Chapitre 41

(Y/N) Pov:
It's been almost an hour since you've recognised your old friends, many feelings were felt. You were as happy and relieved to see them again as sad and melancholic due to past memories and friends. Caroline, Berthold and you got out of the barn and entered their cottage, it was very charming and comfortable...you felt at ease.
-"I still wonder how in the world you two met, got married and had a child." You spoke blankly, looking down at the wooden table you sat at with an empty gaze full of confusion. They just giggled.
-"You know, it was quite easy to find each other since everyone was saying we were crazy when talking about you. I still kept the angel metaphor by the way, I thought it suited you." Berthold said with a slight amused smile while looking at you. Yet, he continued.
-"So yeah, when you hear people whispering about another one who talks about an «angel» or a «young woman/man without a flag and with colours», you quickly connect the dots and follow the whispering until encountering said person." Berthold shrugged while moving slightly the glass he had in his hands, looking at the water who was moving inside. Caroline smiled while putting a hand on Berthold's chair while she was standing.
"Yes, we easily came into contact with each other and talked about how we knew you and our own experience in the war. Then, love just made its way." Caroline spoke softly with a gentle smile, making you smile too. Berthold stopped moving his glass around and put it down on the table before looking at Caroline.
-"My dearrrr, can we have a little wine? After all, having (Y/N) back with us is quite an event to celebrate, right??" Berthold asked with a charming smile and puppy eyes, but he was just met by Caroline's stern face.
-"Don't you think I forgot how you hid you had (Y/N) in the barn for I don't know how much time!" Caroline scowled at him like an angry mother and he just looked down to the table guiltily.
-"You make it sound very bad and weird..." Berthold mumbled quietly but she ignored it.
-"Plus, we need to spare the wine for later, Johann will bring back our guests one second or one other. So, enjoy your water." Caroline adds. You just got reminded of what you wanted to ask.
-"By the way, those guests, Johann and you didn't stop mentioning them, who are they?" You asked in slight confusion, Caroline and Berthold looked back at you.
-"Flora and Hannah? They are our friends. They told me you met them already when Hannah was just a little girl." Caroline said while looking at you, seeing your still confused state she smiled slightly.
-"They are Christoph's family." She said in a gentle voice. You furrowed your eyebrows and then you remembered. Of course... It was with them that you learned Christoph's death.
-"Oh..." You simply said as you remembered that time. You then blinked.
"Wait. Johann seemed to really like Hannah, is he in love with a child?!" You exclaimed, repulsed. The two parents blinked before laughing.
-"A child? (Y/N), it's been a while since you've met them. Hannah is now in her twenties." Caroline reassured you while still giggling softly. You facepalmed when you felt you were getting old.
-"ah...well it reassures me at least..." You said awkwardly. Then, you blinked when you remembered something.
"Wait a minute... If it's been 20 years since the time where I met her, when she already had the Weimar Republic flag on her cheek... What year are we in?" You asked quietly, even if you didn't wanna hear the answer. Berthold and Caroline shared a look before they looked back at you.
-"Well, we're in a dark era that's for sure. I feel like all of our friends's death didn't do nothing." Berthold said as he frowned and clutched the glass in his hands, which was retrieved by Caroline so he wouldn't break it. The atmosphere was tense. Caroline sadly sighed as she silently agreed to what Berthold said. But, knowing it didn't answer your question she looked at you and answered.
"We're in 1941 dearie. And it seems another Great War is happening." Caroline said sadly, looking down at you. You gulped. You knew you were going to arrive one day or another in WW2, but you weren't ready for it to be this soon.
-"I... Alright..." You mumbled as you looked down. You were now in Germany in 1941, how bad could this be? You thought sarcastically.
-"And even if back in the Great War nobody could tell which countries were bad or good, they were all guilty after all, all the tension just exploded at that moment. But in this war that's happening right now... I know pretty well which country is the bad one, and we all live in it." Berthold added as he glared at the ground, you couldn't help but feel bad. Caroline put a hand on Berthold's shoulder.
-"And yet you're one of the lucky ones, you don't have to go to the front, you don't know how relieved it makes me." Caroline said softly to her husband, you smiled a bit at the gesture before getting curious again.
-"I'm sorry to bring this up... But why exactly is this the case?" You asked quietly, you weren't accusing him, just curious. Berthold looked back at you and chuckled, trying to lift up the mood.
-"Oh, well... We're just kinda excluded from society... people find us weird and strange..." Berthold said with a slight smile. Seeing your confused state Caroline specified.
-"We...act quite differently from others, Berthold already told me that, due to your contact, we became more...'lively' than others, it kinda casts us aside since we all act more with feelings than the other citizens who clearly look like mindless creatures to be honest..." She said with a sort of awkward tone. She then frowned.
-"But.. it isn't the only thing." Caroline said and sit down on a chair.
-"We... exactly aren't very happy about the new government and our new leader... It just...makes us uneasy, and we are against it, making us more secluded. For some unknown reason, nothing happened to us since we've got suspicions he gets rid of those who aren't loyal to him, but we won't complain about that." Caroline said with furrowed eyebrows and Berthold hummed in agreement. You nodded. You clearly understood why they didn't think the Third Reich is a very good government.
-"So, our flag on our cheek is still the one of Germany, like it was during the Weimar Republic, we only have one child, which is against the Reich's standards... The whole thing is against us." Berthold said while chuckling, seemingly amused. Caroline, however, didn't share this mindset.
"You shouldn't take it so lightly! We could be arrested any day! Do I have to remind you how all those who were against the countryhuman ended? I don't want you or Johann to be taken from me, what would I become? Don't underestimate what the consequences will be." She said sternly while looking down at Berthold with her arms crossed. Berthold raised his hands in defeat.
-"Alright, alright, don't come at me... Let's just enjoy the time we have with (Y/N), it's been years since we've seen each other!" He said while Caroline huffed and sighed in defeat too.
-"Fine, you're right... It's been such a long time. What happened the last time you saw (Y/N)?" Caroline asked him in curiosity, you just blinked since you were a silent spectator of the scene. Berthold blinked as well to remember exactly.
-"The last time I saw them... I think it was during our last meal before the French attack. Christoph and I were speaking to them about the meeting between (Y/N) and German Empire. Now that I remember about it, it was kinda weird..." Berthold trailed off as he looked at you with an questioning gaze but you just got embarrassed and turned your head away so he couldn't see it. No way you were gonna mention what happened after that. Caroline noticed your embarrassing face and switched the subject.
-"Well! Personally for me, it was when the French struck, I was assigned to alert the German Empire and (Y/N) since they were together, I just exclaimed there was an attack before leaving into a rush to help the others to escape." Caroline said a bit loudly when standing up, making Berthold's gaze go back to her, but something through the window picked his attention as he smiled.
-"Ah! I can see that the ladies have arrived, Johann are with them at the gate." Berthold said before standing and walking to the door then he looked at Caroline and you.
-"Let's go shall we? We don't want to make them wait." He smiled and opened the door, Caroline nodded and walked towards him.
-"Of course, lead the way." She told him, then Berthold left the doorstep, Caroline walked over to the doorframe and before she got out she turned her head towards you with her hand resting on the handle.
-"I was thinking... Maybe it's best if I don't mention what you and German Empire were doing when I entered the room..." Caroline said quietly with a small awkward smile, before leaving as well. You just stood there while blushing in embarrassment. You thought she wouldn't have noticed since she was in a rush, but she still saw!
-"Oh god..." You mumbled and looked down, how embarrassing... You shook your head and slowly left the house as well to go meet the guests.

-"Send patrols everywhere! I want every inch of this land to be looked through! I want you to find them and bring them to me alright?! And if I find out that you hurt them... I'll make sure you'll regret the light of the day and despise any second of living!" A harsh and ominous voice ordered violently at a lone man who was here. The poor officer sweated and bowed in respect before leaving as fast as he could.
-"My friend, you seem quite agitated since a few days...May we know the reason behind this? We're in a war after all, I don't want you to get so violent on your own country.~" A melodious, but slightly deep voice chuckled next to the one who just yelled.
-"******* ***** is right, we can't afford to lose time over such frail matters, we need to focus on the task at hand. Your country is doing good, there's nothing you have to do about its small details for now." Another voice agreed, this time a feminine, but also cold voice. The owner was further away, preferring to stand and lean on the wall in a dark corner. The one who just ordered around stayed silent when he was being pointed out by his «coworkers». At the end, he just huffed and walked quickly out of the room, his anger obvious.
-"Well! He doesn't seem to be in his best mood today! Right, ******** ******?~" The other voice said once he left the room, the owner turned his head towards the woman in the dark corner.
-"Shut up, ******* *****. You're the only one who doesn't seem to have anything to do." She just said in a stern and cold voice as she left the room too in silence, leaving him alone in the quiet room.
"Ah...what a shame~..." He mumbled to himself with a slight smile, looking at the two ways the two other just left from. His smile vanished once he was completely alone.
-"What a shameful disgrace indeed." He whispered in a cold tone, his eyes empty before he too left the room.
[...]
-"They are here... I can feel that they are here... I thought they were dead... But they're not...it's a miracle, they're a miracle, my tears brought them back to life. I need to find them, I NEED to. They're my angel, my god, my everything! I can finally see them again... I can finally them again! I CAN FINALLY SEE THEM AGAIN- Calm down. Be patient. Impatience will do nothing, it'll just hurt them. I can feel they're here, in my country, in their home. They'll just go back where they belong to: with me. Oh my dear angel! I can't wait, I can't wait to see you being brought back to me! What will your reaction be when you'll see me? Oh, I can't wait to see your gorgeous face again, I CAN'T - But calm down. They'll come back. It's a truth. They HAVE to. I need to focus on the war, so my land can be even greater for their big arrival! Soon, soon enough...they'll be mine. The angry man who left the room locked himself in his office and started giggling and laughing maniacally, he scratched his red skin to restrain himself from letting it all out, making the blood he oh so loved flowing out of his veins, he was laughing like a sick man, something he actually was. He looked with eyes full of euphoria at the sky through his window. He knew he didn't have to wait long before seeing them again.
-"Oh, (Y/N)... I'll see you in my dreams until then...~" He giggled to himself, his cheeks reddening even more than it was originally.
-"I miss you~"
