"The door to the library was slightly ajar, and I found him reading Anthony du Vivier's 630-page Atlas of Clinical Dermatology. He sat silently, slowly fingering through the words. The graphics on the page he had opened were most black African adults and children, some with leprosy but all in various states of hypopigmentary conditions. One image, of a child who had a large white abdominal patch and several more on his legs, appeared to catch his attention. He gazed at it for a long time before he began to read from the book aloud.
"Vitiligo is usually symmetrical, but occasionally can be segmental. The patches are completely depigmented and appear white, but not always in the initial stages," he read, and then stopped and turned to me.
"Nobody knows how devastated that child feels. These pictures only tell some of the story. They can never show the emotion that the child feels, in here." He said, pressing his fist tightly to his chest. He pulled up one of his trouser legs and said, "You see, I too have vitiligo!"
I was rather shocked to see the extent of his disease. For a long time, neither of us spoke, not daring to give words to our thoughts. Could it be that the world had been wrong all along about Michael Jackson, accusing him of denying his race while he actually had a medical condition that made his skin appear white?
"How bad is it?" I asked. He seemed to think about the answer for a moment and then sat back in the chair. Shyly he framed his face with his hands, lifted his shirt to show the porcelain-white patches on his body, and said, "It's very bad!"
