Chapter 3

Kara tapped on the cubicle door softly. "Are you okay?"

To her surprise, the door slammed open, leaving Kara face to face with the angry girl who had just opened it. "Don't you realize how rude it is to listen in on other people's problems?"

"I'm... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to," Kara stammered. "I just thought you needed a friend like I do. I'm pretty new to Midvale High and I don't exactly know anybody, besides my foster sister."

The strange girl stared over Kara's shoulder and then sighed. It was almost as if she was trying to determine whether or not Kara had heard everything she had just vented in the cubicle.
Nonetheless, the girl picked up her bag and stared back at Kara. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have acted that way. It was rude. You didn't happen to hear me back there, did you?"

Kara paused, wondering whether she should stay silent on the matter. But at the same time, Kara was not a fan of telling lies either. She went with the safest answer. "I'm not entirely sure of everything I heard... But you seem pretty hard on yourself. Is everything okay?"

"I'm fine, it's fine... my name's Crystal."

Kara held out her hand and gave her own name, "Kara."

The girl shook Kara's hand and stepped out of the cubicle and over to the sink. She stared suspiciously down at the sink as if she wanted to say something, but then turned back to Kara. "So, you said you were new? Did you want me to show you around or something?"

"I've been here for a few weeks now, so I kind of know my way... But, I could still use a friend."

Crystal nodded and the smile that lit up her face, replaced any sign of cold anger that had been there before. "Sounds good. But maybe we shouldn't hideaway in here, it's not the cleanest environment."

Kara and Crystal made their way out into the school grounds where the sun was hot, and groups of students were talking, eating or using their cellphones. When Kara had traveled to earth in her cryostasis pod, the computer had transmitted data to her brain about the culture of humanity. But unfortunately, her pod had been knocked off course, leaving the information a little backdated. The evolution of human technology was one of those pieces of information that Kara had needed to adjust to after arriving.

"That sun is beautiful, don't you think?" Crystal asked, knocking Kara from her thoughts. Kara could see that Crystal was rubbing her hands together to keep warm. Which was funny, because the temperature had certainly spiked in heat that day. Summer was coming.

"Are you cold?" Kara asked her new friend.

"Just a little bit. It was cold inside, didn't you notice?"

Kara shook her head, but she didn't reply. Instead, she noticed Alex and her friends standing by the gate, on the other side of the schoolgrounds. They were deep in conversation but before she could even consider just what they might be discussing, Kara noticed a blue tinge to Crystal's palor. The girl was still rubbing her hands together and it seemed like she just couldn't get warm.

"Are you okay, Crystal?" Kara asked. "Maybe we should take you to see somebody."

"I-I'm fine." Crystal spoke with a shiver. "L-Look. We've gotta head to class shortly, but there's something I need to do before I go."

Before Kara could ask what that 'something' was, Crystal ran off in the opposite direction hiding behind one of the buildings. The school siren rang out over Kara's ears, so reluctantly, Kara made her way to class.
