Character Arc: Bridget Sweeney was born in Denver, Colorado to Irish immigrants. In America, she faced discrimination for her Irish heritage and did not have many friends other than her relatives and friends in Ireland. No one she knew or was related to was in the military, but when she was in high school, she decided to study military history because she was mortified by war and wanted to know how it started. She had the intention of de-escelating conflicts and preventing wars, which led to her interest in becoming a military historian.
Bridget’s mother, a retired biochemist named Caoimhe Fay, encouraged Bridget in pursuing a career as a historian. However, Bridget’s father, a medical doctor named Liam Sweeney, thought that Bridget would be better off pursuing something in a different field. Bridget and Liam had a strained relationship because of her career choice, even after she accepted a scholarship to university at nineteen years old.
While pursuing her military history degree, she read a study by an archaeologist named Daniel Jackson that proposed a theory about aliens in the pyramids of Giza, suggesting that the pyramids were older than they seemed. Many people mocked his theory and he was laughed out of academia for it. Bridget, however, believed it and began to follow his work, though she never referenced it for fear of ruining her career. In the year 1998, she graduated from university one year early, at twenty-three years old, with a doctorate in history, and began teaching history at a university in Colorado while publishing papers on the side.
Due to her work, Bridget was invited in the year 2003 to be a member of a military organization named Stargate Command, which pertained off-world matters. The offer was extended to her in-person by Daniel. Daniel revealed that he worked for SG-1, read her work, and said that Jack ‘O’ Neal, the commanding officer of SG-1 (an elite United States Air Force special operations team who protected Earth from off-world threats), would like to have her working at the command center. When she asked why Jack did not come in-person, Daniel told her that he wanted to meet her in-person to compliment her on her work. She considered the offer for no more than a few days and sent an acceptance letter to Jack along with her resume for good measure. Jack interviewed her and she was accepted into the program on the spot. She quit her job as a professor and became a member of Stargate Command, though she struggled to fit in with everyone there.
During her time at Stargate Command, Bridget proved to be useful in developing war strategies against the evil alien race, the Goa'uld, due to her knowledge in ancient military tactics. Bridget developed a crush on Daniel and the feeling was mutual. They became closer after he opened up about his strained relationship with his father and wife’s death, and she opened up about her strained relationship with her father. She also developed a close friendship with Samantha Carter, who was an astrophysicist for SG-1, and proved her loyalty to the team when she risked her life to save Samantha when the Goa’uld attacked Stargate Command. Bridget was invited to be a member of SG-1 after her heroic actions, an offer which she eagerly accepted.
Daniel asked Bridget out on a date shortly she joined SG-1. The date went well and they developed a romantic relationship, making time for romantic randevus while keeping their relationship on the down-low during missions. Around this time, an Air Force Lieutenant named Cameron Mitchell saved SG-1, including Bridget, during a fight with Anubis. She visited him in the hospital, but they lost touch afterward. A pivotal moment in Bridget and Daniel's relationship came when he asked her to move in with him and she accepted. At this point, they were practically married. However, rumors began to circulate among other workers that she only became a member of SG-1 because Daniel was interested in her. This put a strain on their relationship, but it was not the reason why they ultimately broke up. Though they wanted to be together, they decided to put work over their feelings and agreed to just be friends. This happened shortly before SG-1 disbanded and after the death of Janet Fraiser, a doctor for SG-1 who Bridget had grown to see as an aunt.
While everyone else left, Bridget decided to stay with SG-1. She also kept in touch with Samantha, Daniel, Jack, and a Jaffa named Teal’c, who was also a member of SG-1.
Following the breakup of the team and Jack’s retirement, Liam passed away due to a heart attack, leaving Bridget devastated. She took several months off from work to live with Caoimhe and considered retiring until she was recruited by air force lieutenant Cameron Mitchell, the new leader of SG-1, to help him re-recruit the retired members of SG-1. Bridget eventually accepted and grew fond of Cameron when he risked his life to save SG-1 from the Goa’uld. She spent frequent time with him during his recovery process and developed a close friendship with him that slowly developed into something more. They both eventually realized that they had romantic feelings for each other, but they never acknowledged their feelings explicitly and continued to keep each other at a professional distance. She also eventually became friends with Vala Mal-Doran, an on-off ally to Stargate Command and eventual member of SG-1, despite their initial antagonistic relationship.
In the year 2006, Bridget went a covert mission to Atlantis to do more research on the Ancients (ethereal ascended beings), but she never actually made it there because the gate malfunctioned and sent her to an unknown location. SG-1 planned to rescue her, but when Cameron realized that it would take a few days to formulate a plan, he went to help her alone. He eventually found her and they spent several days together, trying to survive. During this time, Bridget learned about Cameron’s past mistakes and regrets when it came to civilian casualties in war. He opened up to her and she helped him ease his guilt. SG-1 was finally able to send in another rescue team to help them shortly after.
In the same year, several SG-1 teams arrived at Stargate Command, leading the ‘real’ team to realize that each of the teams had been displaced from different alternate realities. In one of the alternate realities, Bridget and Daniel were amicably divorced, and Janet was alive. An alternate version of Liam was also a scientist who worked side-by-side with Bridget at Stargate Command and was alive. In another reality, Bridget was dead, and the Cameron from her universe who was in love with her was freshly grieving her death. Bridget’s conversation with this alternate Cameron led her to reconsider her feelings for the Cameron in her universe. The events were ultimately revealed to be a plan by the SG-1 team that arrived first to steal Atlantis' ZPM to save their own Earth, but the 'real' SG-1 foiled them and sent everyone home.
In the year 2006, Bridget actually went to Atlantis and met the team there. She got along well with most of them and they all became friends.
In the year 2008, SG-1 was made aware of the existence of the Ori, ascended beings who tried to force people into converting to their religion. Caoimhe was approached by the Ori, but was saved by Bridget with backup from SG-1. Due to Bridget’s convincing, Caoimhe agreed to be brought to Stargate Command and put under military protection until further notice. While Caoimhe was at Stargate Command, she realized that Bridget and Cameron had feelings for each other and jumped at every opportunity to subtly set them up. Bridget and Cameron noticed this and were polite about it, but they never really responded to it.
In the year 2009, while SG-1 was traveling on the Earth ship Odyssey to the Asgard home world, the Asgard people alerted SG-1 that the Asgard were dangerously close to extinction after millennia of genetic manipulation. When Ori warships attacked, the Asgard race went extinct as a result of the planet Orilla's massive explosions, which eventually blew up altogether. The Ori shot a final energy beam at the ship after Odyssey beamed the majority of its people down and used a Stargate to flee to the next planet. To give SG-1 and General Hank Landry time to come up with a defense, Samantha (who had become a Lieutenant-Colonel) created a confined time dilation field that made time appear to be frozen outside the area.
During the initial months on board, Bridget grew panicked about losing time with Caoimhe. Through her grief, Bridget found comfort in her friendship with Cameron and admitted that she regretted not being closer with her father. Over the next few years, Bridget and Cameron came clean about their feelings and began a romantic relationship that lasted throughout the next fifty years when they were trapped on board. Shortly after, Samantha managed to reverse time in a limited field, but the Odyssey's power supply (ZPM) was nearly exhausted from sustaining the time dilation field for that long. According to Cameron, the energy needed to turn back time was found in the Ori energy beam's power. However, in order to complete the procedure, they needed to choose one individual to exist outside of the time reversal; this individual would continue to live at their old age, while everyone else would return to their previous state fifty years ago, losing all recollection of those fifty years. As a Jaffa with a significantly longer lifetime than the other crew members, Teal'c offered to stay behind and carry out the rescue while being shielded in a different field. Odyssey left before it was destroyed, saving SG-1 and the Asgard legacy.
After everyone returned to the current time and the rescue happened, Bridget instinctively called Caoimhe to check on her. Caoimhe was alive and well. Back at Stargate Command, Teal'c refused to reveal any of the events on the ship, while SG-1 contemplated Teal'c's joking words of wisdom in the gateroom. Hank wished the team God-speed and SG-1 stepped through the gate on their next mission. Months later, Bridget visited the college where she used to teach at, only to discover that one of her former students had a recent run-in with an Ori and that their father, who was a high-ranking government official, was taken hostage. She relayed the information to SG-1 and joined them on a mission to rescue her student’s father, who was a high-ranking government official, and find a box they thought held the Ark of Truth while excavating on the planet Dakara, but Ori warriors under Vala’s former lover, Tomin, arrived before they could open it. The box turned out to be a fake when Daniel deceived them into opening it. Cameron killed the Prior whose powers were being inhibited by the Anti-Prior device when Tomin refused to kill them when he was commanded to do so by a Prior. He then helped Bridget rescue her student’s father. The Ori troops, shocked at the death of their Prior, surrendered, and Tomin returned to Earth with SG-1, temporarily staying at the SGC.
Bridget was wounded while saving her student’s father and placed under intensive care, leading Cameron to admit that he was in love with her. She said that she felt the same, but they agreed just be friends so as not to complicate their professional relationship. This, however, proved to be extremely difficult for them and they attempted to maintain a less personal relationship. Months later, Bridget and Cameron agreed to enter into an official romantic relationship. A few days later, they announced their relationship status to Caoimhe, who responded with an ecstatic, “I knew it!”
