THE FANTASY ISLAND : Warm Up Round
It's somehow becoming a pattern. I go on an unplanned hiatus and then come back and join a graphics war. This time I joined a war hosted by @eggyeuls and even with just warm up round I know I'll have a great time.
Prompt was to create an inviting poster for "The Fantasy Island". It had to be either object-based or typography. Rest was up to us.
As always, I diverged.
I don't know why I think cyberpunk the moment someone says the phrase "where dreams come true". Yes, I could've gone the fairy tale route but I think I became jagged with age. So, I go for always just a bit of unsettling.
First thing that came to mind are paintings of "exotic" places that were popular for couple of centuries in European art. I say "exotic" because they were mostly made-up landscapes pretending to be genuine portrayals of far away places painted by people who mostly never saw them. And that coupled with my cyberpunkish skepticism created this idea of future travel.
I wanted to create a poster that is just one in the series of posters for this imaginary travel agency. In this one they are promoting a tropical destination of The Fantasy Island. And just like the masters of the old, they can't produce a facsimile. Everything looks a bit tropical but not really. The frame is supposed to point to the fact it is, despite efforts, just a reinvention of something real. And because my experience with technology taught me that everything glitches from time to time, almost all elements on the poster are a bit out of focus. Works also as another way to point to it not being real.
The title was a pain to make. If anyone ever wondered how I write, that's my handwriting. At least one version of it. I wanted to make it out of vines, but that proved to be beyond my skill or patience level. It looked pretty messy and mostly unreadable. Shadows were all over the place. One day, I'll learn how. It'll haunt me. But in the meantime, I'm happy with this way too.
Kinda want to make some other posters for this "agency". Maybe, one day. Adding it as another item on a to-do list for the future Mo.
Not sure if these are all resources I used as I couldn't fully commit to a concept which led to lot of adding and deleting.
