Bucky drove for hours, stopping to get gas in the early hours of the morning when the sky was starting to turn the lightest shade of blue. The stars were slowly slipping away to bring someone else in the world the joy of seeing their beauty. Bucky walked back to his car, stuffing his wallet into his pant pocket and smiling to himself when he saw Jo fast asleep using his sweater as a blanket. The boy started the car up once more before hitting the road once more, passing early birds or people like him. People that couldn't bring themselves to sleep - the people that had been driving for hours to bring someone joy, even if it was for a split second.
The drive from where they were wasn't much longer. He knew exactly where he wanted to go, and he didn't care how long it took to drive there, he knew it would be amazing. The Elliot's lived on the far side of Brooklyn, in a small neighbourhood where everyone knew each other. It was quiet just the way Dennis liked it after coming home from the war. But Jo wanted more from life, she would go on rants about wanting to travel and see the world. When she would talk about seeing the world, her eyes would light up but Bucky only felt a sting of pain because he knew no matter how much he wanted to go with her - his home was Brooklyn.
Before he knew it, Bucky was pulled into a small parking lot right before Brooklyn bridge, where Brooklyn would meet New York. He rolled up his now half open window and turned to Jo. Her hair wild as ever and her one knee brought up to her chest as she slept. "Doll, wake up." Bucky whispered, reaching over to shake the girl softly. Jo slowly opened her eyes before being greeted by Bucky's warm blue eyes. "Morning darling." he greeted with a grin. "Morning Bucket." the girl replied through a yawn, stretching out her limbs.
"Come on," The boy encouraged, reaching into the back seat to grab a spare sweater for himself. "We're going to miss it." He added on. Jo gave him a tired yet confused stare before climbing out of the car. Bucky locked his car before grabbing Jo's small hand in his own and running down a small path. "Bucky where are we going?" Jo called, only getting a smile from the boy in return. "Come on!" He encouraged, before they walked down a small dip in the path before Jo stood still in awe.
"I've never seen it over the bridge before," the girl breathed. The clouds in the sky were painted with the soft hues of the morning sun. Pastel pinks and purples dancing together, weaving in and out of the orange glow the rising sun gave off. "It's amazing." she whispered. Bucky looked to the girl, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pressing a kiss to her temple. "We always watch the sunrise from the tree in your backyard, I figured we could use a change in scenery." He told her softly.
Jo looked up to the boy, their blue eyes meeting. His were as soft as the sky on a summer's day, where Jo's eyes were as deep as the crashing waves in the ocean. So similar yet completely different all at the same time. "I adore you, Buck." Jo said, a large smile on her face as the boy chuckled before looking back to the glowing sky. His arm was wrapped about the shorter girl in an attempt to keep the cool morning breeze from nipping at her.
The two stayed standing where they were, until the sun had finally made its appearance for the day. But with so, it was as if realization and panic set upon the girl. "I should have left my parents a note - or called them at a gas station they're probably worried sick-"
"Doll, you really think I'd take you to the other side of the city in the middle of the night without asking your parents first?" Bucky asked with a chuckle. Jo looked up to him, her eyes full of wonder. She adored how close the boy had gotten to her parents and how Steve would sometimes slip and call Mary 'mom.' Jo shook her head, a smile still evident as they slowly started to make their way back to the car. "There's a diner down the road that's open twenty four hours. I say we fuel up our bodies and head back. Steve had a plan of his own today." Bucky told her. Jo nodded her head, and let Bucky lead her back down the path they had come from and towards a diner on the corner of a side street. Jo was born and raised in the streets of Brooklyn but sometimes she felt like a tourist in her own city. Most days, she had no idea where the places Steve and Bucky even talked about were.
Bucky pushed open the door to the diner, allowing Jo to walk in before him. A lady behind the counter grinned at the pair before telling them to sit wherever they would like. The day was just starting for some, a man sat at the counter drinking a cup of coffee as he read the newspaper. An elder couple sat in a booth in the middle of the open windows, drinking tea and sitting quietly - enjoying each other's company. While a pair of teenage boys - not much older than Jo wolfing down large plates of breakfast and laughing together.
Bucky trailed behind Jo as she picked a booth in the corner, tucked beside a window and out of distance of the others trying not to disturb them. They settled down together, the waitress quickly coming over to ask what they'd like to drink. "A coffee, please." Bucky told her, looking up with a dazzling pearly white smile that would bring any girl to their knees. "Me too." Jo added in, making the waitress nod her head and walk away from the pair.
To the outside world, Bucky and Jo looked like lovers. Always walking close together and normally finding Bucky's arm strung over the girl's slender shoulders to make sure she wouldn't stray too far. While the girl looked around the world with bright eyes full of wonder. The pair looked over the menu quickly, ordering when they waitress brought them fresh coffee to start off their day.
Jo leaned over, grabbing the sugar before holding it over her cup and letting the little grains of sweetness fill her cup to her heart's content. Bucky knew how the girl liked her coffee, full of sugar and nothing else. Where as he would add cream until the dark brown liquid turned a creamy brown and one spoonful of sugar was enough for him. The two enjoyed their breakfast, quickly finishing up as Bucky tossed more than enough cash on the table to cover the food and a tip for the woman. They got up from their seats, Bucky's arm quickly finding its way around Jo as more early birds filled the cafe. "Thank you!" Jo called to the waitress who smiled and waved at the two as they left.
They made their way back down the street, the sun bringing back the late July heat as they made their way back to Bucky's car. Like always, he held the door open for her with a large grin before running over to his side of the car. "What do you say birthday girl? Ready for an adventure?" he asked, looking over to the girl in the passenger seat.
"Lead the way."
