The Message
As the last shimmering bits of the alpha rabbit dissolved into the ether, a notification flashed before Kosu's eyes:
Congratulations! You have cleared Floor 2!
Reward: 300 gold and 3 artifact fragments.
A wave of exhilaration washed over him, but it was quickly tempered by the sharp pang of exhaustion and pain that shot through his body. Kosu looked down at his injuries, bruises and cuts reminding him of the fierce battle he had just endured. The second floor had taken its toll, and he realized that continuing the trials would be unwise.
With a heavy heart, he contemplated his next move. He had faced a myriad of challenges in the tower so far: the first trial had been a chaotic melee against various monsters, while the second had pushed him to his limits against a powerful boss and its army. Both trials had been meticulously designed to test his mettle and expand his understanding of combat.
"I was too hasty," he muttered, reflecting on his choices. The trials had offered valuable lessons about patience and strategy, but he felt the weight of his pride pressing down on him. Yet, there was no need to abandon the journey entirely. This was a virtual world, after all—one where danger was merely a simulation. He could explore the next floor, catch a glimpse of what awaited him, and then withdraw to recover.
Steeling himself, Kosu turned toward the gate that lay behind the remnants of the alpha rabbit, ready to step into the mysteries of the third floor.
As he crossed the threshold, he was met with an unsettling atmosphere. The air was thick with a dark, eerie presence, and a notification popped up:
Mission: Find the way to advance to the next floor.
Kosu felt a flicker of disappointment. He had steeled himself for more powerful enemies, yet this floor seemed devoid of any immediate threats. "What kind of trial is this?" he mumbled, shaking his head. With a wary breath, he pushed open the door, revealing an endless corridor lined with mirrors that stretched into the darkness.
His stomach churned at the sight. He had always despised mirror houses, the way they distorted reality and played tricks on the mind. This corridor was a manifestation of his childhood fears, the mirrors reflecting not just his image but a multitude of versions of himself, each one seemingly mocking his doubts.
"I don't like this at all," Kosu muttered, stepping into the corridor with trepidation. As he moved forward, the atmosphere shifted, and he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
Just as he was about to dismiss his unease, the ground beneath him trembled, and a trap activated. Without warning, a massive steel ball descended from above, its shadow swallowing him whole.
"No!" Kosu shouted, but it was too late. The ball crashed down, the force of it overwhelming his remaining health. Pain surged through him, and in an instant, he felt himself dissolving into shimmering program bits, the world around him fading into darkness.
As he was forcefully ejected from the Tower of Challenges, a sense of bewilderment washed over him. The lessons learned, the battles fought, all dissolved in an instant. But even as he was pulled from the virtual realm, Kosu understood that this was not an end, but a beginning.
"Next time," he whispered to himself, determination igniting within him, "I'll be better prepared."
As Kosu regained his bearings, the avatar of K materialized before him, a shimmering figure that exuded both authority and warmth. "Follow me," K said, gesturing toward a tranquil space where they could talk privately.
Once they arrived in a serene environment, K turned to Kosu with a calm demeanor. "I am Khamush, the partner who supports Jinpei in creating the virtual world of Dungeon of Earth."
Kosu's curiosity piqued. "Khamush? I've heard Jinpei mention you before."
Khamush nodded, his expression serious. "A few months ago, Jinpei reached out to me with a request. He wanted to implement the latest patch for the virtual world, one that would introduce the Tower of Challenges."
Kosu's heart raced at the mention of the tower. "He wanted me to try it first, didn't he?"
Khamush smiled knowingly. "Yes. Jinpei believed in your potential and wanted you to be the first to experience this new feature."
With a wave of his hand, Khamush summoned a holographic screen, displaying a video call between him and Jinpei. Kosu leaned in, eager to hear what Jinpei had to say.
The video played, and Kosu leaned closer, eager to hear Jinpei's voice once more.
"Hey, Khamush," Jinpei began, his expression serious yet determined. "I want to initiate the update for the Virtual World. This patch will introduce the Tower of Challenges, and I'd like Kosu to be the first to try it out."
Kosu's heart swelled with gratitude. Jinpei believed in him, even when he felt unsure of himself. The video continued, showing Jinpei's passionate plea.
"I think this feature can help shape Kosu into a stronger adventurer. He's got potential, but he needs to be tested. The trials will push him, but I believe he can rise to the occasion." Jinpei's voice held a conviction that resonated deeply with Kosu.
At the end of the call, Jinpei turned serious, his eyes earnest. "Hi Kosu, I'm sorry for leaving so suddenly. I want to let you know that I'm still safe and sound. The problem with the Magicule inside me has subsided, and I've found a way to control the power of Drake now. However, I think I've become involved in something far more dangerous than dungeon exploring. So until I finish my business here, I won't be able to return. I hope you team up with the guild and continue your mission. The day we can meet again will come soon."
The message hung in the air, and Kosu felt a mix of emotions—relief that Jinpei was safe, but concern for the dangers he faced.
Khamush's voice brought him back to the present. "Jinpei believes in you, Kosu. He sees the potential that you may not yet recognize in yourself. The Tower of Challenges is not just a test; it is a stepping stone toward your growth."
Kosu took a deep breath, determination igniting within him. "I won't let him down. I'll continue to grow stronger, and when Jinpei returns, I want to be ready."
Khamush nodded approvingly. "That's the spirit. Remember, every trial is an opportunity to learn and improve. But for now, you must recuperate and prepare for what lies ahead."
With a newfound sense of purpose, Kosu felt ready to face the challenges of the Virtual World once more. He was not just an adventurer; he was a warrior in the making, and he would rise to the occasion.
