The first 'incident' was when she was ten. 

Athena and some kids from her school were at the park, playing hide and seek. Athena, not being the...brightest child, chose behind a tree in the shade, one of her friends had searched there first, and had walked straight past her. They'd tried to look, but it was like they couldn't, there was just darkness in the shadows.

 Athena had stayed there for hours and no one could find her. Her parents went crazy, calling in all their friends to search the park, Athena fell asleep however and when she exited the shadows, she couldn't understand why no one could see her. Her parents played it off as panic, that it's gotten too dark and they just hadn't noticed her, but she wasn't allowed near that park again.

The second, she was twelve, she didn't want to go to bed, and her mother had turned the lights off in her room, but every time, they would re-light as the halfway darkened. It took hours of shouting from her mother and trips to the under-stairs cupboard from her father to stop. Her parents told themselves it was just an electrical fault, but deep down, they knew.

The third...the third was when it all went wrong. She was sixteen and had gone to the park with some mates...well, in reality, it was a field. And it was less of a party more of a sitting around and drinking. When she came back, she was tipsy and her father was downstairs, her aunt was staying the night so they were up talking and chatting up whilst her mum went to bed early.

"Where've you been?"

"Out with some friends," Athena starts, trying to walk in a straight line to get a glass of water.

"At this time? It's nearly midnight,"

"Uh yeah," Athena looks at the clock "Sorry,"

"Have you been drinking?"

"What?! No!"

"So, what if she has?" Athena's aunt laughs

"Not now Beth," her father snaps and Athena turns around "Were you drinking?"

"I... I had a few sips of my friend's drinks,"

"A few sips?"

"Yes Dad! A few sips!" Athena rolls her eyes

"You're sixteen!"

"You're saying you didn't have a drop of alcohol until your 18th birthday?"

"Yes!"

"What a boring life you must've had," Athena's aunt laughs and her dad glares at her

"Look, you shouldn't be staying out all night drinking, what if the police -"

"Oh my god! It's not drinking! It was a few sips to try some stuff!"

"What were you smoking as well?"

"No! Where did you get that from?"

"I don't know, where's all this attitude coming from?"

"Nowhere...I'm just tired and want to go to bed,"

"You're not going to bed until you sober up,"

"Going to bed will sober me up," Athena looks at her aunt who shrugs, obviously also confused

"Look just -"

"Just let me go to sleep!" Athena stops and the lights in the room darken "I'm tired and want to go to bed, can you shout at me in the morning?!" she closes her eyes and when she opens them, the room's pitch-black bar from a glowing coming from her hands where a golden ball of energy lies. 

Athena screams.

Her hands fly up and as her palms face outwards, the door to the kitchen flies off its hinges and a yellow coating covers it, before disappearing and the lights turn back on.

"I didn't - I didn't mean to!" Athena cries, turning to her father

"Get out,"

"What? I can't - I didn't -"

"Dan, you can't kick her out!" Athena's aunt stands "She's clearly going through something!"

"Going through something? We've been watching her do freak shit like this for years! Then she comes back drunk and breaks my door!" Athena backs away, grabbing her chest as she leans against a kitchen counter. What did she just do?

"She's your daughter, treat her with some respect!"

"You know what, you can get out too!"

"What is wrong with you Daniel?" Athena lets herself be led away from her father as her arms shake "Come on Thee, you can stay at mine for the night," she turns back "Whilst your dad gets his priorities straight,".

And that night, was when everything changed for Athena.
