Chapter 36 - Uncle Wang

When Zhan arrived at the concert hall, he went to the ticket counter, opened an email from the anonymous user and searched for the QR code, and then showed the phone to the saleswoman at the counter. She scanned the QR code on his phone and Zhan was then given a VIP concert ticket for Yibo's concert and a VIP backstage pass that would allow him to see Yibo after the concert.

With the ticket and the backstage pass, he went back to the parking lot and looked out for a 15-year-old girl who had a book with a red cover. Finding this girl among the many other girls had not been easy even for Zhan. For there were hundreds of excited girls in the parking lot waiting to finally be admitted to the concert hall.

After a few minutes, however, Zhan finally found the girl. She was standing next to the entrance, waving her book to attract attention. Zhan walked up to her and introduced himself. "Hi I'm Daytoy. You and I have been texting. It's about the ticket exchange." He said.

"Ah, this is really you?" She asked doubtfully. It was probably because of Zhan's clothes, or rather, his cover-up. His face was barely visible under his baseball cap and he wore only black clothes and a long coat. He might as well have been a creepy criminal.

To prove to her that it was really him she was writing with, he showed her the concert ticket and the backstage pass. "I know I look scary in this getup. But I'm afraid that friends or colleagues can recognize me here. I'd be really embarrassed if they knew I was into Wang Yibo's music." Lied Zhan.

"Oh, now I understand. I was wondering."

"Yeah, sorry if I scared you. So, are we sticking to what we agreed? I give you my VIP ticket and backstage pass and you give me your concert ticket?"

"Mn. It stays the same. But can I ask why you want to switch? I mean, my seat is in the back row and you probably won't be able to see much from there. I'm wondering why anyone would want to trade a VIP ticket and a backstage pass for such a bad seat."

"Simple. I don't have to worry about appearing in a video or picture somewhere in the back row. I'm just there for the music anyway. Besides, someone gifted me the ticket and the pass. So I'm not losing anything in the process."

"Okay good, I understand that. And I'm happy to be honest. Because then I can see Wang Yibo up close and personal."

"You're a big fan of him, aren't you?"

"Mn, totally. I love him."

"Well, he's a handsome idol too."

"Oh yeah. My friends and I collect everything we can find of him. I've probably collected close to 200 pictures of him. And in every picture he looks super great."

"I believe you."

"I'm already super excited. My friends are going to be green with envy tomorrow when I show them the pictures and videos I'll be taking later."

"Then I suggest we swap now. And after the swap, you should go straight to the entrance. Not that someone will see what kind of ticket you have and steal it from you yet."

"Right. It would be better if no one sees it." She said. She beamed with joy as Zhan handed her the concert ticket and his backstage pass. She gratefully handed her single ticket to Zhan and then hurried to the entrance where she had been allowed in immediately because of the VIP ticket.

When the official admission began, Zhan waited until almost the end before he also went into the concert hall and took his place in the last row. Even then, before the concert even started, Zhan understood what the girl meant when she said that this was actually a bad seat. Because it was hard for him to see anything from the stage. He now also understood why there were these huge screens that showed live what was happening on stage.

There were still about 15 minutes left until the start of the concert. Enough time even for the last fans to make it to the hall and to their seats in time before the concert started. But already now everything looked like one big chaos. Because Yibo's fans couldn't stay on their seats. They moved as far as they could to the stage and stood there singing, screaming and some crying with joy.

Zhan stayed in his seat, but wasn't sure if it was a good idea. As a special agent, he knows it's better not to stand out and get lost in the crowd. So if he remained seated as one of a few, he would probably stand out. On the other hand, maybe it didn't matter if he sat or stood. Because he was taller than Yibo's fans and would stand out among them, because of his height.

"Sitting or standing? Not an easy decision is it?" Someone asked him from the side. Only now had Zhan noticed that the seat next to him was no longer free. In his mind, he cursed his inattention.

"Agent Wang. Are you here to see your nephew live on stage?" Zhan asked Yibo's uncle.

"Yes and no. I wanted to see if you would accept the invitation to my nephew's concert at least this time."

"So you're the Anonymous user?"

"Yes. And it took me a lot of money and persuasion to get your email address."

"Mhhh, figured it was you."

"And?"

"And what?"

"Why did you switch VIP seats? Aren't you here for Yibo?"

"I'm here because I'm finally on vacation after 5 years and I'd rather go here than work."

"Work when you're on vacation?"

"Well, the bad guys don't ask if I'm in the mood for a new mission right now."

"How are you Zhan?"

"Excellent."

"Where have you been for the past few years?"

"Out of the country."

"I know that. But where have you been?"

"Europe and Eastern Europe."

"Ah, I heard that a young agent was able to convict several high-level targets of their crimes and arrest them. So that was you."

"Maybe so. I'm not allowed to talk about it."

"I know."

"Good."

"Hey Zhan?"

"Mn?"

"Are you going to talk to Yibo?"

"I don't know what about."

"Oh no? I thought I was always clear and concise in my emails. Listen, Yibo is really sorry and he wants to talk to you and explain."

"Explain what? That instead of talking to me, he just took off in the middle of the night because he suddenly panicked about not being able to fulfill his wishes and dreams? I already know that. So what else is there to explain?"

"But you should know that he didn't leave because he didn't love you. He was still young and immature. Yet he loved you very much and still does. He just wants a chance to explain himself to you."

"What does it matter anymore? It's been five years. That's a very long time. And honestly, I don't feel like talking about Yibo either. I'm really only here at the concert to avoid work and to avoid my partner. I think she is a bit crazy. I get goose bumps every time I see her. And she talks so aggressively."

"Haha, people like that can be really scary."

"Oh yeah absolutely."

"Hey Zhan, I can't and won't tell you what to do. But I can at least ask you to think about giving Yibo a chance to apologize to you personally for just running away that time. He's really sorry. He has regretted running away almost every day for the past 5 years. He probably didn't realize what he had done until we arrived in Seoul."

"It may well be that he regretted it. And it may also be that he was too young at the time and acted impulsively. Yes, he was immature. I readily admit that. But it didn't hurt any less when I found out that he just ran away and left me at his parents' house. I'm sorry, but I think I'm entitled to my heartache that Yibo caused me. Even after these 5 years, I have not forgiven Yibo. Not because I don't understand why he did it and what was going on inside him. But because he ruthlessly broke my heart. And now I'm sorry, but I've lost my desire for this concert."

"Zhan please wait. I didn't mean to upset you."

"I know. But every time I think about that morning 5 years ago and how Yibo had just left, I get angry again. And now I'm leaving. Have fun." Said Zhan and got up from his seat. At the same moment, Yibo appeared on the stage and his gaze went in Zhan's direction. But could Yibo even see Zhan from the stage if Zhan couldn't even manage to see everything on the stage from his seat?

The question of whether Yibo could see and recognize him was answered the moment Yibo's voice sounded over the speakers. "ZhanZhan?" Zhan literally winced and his heart seemed to have stopped for a brief moment. "ZhanZhan? Is that really you?" Yibo asked again.

Yibo's fans all turned in Zhan's direction. Zhan pulled his baseball cap deeper into his face, turned around, and hurried toward the exit. He wasn't ready for this. And certainly not in front of Yibo's fans. A security company man standing at the exit blocked Zhan's way, thinking Zhan was suspicious. "Get out of the way!" Zhan growled at him.

"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to stay." Replied the security guard.

"It's okay, let him go. I know him." Said Uncle Wang, who had hurried behind Zhan.

The security guard opened the door and Zhan went outside to the parking lot. He walked toward his car and was already at the driver's door when he suddenly heard Yibo's voice. "ZhanZhan wait!" Yibo called out to him and ran towards him.

Zhan raised his arm and straightened his hand. "Stop! Stay where you are and go back!" Replied Zhan to him.

"Please, I want to talk to you."

"There's nothing to talk about. Now go back inside and make your fans happy. They paid a lot of money for this concert. So don't disappoint them."

"Please ZhanZhan."

"No!" Said Zhan, opened the driver's door of his car and got in. He started the engine, buckled his seatbelt and almost sped away. In the rearview mirror, he saw Yibo still standing in the parking lot.

When Zhan arrived at his new apartment, his heart was still racing. It was completely out of control. Even more so than when he is on a mission and just meets the end enemy, the target, and it comes to the final showdown before he arrests his target.

For minutes, Zhan sat in his chair, concentrating on regaining his composure. Only then did he get back up, take off his coat and shoes, and look around at the mess of moving boxes and jumbled furniture. "What the hell? When did this stuff get here?" He asked himself. Because when he made his way to the concert, the things hadn't been there yet.

"Where would it have come from already my son? We brought it here." Said his dad, coming out of Zhan's bedroom holding an empty moving box. "We were hoping to finish by the time you got back. But you beat us to it."

"Hi Dad. I was beginning to think I was hallucinating. I think this could have waited until tomorrow. It's getting late."

"You know your dad. He always wants everything done right away." Said Zhan's mom, coming out of Zhan's bathroom. She kissed Zhan on the cheek and gently stroked his arm. "Where have you been?" She wanted to know.

"Wait a minute. If you're here, why didn't you turn on a light in the living room?"

"What for? It's not like we were in the living room. And your mom asked you something." Said Zhan's dad.

"Mhhh, I wanted to go to a concert. But I changed my mind."

"What was the concert?" His mom wanted to know.

"Oh by an artist you don't know. But enough of that, let's keep unpacking okay?" Asked Zhan. His parents, experienced agents who immediately understood that Zhan didn't want to talk about it, nodded and then helped Zhan unpack his moving boxes and arrange the furniture. Zhan was glad and grateful that they did not press him further to tell them more.

It took them until well into the night before everything was ready. And because it was the middle of the night, Zhan's parents slept at his apartment. His dad in the living room on the comfy sofa and his mom laid down in bed next to Zhan. She stroked his forehead and cheek as they both lay side by side. "You are still suffering aren't you son?" She asked softly.

"What do you mean mom?"

"ZhanZhan, you know exactly what I mean. I know there was only one concert that evening. And that was Wang Yibo's."

"Mn. I was there."

"But?"

"But I left before the concert started."

"Is it that hard for you to see him?"

"Not necessarily seeing him. Rather, talking to him. Because if I can be honest. I'm still so mad at him, I'd probably punch him in the face."

"You would never do that, I know you son. And because I know you, I know that you're more afraid that you might forgive him and he might break your heart again."

"Oh wow, I hadn't even thought that far Mom."

"Oh no? I think you did. But enough of that. I know you don't want to talk about it and we are very tired too."

"Mn. I just want to get some sleep. Besides, I have to go to the base later. I have a new mission."

"Already?"

"Mn. But I can't tell you anything about it."

"That's okay. Good night my son. I love you."

"Night mom, I love you too." Said Zhan and fell asleep.
