Chapter 50: Like Daughter, Like Father
An abandoned Ultratech warehouse sat in silence as it rotted in time. The moon's light exposed the innards where two people faced each other. A table remained in the middle, packed with a pile of money.
John Hargensen was at the table's left, with his clothes scruffy and his hair ruffled. Once a lawyer, his world crashed when Black Prom happened, which claimed his daughter, Chris. Since then, he bore his hatred for the person responsible for his suffering.
A woman with pale skin was opposite to John. Her eyes gleam an eerie yellow, emitting a daunting vibe. Her long black hair reached her chest, and a decorative mask hid her upper face. A pair of bladed gauntlets with two talons wrapped around each of her wrists.
The woman placed her hands on her hips. "Only half? I expected more."
"You'll receive the other half once you complete your mission," John said. "So, are the rumors true?"
"Consider them true." She plopped a folder on the table. "It was a risk to sneak into Ultratech."
John reviewed the contents and scowled at the pictures of Carrie. "So, she is alive."
"You must be determined to kill this child."
"If you had met her, you'd see she's anything but a child. I want it quick like you did with that Ultratech protestor."
"You never proved it was me."
"Oh, please. The guy vanished from existence and had webs around it. Impressive."
"Thank you. As for your request, I could wrap Carrie in a web and slash her throat."
"The body and evidence must vanish, and I want her to suffer."
"Hmm, tricky yet challenging."
"I'll pay you extra."
"No need. Besides, I love a challenge."
"One more thing, Sadira. Are you sure I'll be clear once you finish the job?"
"You have my word." Sadira amassed the money and vanished into the darkness.
John glared at Carrie's picture. Soon, you'll be back in Hell.
Carrie meditated in her quarters inside the Night Guard base. She didn't visit the Global Corruption Force Headquarters. What reaction would Rita and Sue express if they learned of her existence?
"Carrie?" a voice called, bringing her to reality. She looked around until she spotted an unusual puddle beside her.
"Is that you, Glacius?" Carrie asked.
The puddle slithered in front of her and morphed into its alien form. "How are you?"
"Okay, I guess. When the stranger brought me to Jago, I wanted to start fresh, but now..."
"In the tournament, the humans viewed me as their own in a costume. I didn't mind it, though. If the humans learned what I was...I don't need that attention."
"Are there others like you?"
"Yes, but not with this appearance. We can bend structures at a molecular level, allowing us to create shells. We can also adapt to the environment-crucial to hunting criminals."
"Am...am I a criminal?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it sounds like you're hunting those with dangerous abilities. Once you find them, you sentence them to death."
"Oh, Carrie, I may be many things, but not a child killer. Are there others in your family that have it? Your powers, I mean."
"My grandmother on my mother's side first had it, and it skipped Mama. Why?"
"I might have a theory from delving into telekinesis among humans. I reflected on the times when ARIA had used me for her projects. A person exposed to advanced technology could gain strange abilities. In time, it'll drift into this inheritance path."
"Did ARIA use someone in my family with these projects?"
"It's possible. If that's okay, I need to peer into your mind."
"I should warn you, Glacius. My mind stores things...that should remain buried."
Glacius nodded and placed two of his fingers on Carrie's forehead. Images and sounds flashed before him, and as Carrie warned, not all good. He recoiled until he discovered something rooted in Carrie's subconscious. Its presence was enough to break the mental link, leaving the alien shaking.
"Are you all right?" Carrie inquired.
"Yes, I'm fine. I need a moment." Glacius rubbed his temples. This poor creature. Jago had mentioned Carrie's old life, but it's worse than I thought. As for this evil presence I sensed, what does it mean?
"Glacius?" Carrie spoke through telepathy. "You won't tell Jago of what you saw in my mind, would you?"
"We're back." Jago was by the entrance. He and his friends had returned from their visit to the Global Corruption Force base.
"Jago, just who I need to see." Glacius assured Carrie in telepathy, "I won't tell him anything. I'll leave that to you."
"Thank you," Carrie said. Once the alien departed with Jago, she resumed her meditation. She continued with her session when she sensed a disturbance.
At first, she assumed it was Jago, but this presence was off. Carrie arose from the floor and explored inside the citadel. She approached a pyramid-shaped temple, where Maya forbid anyone to venture. However, the disturbance derived here, so she grabbed a torch and crept downstairs. A damp, musty odor burned into Carrie's nostrils. She covered her nose and kept going until she stopped; the disturbance was more potent. She waved the torch around until she spotted a golden set of eyes.
Carrie trembled as her heart drummed from her chest and her stomach churned. A woman clung to the ceiling, equipped with bladed gauntlets.
"Hello." The woman curled her lips to a sneer.
Carrie dropped the torch and dashed out of the room. Before she reached the exit, something tripped her. Her eyes widened when a sticky substance clung to her foot. Suddenly, something pricked her neck. Carrie removed a dart, but the muscles around her body slowly became stiff.
The woman lowered herself with the webs and approached Carrie. *"Txn nī̂ thảmị khuṇ t̄hụng reīyk chı̂? How about we go outside to talk?" The woman wrapped Carrie in a webbed cocoon and carried her.
"Help! Someone help!" Carrie yelled through telepathy.
As they arrived at the roof, the woman scanned the area to latch Carrie. The wall will do. With her webs, the woman pinned her victim. She removed the web surrounding Carrie's head to look into the girl's eyes.
"A shame you must die. I am Sadira, leader of the Red Eyes of Rylai. The poison I injected you came from the elusive stone spider. The poison won't kill you, though; it leaves you immobile." Sadira stroked Carrie's cheek with her blades, drawing blood. "Hard to imagine a girl like you caused such havoc. You would make an excellent assassin for my clan. Unfortunately, I must follow my client's orders. After all, a spider shouldn't play with its food."
Sadira aimed her blades towards Carrie's throat. Before she could land the fatal blow, an instant blur pounced on the assassin. A flaming cat appeared until the flames vanished, revealing Orchid. Seconds later, the gang arrived, removing the sticky webs off Carrie.
"Well, what do we have here?" Orchid twirled one of her eskrima sticks.
Sadira recovered from the tackle. "How did you know I was here?"
"Carrie sent a mental message to my brother, and the rest was history."
Sadira paused until her eyes widened, but it didn't matter. "So, how long has it been since our last encounter?"
"How's Ultratech been working for you? Oh, wait, a little bird told me ARIA had fired you. Now, you're resorting to killing children? How low can you get?"
"ARIA abandoned me when she sent me to Japan on an assignment. After I escaped from that ghost, Cinder came and disbanded me, but I'll show them. ARIA will regret the day she messed with me. As for my client, let's just say I'm bringing justice tonight."
"I won't let you do that. Also, you've been an itch I wanted to scratch for a long time."
Orchid tossed a flashing smoke grenade she stored inside the fanny pack. As the explosion muddled Sadira, she struck the assassin with a flying kick. She then followed with her attack, landing a fierce blow from her weapons.
Sadira recovered and hurled throwing knives. Orchid threw a smoke grenade in response. The two exploded on contact, creating a smoke wall. Sadira emerged from the smoke to connect a flying kick, but Orchid blocked.
The agent switched into her Firecat mode and pounced on Sadira. She clamped her jaws on the assassin's left shoulder.
Sadira cried, but fighting through the pain, she jabbed Orchid with her blades. Orchid screeched as she released Sadira and reverted to her human form. Blood leaked from her right shoulder from the stab wound but didn't deter the agent. Sadira clutched on her left shoulder before returning to her battle stance.
Orchid moved for a throw, but Sadira broke away. The assassin sent her in the air with a backflip kick, landing a few blows. She tapped into her power as her skin turned black, and spider silk coated her blades.
Shit! Orchid evaded one web trap, but Sadira planted another, trapping her.
Sadira continued her attack until Orchid countered. She kicked Orchid in the air and flung silk-attached knives onto her. Afterward, she struck more before she sent her opponent on land. She leaped and flung throwing knives.
Orchid recovered and dodged the weapons. The agent switched to her FireCat form and leaped towards her. Sadira planted a web trap, but Orchid burned through it and tackled her. Returning to human form, she stormed Sadira with her assault, defeating her.
"Itsy bitsy, yes, you were." Orchid stared at her downed opponent before she helped the gang.
Sadira planned a sneak attack until something encased her in ice. Her scream grabbed everyone's attention. Glacius floated in front of the assassin, with focused light in both its hands. Sadira swore in Thai before the alien sealed her mouth with ice.
"That should keep you silent." Glacius shifted his attention to the gang. "Is everyone okay?"
"We're fine," Orchid said, "but these webs are hard to remove off Carrie."
"Stand back." The alien blasted a sheet of ice around the webs, freezing them solid. He placed his hand on the ice and pumped energy, shattering it. He caught Carrie before she fell. She was still immobile but alive.
"Is Ultratech responsible for this?" Eagle asked.
Orchid swung her head from one side to another. "Not from what she told me, and it can't be God's Crusaders. Whoever sent Sadie is not only familiar with Carrie but wants her dead."
Jago glared at Sadira. He had enough of people trying to end Carrie's life for no reason. "Who in their right mind wants to kill Carrie?
"Not sure, but she needs help."
"What?! We have never sent Sadira to kill Carrie!" Cinder said after learning what had happened at the Night Guard base.
"Calm down, you hothead. You and ARIA had nothing to do with it, despite my chagrin," Orchid said.
ARIA approached Jago holding the inert Carrie, and scanned the girl. She discovered Carrie's diaphragm slowing from the poison. "Sadira has injected Carrie with stone spider venom. However, thanks to advanced medicine, we should negate the toxins."
"Geez, a stone spider? Those things are uber-rare in South America. How the hell did Sadira obtain one, let alone the poison?" Cinder queried.
"Irrelevant for now, for we have questions with our former employee." ARIA turned her attention towards Sadira, who remained trapped in ice.
"Don't think you'll receive any answers from me. I promised my client justice, and I never break it."
"We expected that, but what interests me is what prompted you to do it. You're not the type to kill children, even when you were working for me."
"It wasn't the same for Carrie when she started killing children and destroying towns."
"That does it!" TJ cracked his knuckles. "Normally, I don't hit women, but today, you're an exception!"
Orchid held TJ back. "Calm yourself! This is how Sadira works: pushing your buttons until you play into her hands."
As much as he wanted to pound Sadira, he composed himself. "How do we go along with this?"
"I shall try. Sadira is also responsible for breaking the '88 Decrees,'" Glacius said.
The assassin scoffed, smirking. "If you plan to interrogate me, good luck. I will never break the word of my client nor reveal the name."
"You may not want to confess, but your mind might." The alien planted his icy palm into Sadira's head. Images flashed in his mind's eye until he removed his hand. Sadira fell unconscious afterward.
"Did you find anything?" Maya asked.
"Plenty. Does a John Hargensen ring a bell?" The alien's answer had the entire room fall quiet.
Orchid clenched her hands into fists. "Jago, take Carrie to the hospital wing."
"Orchid-"
"Do it now, please."
"Just go, man. We'll handle this," TJ said. Not wanting to argue, Jago headed to the infirmary with Carrie.
Orchid remained at her spot, drawing deep breaths to quell the raging flames inside her. That fucking bastard! I hoped that YouTube video would embarrass him, but now, he's forced my hand.
"You must have a few choices of words for him," ARIA said.
"Oh, do I ever." Orchid's voice laced with poison.
ARIA glanced at the other two Fulgore units and nodded. Once they received their instructions, the cyborgs vanished. After that, Orchid approached a computer and typed on the keyboard.
"What are you doing?" Cinder noted.
"Giving this bastard a present he'll never forget," Orchid replied.
"Okay, I'm out of the loop. Who is John Hargensen?" Kim said.
"I should explain." ARIA disclosed to Kim of Carrie's role during Black Prom. Once finished, Kim combed her hair with her fingers. "What I have told you is based on what Orchid and I have examined. The only person to tell the authentic story of Black Prom is Carrie. However, from her traumatic events, she would never speak of it."
"I don't blame her, but don't you think Jago should know?" Kim said.
Before anyone spoke further, the Fulgore units returned with Sadira's client.
Orchid approached the ex-lawyer with her arms folded. "So, tell us, was it worth it?"
"After what that monster did to my daughter, it was worth trying," John said.
"Is that so, since you didn't give a damn about your daughter when she was alive. You knew she was a menace, and yet, you did nothing. You should have stopped her from messing with Carrie."
"Don't you dare defend that freak in front of me! She's the reason I lost my job! Someone restored a memory chip from my daughter's phone, revealing everything. This is that bitch's fault! She's just another Margaret!"
Orchid punched John's face. A small stream of blood leaked from his left nostril as he groaned. "Carrie is not a freak, and she's nothing like that witch! You brought this on yourself by not restraining your spoiled brat on a leash!"
"Johnathan Hargensen, you could be behind bars for hiring an assassin. Vengeance cannot bring the dead back to life," ARIA said.
"Do you think keeping me in jail would make a difference? I'll do everything in my power to ensure that Carrie White will never be safe."
"That won't happen, and here's why," Orchid said. "I hacked into your bank account and donated your money to charities."
"What? You're lying!"
Orchid returned to the computer with a devious smile. She scrolled the names until she found John's name and clicked on it. Once Orchid moved away, John's eyes bulged as his bank account was negative.
"YOU BITCH!" John tried to lunge at the rebel agent, but the Fulgore units held him back. He pried himself off and drew a gun. Before he fired, Maya threw her light dagger, knocking the firearm off his hand.
Orchid summoned her FireCat, and the fiery beast pounced on John, baring its teeth.
Maya approached John, letting the Vengeance dagger float above his head. "Be grateful that my friend's irmáo is not in this room. He would've sliced off your head had he been aware of your murderous intent."
Orchid patted her friend's shoulder. "Calm down, Maya."
"What the hell are you?" John said.
"We're humans, like you and everyone else, well, almost everyone. If you come after Carrie again, my FireCat will tear your balls and eat them. For now, I'll be merciful, so consider this your only pardon."
Once Orchid snapped her fingers, the FireCat scratched John's face and vanished. John cried as he grabbed his face, his bravado gone.
"Take Mr. Hargensen to one of our cells," ARIA instructed. "Cinder, inform law enforcement. They'll be pleased that we have their fugitive."
The Fulgore units grabbed John and dragged him out of the room.
TJ scoffed. "What a bastard. You okay, O?"
"Yeah, I...If anyone needs me, I'll be checking on my brother and Carrie."
Orchid stepped out of ARIA's office. Though she brought justice for Carrie, John struck a chord in her nerves. She arrived at the hospital wing, where Jago watched over Carrie. "How is she doing?"
"Carrie is fine," Jago said. "The doctor administered the remedy for the poison. I sensed a storm in your aura."
"A storm? Try an exploding star from space." Orchid leaned against the wall. "I can't stand it when someone judges another based on reputation. That bastard will never understand the hell Carrie endured."
Jago approached his sister and hugged her. "Don't let that bother you. I would like to meet the person who conducted this cowardly act."
Orchid smirked as she imagined her brother pounding John. "One day, Jago. One day."
