Second Wave
The air crackled with tension as the second wave of monsters surged forth, filling the labyrinth with chaos. Kosu quickly assessed the situation: hulking hobgoblins lumbered forward, goblin mages began to chant in eerie tones, and agile goblin warriors and rangers took positions, ready to strike from the shadows. The number of enemies had increased dramatically, and Kosu felt the weight of the challenge press against him.
Fortunately, he noticed that the penalty buff seemed to only apply to the last goblin archer—the one he had been chasing. The other monsters, while formidable, were still within his capabilities.
Kosu's determination flared as he set his sights on the goblin ranger, who was preparing to fire another arrow. Ignoring the chaos around him, he charged forward, weaving between columns and using the labyrinthine layout to his advantage. As he closed the distance, he drew his weapon, ready to strike.
With a swift motion, he slashed at the goblin ranger, destroying its bow and cleaving through the creature's defenses. The ranger dissolved into computer bits, scattering across the floor before disappearing entirely. Kosu felt a rush of exhilaration; he was regaining control of the battlefield.
Now, with the goblin ranger out of the way, he turned his attention to the new threats. The hobgoblins were slow but powerful, while the goblin mages posed a significant danger with their spells. Kosu knew he needed to be strategic. He couldn't take them all on at once.
He quickly formulated a plan. The interior of the tower was dotted with traps—hidden spikes and pitfalls designed to ensnare unwary adventurers. If he could lure the enemies into these traps, he could thin their numbers without taking unnecessary risks.
Drawing the attention of one of the hobgoblins, Kosu retreated deeper into the labyrinth. The hulking creature followed, crashing through columns in its pursuit. Just as it approached a hidden spike trap, Kosu darted to the side, grinning as the hobgoblin stumbled into the trap, impaling itself on the jagged spikes.
The goblin mages, realizing their ally was down, began to chant louder, summoning dark energy. Kosu needed to act fast. He leaped forward, dodging spells that crackled dangerously close to him. He focused on one of the mages, closing the distance quickly and slashing at its staff. The weapon shattered, and the mage staggered back, its spells dissipating uselessly into the air.
Now, with one mage down, he turned to the remaining goblin warriors. They were charging him in a frenzy, but Kosu had a plan. He led them around a corner, where another spike trap lay hidden. As they barreled forward, Kosu ducked and rolled to the side. The goblin warriors collided with each other and stumbled into the trap, howling as they fell.
The chaos in the labyrinth was invigorating, and Kosu felt himself becoming more in tune with the environment. He used every corner, every column, and every trap to his advantage. The remaining enemies were becoming more disorganized as panic set in, and Kosu seized the opportunity.
He spotted the last goblin archer, still hidden and now more desperate, firing arrows wildly. Kosu decided to leave it for last, knowing it was still buffed but not as powerful as the chaotic mix of foes surrounding him. He focused on taking down the remaining goblin warriors and mages, using the terrain and traps to outmaneuver them.
One by one, the monsters fell, each defeat bolstering Kosu's confidence. He could feel the tide turning in his favor. Finally, with the last warrior dispatched, he turned his attention back to the goblin archer, who was now cornered and panicking.
"Time to finish this," Kosu declared, charging forward with renewed vigor. The labyrinth had tested him, but he was ready to face the final challenge of this wave. With a final, determined strike, he would clear the floor and move on to the next trial.
With a final swing of his weapon, Kosu dispatched the last of the goblin warriors, the creature dissolving into shimmering bits before vanishing completely. He took a moment to catch his breath, feeling the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.
As the last enemy fell, a notification popped up before him:
Wave 2 Cleared!
He glanced up at the countdown timer hovering above, relieved to see he still had about five minutes left before the next wave would begin. However, he knew better than to feel too comfortable. The programming behind the tower's trials was designed to escalate; each wave would be harder than the last, and he still had to clear a total of ten waves. The thought alone felt almost impossible.
"Why do I keep getting myself into these situations?" he muttered, shaking his head.
Kosu pushed aside his momentary frustration and shifted his focus. He needed to concentrate on the second victory condition—finding a way to advance to the next floor. With the clock ticking down, he quickly surveyed the labyrinthine surroundings for any clues or mechanisms that might lead him to the exit.
The walls of the tower were adorned with intricate carvings, and as he examined them, he noticed a series of symbols etched into the stone. They appeared to form a sequence, almost like a puzzle. Kosu approached the nearest wall, running his fingers over the cool stone, searching for a way to interact with it.
As he traced the symbols, he recalled something from his training: the tower often required adventurers to decipher riddles or activate mechanisms to unlock the next area. His heart raced with excitement as he began to piece together the symbols' arrangement.
Kosu stepped back, taking a moment to visualize the sequence. It was a trial of observation and memory, and he began to mentally note the order of the symbols. After a few moments of contemplation, he felt ready to try it out.
He raised his hand and pressed the first symbol, watching closely as the stone beneath it glowed faintly. Encouraged, he quickly pressed the next symbol in the sequence. One by one, he activated the symbols, the glow intensifying with each press.
Suddenly, a deep rumbling echoed through the labyrinth, and the ground shook slightly beneath him. Kosu felt a surge of adrenaline as he completed the final symbol, and with a loud grinding noise, a massive stone door began to slide open at the far end of the floor.
"Yes! I got it!" he exclaimed, relief washing over him. The door revealed a passageway leading upward, illuminated by a soft, inviting light. Kosu wasted no time, sprinting toward the entrance, eager to escape the challenges of the current floor before the next wave could begin.
As he crossed the threshold, the timer above him ticked down to just under a second. He could hear the distant sounds of the next wave gathering, and he knew he had narrowly escaped the impending chaos.
With a final glance back at the labyrinth he had just conquered, Kosu stepped through the doorway, ready to face whatever awaited him on the next floor. The Tower of Challenges was relentless, but he was determined to rise to the occasion and prove himself worthy of its trials.
