think she will have told him that she discovered this morning that many of the lockers had been broken into. Her cell phone was also reportedly stolen."
"Huh? How do you know that? You weren't even there." Asked Cheng, who was now also back with them after going to the bathroom.
"That's what the supervisors told earlier when I went to get my pain pill and a cooling pad for my cheek. Supposedly, Alessia was at the training center again last night and wanted to work out by herself for an hour. She had left her cell phone in her locker so as not to be distracted. Then when she went to the dorm, she forgot it in the locker. And this morning, before breakfast, when she went to get it, it was gone. She told a supervisor and he then called the police. And after she made her statement and filed a report, she took the day off so she could drive into the city and buy a new phone." Explained Wooseok.
"Oh man. And in the end, Alessia might have broken open all the other lockers to check if her cell phone is hidden somewhere there." Said Cheng shaking his head.
"Mhhh, no. Shortly after you guys were allowed to leave earlier, the questioning continued in the auditorium. And then the director came out again and sent us all away. He said the culprit had turned himself in." Explained Emily.
"And who was it?" Yibo asked curiously.
"I don't know. None of the ones who were still at the auditorium. That much is clear." Replied Emily.
Yibo wondered about this, since it was said that only someone from their year could have done this. And now someone else was supposed to have done it? "Did they find the stolen things on the person? Do you know?" He asked.
"Mhhh, nobody said anything about that. Maybe we'll find out tomorrow." Said Emily, suddenly falling into Yibo's arms after being accidentally pushed by someone.
Arm in arm by this accident, Yibo and Emily stood in the middle of the room. Out of the corner of his eye, Yibo could see Zhan suddenly get up from the sofa and look in their direction with a fixed fearful gaze. But instead of letting go of Emily, Yibo wrapped his arms even more fully around Emily and asked her with a smile, "Is everything all right?"
Emily nodded. "Thank you. If it wasn't for you, I would have fallen for sure now."
"Mn. No problem."
"Is Zhan still looking at us?"
"What?"
"Well, it's because of him that you're hugging me, isn't it?"
"How come..."
"I have eyes in my head Yibo. I know you have a crush on him."
"I'm sorry."
"Why?"
"Well..."
"Yibo, it's okay. I don't have a crush on you. I like you, but only as a friend. Mhhh, what do you say I help you out a little?"
"How?"
"Just let me do it. You just have to play along."
"Okay." Said Yibo. He wasn't sure if that was a good idea, but it was worth a try. And besides, he was out of ideas on how to distract Zhan from Alessia anyway, so he would focus on him and not her.
"Just play along now. Let's see what Zhan does." Said Emily. She kissed Yibo on the cheek, released the hug and took his hand. She walked with Yibo to the door and before they even opened it, Zhan was suddenly standing next to them, stopping them from going out the door.
"Where are you going?" Zhan asked, almost staring the two down.
"We want to go for a walk outside. Do you mind?" Emily asked, pushing past Zhan and Yibo behind her. "You go back to Alessia. She'll otherwise just get mad again and take it out on Yibo." She added as the two stepped into the hallway. But Zhan didn't go back to Alessia, instead stepping out into the hallway with them.
Youn, Wooseok and Cheng also arrived now and wanted to know what was going on. Because they saw Zhan grab Yibo's arm to hold him down. Cheng smirked when he heard his brother say to Emily, "You're not leaving with Yibo now. He's staying here!"
"Why should he? You didn't come back earlier even though you said you would. You were happily chatting with Alessia on the sofa until just now and didn't pay any attention to Yibo. Why should he stay here? So he can watch you and Alessia talking?" Emily asked in a challenging manner.
Zhan ignored Emily and asked Yibo, "Do you really want to go for a walk with Emily?"
Yibo swallowed hard. He wondered what just happened and nodded. "Yes, I do." He said hesitantly.
At that, Zhan let go of Yibo's arm with a disappointed look. Now that the others were also standing in the hallway and in front of the door, Zhan couldn't go back. Cheng even stood provocatively in front of him and asked, "Why is it so important to you that Yibo stay here?"
"Because I still wanted to talk to him about something. Unfortunately, the conversation with Alessia took longer and I admit I lost track of time. Still, I'd like to want to talk to Yibo about something. Alone!" Replied Zhan.
"Then that must be..." Began Youn, stopping mid-sentence as darkness suddenly fell around them. In the hallway and seemingly the entire building and grounds, the power had suddenly gone out and everything around them had gone dark.
They all pressed themselves against the walls and tried to grope their way to the exit. Yibo, who had never liked the dark, was shaking slightly and his heart was beating almost to his throat. And then it almost stopped when suddenly someone grabbed him by the cheeks and that person kissed him! His first kiss ever! But who was the person?
Yibo knew immediately that the person was not a woman, because the person was about as tall as he was. So much taller than Emily. But he also didn't believe that it was Cheng, after all he is in love with Yibo's big brother and wouldn't kiss just anyone else. And neither did he believe it was Youn or Wooseok. They weren't standing next to him right now, and they're in love with each other. So why would either of them kiss him?
That left only Zhan! But had it really been Zhan? Yibo's heart and mind said yes. But he had not been sure either. However, it had also been the case that no one else came into question. Had the idea of Zhan kissing him, of all people, perhaps been so beautiful that he ruled out everything else? After all, there was the possibility of someone else joining them in the hallway. Even if Yibo didn't believe that.
The idea that it was Zhan who kissed him was quite enough for him to return the kiss after only two seconds. Whereupon the person pinned Yibo to the wall and kissed even more passionately than he already did. The person put both arms around Yibo's body, pulling him tightly against him, and Yibo suddenly had trouble keeping himself on his feet because his knees went all soft.
When someone in the hallway coughed, the person finally backed away from Yibo and just a few seconds later, the lights in the hallway came back on. Yibo seemed quite out of breath and his cheeks were bright red. He immediately looked at Zhan, who was standing across from him and seemed to be looking right into his soul with his gaze.
Much to Yibo's chagrin, Alessia was suddenly in the hallway as well, standing right next to Zhan. Her cheeks were also flushed and she was holding Zhan's hand. Was it perhaps not Zhan who had kissed him after all? Did Zhan and Alessia kiss and did she have red cheeks because of that? If so, then who had kissed Yibo?
Cautiously, Yibo looked around the hallway and immediately saw several students who had come into the hallway during the blackout without him noticing. Next to him was He Peng from the second year. The latter smiled at Yibo, and Yibo hoped that it was not he who had kissed him. That would have just made him uncomfortable and embarrassed. Besides, Yibo knows that He Peng is totally into Alessia. And He Peng wouldn't make such a mistake and kiss him instead of Alessia, would he?
When Yibo looked at Zhan again, he noticed Zhan's red cheeks. Moreover, Zhan was no longer holding Alessia's hand and he was still looking at Yibo with a look that Yibo couldn't interpret. And when Zhan winked at him, he was absolutely sure that Zhan had kissed him. Relieved that Zhan seems to have stolen his first kiss, he still didn't know what to do with it now.
For as far as Yibo knew, Zhan and Alessia were a couple. And until just now, the two were holding hands. Now completely confused, Yibo didn't know what to think. It had all been too confusing for him. If Zhan kissed him, it meant Zhan likes him, didn't it? And if that's the case, why doesn't he tell Yibo? And then why is he with Alessia?
Emily snapped Yibo out of his thoughts by taking his hand again and asking him if they wanted to go outside now. Yibo nodded. Not because he wanted to try again to provoke a reaction from Zhan, but because he needed fresh air. And again Zhan followed them.
Zhan held Yibo's arm again and whispered in his ear, "Have you forgotten what I told you when I was with you in the infirmary? Remember what I told you!" Then Zhan let go of his arm and walked back into the community center. Yibo looked after him, confused and speechless. "I'm going to go to my room now. I'll see you tomorrow." Said Zhan to Alessia and the others and kept walking.
"Damn! What had he said?" Yibo asked himself. He remembered the dream again and that Zhan had whispered something in his ear that he couldn't understand. So had that not been a dream either? Had that really happened? If so, how was he now supposed to find out what Zhan had whispered in his ear? And had Zhan wanted to talk to him about it? Was it actually that Zhan had wanted to talk to him about in private?
