Chapter 3

After a long hour of division, it was finally break time. Mr Irving capped his pen, and announced that everyone could go.

"Except for Katie. Stay behind." Katie watched everyone rush out of the door, talking and laughing with their friends. She had her own games she played by herself, but sometimes she wanted a real person to talk to and laugh with. Mr Irving closed the door, and turned to face her. His eyes were black holes, sucking out all life and fun from his surroundings. His beard and hair made him resemble a brown bear, and not the cuddly kind. As he walked over to Katie, she started to tremble. She knew what was coming.

"I thought you said I wouldn't have to stay in at break."

"If you did your work. Show me what you did during maths."

Katie's hands shook so badly that she could barely open her book. She showed him the five questions she had done.

"Only that many in one hour? Even a five year old could do more than that," he mocked.

"They were hard," she whispered. It wasn't exactly a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either. Mr Irving leaned closer to her, starting to intrude her personal space. She backed away.

"Don't talk back to me!" A drop of spit flew out of his mouth and landed on the floor. "Show me what you spent your time doing." His volume dropped,  but the danger level didn't. Katie paused, unwilling. "Show me!" She sprung into action and showed him the page. He studied it intently for a few minutes, before looking up at her.

"You call this art? What a stupid waste of time."

"I wanted to show Fred what a flamingo looked like," she said. Her eyes started to fill with tears.

"Who's Fred? Your boyfriend? I feel sorry for him," he smirked. Katie felt a heat rising within her. She started shaking harder, not from fear, but from rage. White hot, blazing rage.

"Why are you so mean to me? Fred is amazing and better person than you will ever be, and he's a dinosaur! I hate you, you're a horrible person and I hope ... I hope that you..."

Before Katie could come up with a suitable insult, Mr Irving snatched her drawing and walked up to the bin. He pinched the top of the page with both fingers. Katie froze, and realising what he was about to do, a tear slid down her cheek.

"You are a lazy, stupid child that will never get anywhere in the world with your babyish scribblings! How dare you disrespect my authority, and call me names." Tears started coming faster and harder. What had she done? Mr Irving suddenly tore the page in half.

"Every tear equals once more I will rip this page. Can you understand that, or is it still too difficult?" Katie couldn't stop the sobs. Within minutes, her picture was now scrap paper.

"Stop those silly tears! Break is over, sit down at once," he snarled, before opening the door and allowing the rest of the class in. The children at her table called her names because of her red eyes. If only they knew what she had to go through every day. The worst part about it was that she didn't get to show Fred the treehouse.

A/N Poor Katie! Why do you think she hasn't told anybody about this yet?
