【SEASON 6 EPISODE 14: PART THREE】
After Jules won her fight against Zara—which she was still on a high about—Gunther gave Miguel and Axel fifteen minutes to prepare for their fight before they would have to compete.
During those fifteen minutes, Julianna sat in the front row where Eli, Lexi, and Demetri still all sat. Jules was squished into the small space between Eli and Demetri. Before she sat down, she carefully took Laura out of Lexi's hands and cradled the girl in her arms, bouncing her just a little to hopefully loll her into sleep.
Eli wrapped his arms around Jules, careful not to hit or be too aggressive since Julianna was holding the baby, and obnoxiously kissed his girlfriend's temple. When he pulled his lips away from Jules, he pulled her closer into his chest. "My girlfriend is a world champion!" He cheered in a whispered, playful cheer.
Julianna blushed at his words, leaning into Eli's touch. Still bouncing her baby sister in her arms, Jules rested her head in the crook of Eli's neck.
The couple just stayed like that for a while. Jules was tired from her fight and just wanted to relax and Eli knew that without her even having to speak it out. He rubbed his hand up and down her back to ease her muscles and tension in her body and Jules actually started to feel her eyes drift closed.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please return to your seats." Gunther's voice echoed over the loudspeakers.
Jules groaned, forcing her eyes open and then forcing herself out of her spot on the bleachers. "I've gotta go." She muttered, her voice low and tired as Lexi only perked up from the other side of Demetri, her hands outstretched to take Laura back.
The brunette giggled as Julianna handed her the baby and Eli just stared at his girlfriend with a deflated look and a small frown. "What? But you're done fighting." He complained, making Jules turn back to him.
Without a second thought, Eli reached out for the girl, his hands instantly finding her waist and he tugged. As Jules stumbled toward him, Eli spun the girl around until her back was to him and then pulled her again until she was back in her seat between him and Demetri. "This could be your seat." Eli hummed, his hands staying on Julianna's hips and running gentle circles along her side.
Jules smiled at the idea. As nice as that sounded, she wanted to be there for Miguel.
With a defeated sigh, Julianna peeled herself out of her boyfriend's grasp and stood back up. Eli's hands suddenly found hers again, holding her in place in front of him so she wouldn't leave right away. He looked up at her with big, puppy dog-like eyes that made Julianna smile.
"I've gotta be there for Miguel. He stood on the sidelines for my fight." Jules explained softly, her thumbs making circles across Eli's hands.
Eli sighed, his shoulders slumping as he rubbed Julianna's hands back. "Fine." He grumbled, but Jules knew he wasn't actually mad. Especially when he looked up into her eyes and smiled on instinct, his cheeks reddening. "I love you." He hummed, tugging Julianna toward him one more time.
Jules muttered a small, "I love you too" back just before their lips met and as they started to pull away, Eli let go of her hands so she could walk toward the mat.
"And now... our final match of this year's Sekai Taikai!" Gunther announced as Jules moved to stand in between Johnny and Robby, all three of them standing directly in front of Miguel.
"Representing the Iron Dragons, Axel Kovačević! And representing Cobra Kai, Miguel Diaz!" Gunther cheered from the center of the stage, the audience roaring in applause everytime he raised a hand to gesture to one of the fighters.
Miguel looked to his sensei and teammates. He would've smiled at them, but he was too in his head, too in the moment to tell his brain to. Miguel watched as Johnny nodded his head in encouragement, his eyes moving to the Iron Dragons for a split second before he turned back to Miguel.
"This is what it's all about. Savor the moment." Johnny said and Miguel nodded, shaking his hands by his side and bouncing on his toes as his nerves coursed through him.
Julianna giggled, calming Miguel down just a tad. She leaned forward and slugged his arm gently. "And knock his block off." She said through her laughter, a smirk making its way onto her lips. Miguel let out a breath, a laugh he didn't even know was building up, slipped through and the tightness in his chest eased. He nodded to the blonde, making her hold her head higher in pride.
"Would the fighters please come to the mat." Gunther's voice rang one last time before he handed the microphone off to Daryll to take over reffing.
Johnny, Jules, and Robby's last words of encouragement jumbled over each other as Miguel stepped onto the mat and met Daryll and Axel in the middle. They bowed to each the referee, then each other before getting into their fighting stances.
As soon as the referee called, "Fight!", Miguel moved. He spun, going for a kick near Axel's head, but it was a trick and while Axel kept his guard up high, Miguel dropped and threw a punch straight into his stomach.
"Point!"
"Nice, Diaz!" Johnny screamed from beside Jules. The man sighed, wrapping a heavy arm around his daughters shoulders and pulling her into his chest. Jules let out a small noise of surprise when her shoulder crashed into her dads chest, but Johnny ignored it, smiling at Miguel on the mat. "Look at him go."
Miguel barely wasted a second and ran at Axel to send a sharp kick toward his face, but Axel leaned back just in time, Miguel's foot missing by inches.
Miguel dropped to the floor, going to sweep Axel's feet from under him, but Axel jumped right over it. As soon as Miguel pushed himself back up, Axel was already there, fists raised, ready to strike.
But Miguel spun out of the way, moving past Axel's side and driving his elbow hard into his ribs.
"Point!"
"Oh my God!" Jules cheered, shaking in her dads arms as he laughed with her.
The back-and-forth continued. Every strike Axel threw, Miguel blocked and countered. But then Axel's hands suddenly shot out, grabbing hold of Miguel's arms and yanking him forward, forcing him into his chest.
Jules winced, her eyes squinting in nervousness as she waited for whatever punch Axel would throw Miguel's way, but Miguel twisted free from Axel's grasp, punching him square in the jaw and then kicking him in the stomach seconds later.
"Two points! Diaz!"
Axel retaliated fast, swinging a high kick toward Miguel's head. Miguel ducked beneath it, but that barely stopped Axel. He threw a flurry of punches back and forth, left and right at Miguel, hoping to get at least one fist to land on the boy's face, but Miguel blocked every single one and on Axel's last punch.
He pushed Axel's fist away, giving him the perfect opening and so he stepped back and threw his leg out and kicked Axel right in the face.
"Point!" The referee, Daryll, screamed just as the buzzer rang throughout the arena.
Both boys relaxed, their arms dropping and their chest rising and falling at a faster pace to catch their breaths. As Miguel started to walk back toward Johnny, Jules, and Robby, Jules immediately started clapping, smiling at the tired one on Miguel's face.
"Hell yeah, Miguel!" Jules cheered, clapping her hand onto Miguel's back as he hopped off the mat.
He looked up at the scoreboard as Robby gave him a towel to wipe away some sweat. The 5-0 made his smile grow, a breathy laugh coming out with it.
"Diaz, you're on fire!" Johnny gushed, shaking the boys shoulder encouragingly.
Miguel blushed at the compliments coming from the Lawrence's. His head dipped as he nodded. "Thanks." He muttered, finally starting to catch his breath.
The horn to call the fighters back onto the mat blared around the room and for a second, Jules winced at the loud noise before she pushed the faintest ringing in her ears to hype up Miguel.
"You've got this." Jules said with a smile that spread across her entire face. Miguel smiled at her excitement and nodded. As he turned back to the mat, the three Lawrence's all immediately started to cheer for Miguel
"Go Miguel!"
"Come on, Miguel!"
"Let's go, Diaz!"
As soon as the fighter started, Miguel ran forward and lifted his leg, aiming to kick Axel's side, but Axel blocked it. Before Miguel could bring his leg down, Axel's knee shot up, went straight into Miguel's chest.
"Point!"
Johnny groaned, his arm dropping from Julianna's shoulders. She turned to face her dad, whose head was thrown back in annoyance and gently patted his back, her head shaking as she stared back at the fight. "It's okay... Miguel's still ahead." Julianna tried to reason, her patting moving to rubbing.
Axel suddenly caught Miguel's arm mid-punch. He yanked him close and slammed his fist into Miguel's ribs. Miguel barely had time to wince before Axel's knee came up and rammed into his stomach, knocking the air from his lungs.
"Two points!" The referee screamed as Miguel doubled over in pain, curling in on himself and not seeing Axel spin into a kick until his foot connected with Miguel's face, snapping his head to the side.
"Point!"
Jules cringed, trying her hardest to not look up at Johnny glaring down at her. "Oh... I jinxed it..." She muttered, earning a small huff in annoyance from Johnny and a grumbled, "yeah, you did."
Miguel staggered from the hit, but this time, when Axel's fist came flying, Miguel's hand shot up and he caught it. Their arms locked, fists pressed tight together. For a second, it looked like Miguel had gained the upper hand, but with their hands pinned up high, Axel swung his leg up in a sharp kick, slamming into Miguel's chest again.
"That's another point!"
Miguel stumbled back, and Jules gulped at the way his breath was visibly ragged. Axel took this moment and didn't hesitate to back up and give himself space before he charged toward him at full speed. Axel's foot left the mat, his body twisting into a spin kick and the heel of his foot striking Miguel across the face, knocking Miguel to the ground.
"Knockdown! Ten points!"
As soon as the buzzer rang, Johnny tried to step onto the mat, but before he could rush in, two hands shot out to grab and stop him. Jules on his left and Robby on his right, both of them holding him back and pulling him away from the edge of the mat.
Johnny thrashed in his kids arms slightly, especially when Miguel came walking to the edge of the mat.
Jules let go of her dad and walked to meet Miguel in the middle. "Hey, it's okay." She breathed out as Miguel jumped off the mat. Julianna patted his back as Miguel just made a beeline past Jules and toward her dad.
As Miguel spoke to Johnny, Robby moved over to stand with Jules. His shoulder accidentally bumped into Julianna's because of his crutches, but it made her look to him so Robby didn't mind much.
"You okay?" He asked, watching the way Julianna picked away at her nail polish nervously. Robby would've swatted her hands away from each other to try and stop her from picking, but he had to hold himself up with his crutches.
Jules sighed, her hands dropping and then raising again to run a hand through her hair. "Yeah, I just... I don't trust Silver." She breathed out, crossing her arms over her chest to stop herself from picking at her nails.
Julianna looked back at Silver just as Robby scoffed out a laugh. "Yeah, when has anyone ever?" He grumbled sarcastically.
Jules looked back ahead and her eyes widened when she saw Miguel walking toward her and the mat. She was quick to step in front of him, blocking Miguel from walking any further.
"Hey." Jules quickly said and Miguel sighed, not because he was annoyed with Jules for stopping him, but because he was tired and out of breath from the fight.
"There's no one I see winning this thing that isn't you." Jules told the boy, her voice soft and steady as she reached behind her head to untie her dad's headband he had put on her during her fight.
Miguel's eyebrows furrowed at the gesture, but when Julianna grabbed his headband and ripped it off his head, he finally realized what Jules was doing.
"You can do this." Jules whispered to Miguel and he cringed when the headband touched his forehead.
His eyebrows furrowed, his nose crinkled, but a small smile grew on his face at the same time. "Seriously? I get the hand me down headband?" He asked in a fake annoyance.
As her hands dropped from around his head, Jules lightly slapped his cheek and Miguel dramatically whipped his head to the side as if Jules had actually smacked him. "Hey! That hand me down headband got me the win. So... shut up and win this thing." Jules said, forcing herself not to smile or giggle at Miguel's antics.
Her hands fell, one of them moving into a fist in between her and Miguel. "Cobra Kai style." Julianna hummed, smiling up at Miguel as she waited for him to fist bump her back.
Miguel looked down at Julianna's fist, then up to her eyes, then back down to her fist. He snickered, fist bumping her back.
"Cobra Kai style." He whispered as the horn blared, calling him and Axel back onto the mat. Julianna smiled, dropping her hand as Miguel stepped onto the mat and came face to face with Axel.
The second the fight started, Axel charged at Miguel, jumping into a high kick. Miguel braced himself, dodging the kick and before Axel could even fix his footing from his kick, he was sending another one toward Miguel's side.
Miguel blocked again and as Axel put his foot back down, Miguel ran at him, throwing punches back and forth. He almost landed a punch to Axel's face, but Axel shot up just in time, blocking all of Miguel's punches by either pushing his fists away or holding his ground with his forearms.
Miguel had been throwing so many punches toward Axel's face, the taller boy hardly kept any guard on his stomach. So after three more fast punches aimed at his face, Miguel suddenly changed his direction and threw a punch at Axel's gut.
"Point!"
Axel froze, completely stunned by the change in attack. He curled into himself slightly, too frazzled to notice Miguel throwing a kick toward him until his foot landed right in the center of Axel's chest.
"Point!" Daryll yelled and Robby screamed, looking to Jules beside him with wide eyes and a big smile. "That's it, Miguel." Jules cheered, jumping just once out of excitement and clapping her hands crazily.
Axel's face reddened in anger and his entire body straightened, his jaw clenching in anger as he suddenly swung, wanting to get the upper hand. Miguel ducked beneath the punch and threw his own fist out while he was down, punching Axel in the chest again.
"Point!"
Miguel bounced on his toes and he moved back and away from Axel. He started his prep for a roundhouse, turning until he had to look at Axel from over his shoulder.
And Julianna's heart practically stopped.
She suddenly felt all the air leave her lungs and her stomach churn as she watched Axel close in on Miguel. "Oh my God... His back..." Julianna breathed out, her voice barely coming out with her words. Robby barely managed to hear her from just inches away from her. He looked to his sister then turned back to the fight, Miguel still leaving his back completely open for Axel to hit.
Julianna's hands shook as they raised up to her mouth. She felt nervousness–maybe bile–rise up her throat as the school fight from junior year played over in her head. It was a flash of second that she saw Miguel at the bottom of the staircase all over again when Axel ran toward Miguel.
And he dropped low for a leg sweep.
Jules let out a breath that made her whole body relax. She couldn't look away from the fight, her eyes glued on Miguel flipping over Axel's leg. As Axel pushed himself up, Miguel's foot whipped out, hitting Axel right in the face.
"Point!"
Axel's jaw clenched and although Jules couldn't see his face since his back was to her, she noticed the way his ears started to redden and could've bet that his whole face had turned red in anger. He lunged forward, his knee raising and heading straight for Miguel.
Miguel sidestepped just in time and Axel was quick to spin back around to face him. He sent punch after punch toward Miguel, teeth bared and face red from the fight and in anger. Miguel swatted Axel's final two punches away and threw his own fist forward, hitting Axel's jaw.
"Point!"
Axel threw a punch, but Miguel grabbed a hold of his arm mid-strike. He twisted Axel until he was locked in place against Miguel and as fast as he could so Axel wouldn't break out of his hold, Miguel drove his knee up into Axel's gut.
"Point!"
Axel grabbed onto the collar of Miguel's gi and threw himself backward, hoping to throw Miguel off balance, but Miguel flipped over him, landing on his feet on the other side of Axel. They both sprang back up, leaping into the air at the same time to kick the other, their kicks colliding and both getting blocked.
When he landed, Axel ran at Miguel again. As he threw a punch, Miguel caught Axel's arm, and used the same move he had just used moments ago, yanking Axel toward him and jamming his knee into Axel's chest.
"Point!"
Miguel let go of Axel, tossing him toward the center of the mat. Axel stumbled, barely catching his footing before Miguel was running at him again, driving a kick into his side.
"Point!"
Axel folded into himself, gasping in pain as his hands flew to his side. Julianna feels her breath hitch as Miguel uses that moment to flip toward Axel, his foot kicking out and hitting Axel right in the face.
"Point!" Daryll yelled as Julianna's eyes moved from the fight and to the scoreboard. She felt herself smile at the large, "15-15" shining bright on the screen.
Miguel letting out a loud, final battlecry made Julianna's head snap back to the fight. He charged forward and jumped. Axel stayed frozen, not knowing what Miguelk was about to do and not knowing how to fend for himself.
It happened in seconds, Miguel's foot kicking out and connecting with Axel's face cheek.
And Axel hit the mat. Hard.
The buzzer blared and Daryll stepped forward, his hand closest to Miguel raising in the air. "Knockdown! Winner!" He yelled and Jules felt like she was the one that had been kicked, the wind knocking out of her completely as she screamed.
"Holy shit!" She yelled as relief and joy crashed over her. She spun toward Robby beside her, the boy already facing her with a smile that was just as big as her. His crutches barely kept him upright as she lunged into him, arms wrapping around his neck.
The two let out mixes of laughter and cheers over Miguel's win and when they pulled apart, they saw their dad already on the mat, pulling Miguel into a hug. Jules was quick to follow after, reaching Miguel just as he and her dad pulled away from their hug.
She crashed into Miguel's chest in seconds, the boy letting out a groan at the impact, but hugging back and laughing seconds later.
"You did it!" She cried, half laughing, half cheering as she hugged him tight. Miguel just laughed, breathless and flushed, his arms wrapping around so neither of them fell over since she was swaying.
Jules pulled away just enough to see Miguel's face, still in his arms. Her smile made Miguel's double in size and she shook his shoulders crazily. "Champion!" She screamed and Miguel laughed at her excitement, his chest rumbling against hers.
"Champions!" He corrected, his voice practically roaring as he copied Julianna's movements and shook her this time.
Suddenly, arms wrapped around the two of them and a body jumped and hollered. It didn't take too long for Jules to realize it was Eli practically howling in her and Miguel's ears.
Julianna giggled, pulling out of her hug with Miguel to let Eli properly hug Miguel with Robby.
She felt a small tap on her shoulder and Jules, still buzzing in excitement and the high of winning, practically jumped to turn around. Two men stood behind Julianna and flinched at her spin, both of them stepping back and a bit from being startled by her energy.
Jules was about to apologize for startling them before she noticed the big, gold trophy in one of the man's hands that had, "Sekai Taikai Female Champion" engraved onto the bottom.
"Here you go, Miss Lawrence." The man holding the trophy said, smiling at the way Julianna's eyes sparkled and her entire face lit up. He started to push the trophy toward her, waiting for her to take it from his grasp and it was almost like her hands and the trophy were magnets getting drawn together. Her hands shot out to grab it.
"Oh my God!" Jules whispered in excitement, her voice shaking with laughter as she readjusted the trophy in her arms, not expecting it to be so heavy.
She looked over her shoulder to Miguel, who was now hugging Sam. "Miguel!" Jules screamed as the same people that handed her her trophy walked toward Miguel with his.
Miguel's head snapped away from his girlfriend and to Jules and then to the Sekai Taikai worker. His eyes sparkled at the trophy coming toward him and Sam let go of their hug so he can meet the men in the middle.
He took the trophy happily, readjusting it in his arms just like Jules had as he moved to stand side by side with her.
"May I have your attention?" Gunther yelled into the microphone over the cheering.
Slowly, the celebrating started to die down and everyone focused on the man standing on the corner of the mat.
"What an absolutely thrilling conclusion. Please join me in congratulating out girls' and boys' champions, Julianna Lawrence and Miguel Diaz of Cobra Kai!" Gunther cheered, raising his hand to gesture to the two teens as they stepped forward.
Jules giggled at the way the audience roared in applause. She lifted her trophy high with both hands. Her arms shook from the strain of her fight just hours ago and just her nerves and blood running wild at the thrill.
"This leaves us only to declare our overall dojo champion, but we cannot do that." Gunther said as Miguel and Julianna lowered their trophies.
Julianna's eyebrows furrowed and she turned to Miguel just as he looked to her. He mouthed a small "what?" that Jules only shrugged to. Why wouldn't Cobra Kai win? Both her and Miguel won?
"Because for the first time in out long and stories history, the Sekai Taikai has ended in a tie!" Gunther cheered.
Julianna was sure her heart and stomach sank all the way down to the floor as she turned her head to look back at the scoreboard. A tired breath of air past through her lips when she saw Cobra Kai was in fact tied with Iron Dragons, their scores both being 185.
"Fortunately, we have a protocol in place for just an occasion." Gunther reassured. Julianna turned to look back at him as he only smiled at the audience. "Per tradition, our overall champion will be determined by one final match between the dojos. To be fought by their senseis!"
As the audience roared in anticipation, Jules felt her stomach churn, her eyes moving to look at Sensei Wolf on one end of the mat, a big smirk on his face. Slowly, her eyes moved to the opposite end of the mat, her eyes falling on her dad, paler than he was just moments ago.
Jules huffed looking down at the trophy in her hands. "Are you fucking kidding me?"
