Legacy: Chapter 31

Just as they had promised, Haley and Michelle knocked on the front door of the Solo house at precisely seven that evening. In the three hours after training, Hope had gotten down on her hands and knees and had scrubbed the entire house, all the dishes and the dust particles so viciously that it was raw in its cleanness.

She hadn't gotten a wink of sleep, and even though exhaustion haunted her in every step she took towards the door, there was a feeling of satisfaction that followed her. Hope opened the front door with a grin and Haley and Michelle came into view, Haley with a pleasant smile and Michelle with a slightly less obvious one, but a smile nevertheless.

"Ready?" Haley asked, shrugging her purse farther onto her shoulder. Hope nodded, slipping her phone into the pocket of her sweatshirt and locking the door behind her.

Hope sat in front passenger seat of the car, since Michelle who was driving, had forced Haley to reside in the back. Needless to say, Haley was not the happiest, irritated comments spewing from the backseat.

The restaurant Haley had reserved for that night was called Harrod's, and was a pretty nice Italian place. One of a kind mini chandeliers hung from the painted ceiling, and the smell of homemade pasta and fresh garlic wafted through the air.

The three goalkeepers were seated by a young man with menus. Hope looked around the restaurant, silently observing the clients as Haley and Michelle read their menus.

The place was almost empty, excluding the three and a nearby family of a young couple and four toddlers.

"Hope?" Haley asked, patting her teammate on the shoulder. "Are you with us?"

Hope turned to look at her, blushing when she realized they had been attempting to obtain her attention for about two minutes. "No, I wasn't, but now I am..."

Haley chuckled, but Michelle didn't. "Anyway, I was asking if you're enjoying Seattle so far?" Haley repeated herself, watching as the younger woman sipped the water glass the waiter had just delivered.

"Well, I grew up here..." Hope responded. "Well, technically in Richland, but it's close and I spent most my time in Downton Seattle," she clarified.

"I didn't know you grew up here!" Haley said with a smile. "And you're in New York for school?"

Hope nodded. "Yeah, NYU."

"Do you like it there?" Michelle asked, speaking for the first time since they had sat down.

"It's pretty good... I mean college, not the best, am I right?" Hope joked. "But, I do like it there. I have my best friend, Alex, so she makes it worth it." She paused, struggling to mention her girlfriend.

"Awesome!" Haley beamed. She was definitely that most positive of the three. Lucking, Hope didn't have to worry about talking about Carli because the waiter came over with three steaming bowls of pasta.

They were silent as they ate, and Hope was fairly surprised that was possible for such a chatterbox of Haley. Michelle attempted to steal one of the woman's meatballs, which led to a funny bicker between Haley and Michelle.

Hope watched with laughter, grateful the attention wasn't on her. She felt her phone vibrate in her sweatshirt pocket, slipping it out and seeing she had seven missed calls from Carli. Hope had been having such a good time, it was no wonder she hadn't noticed the buzzing.

"Hope, tell Haley I can have one!" Michelle brought the senior's attention back to the argument and Hope laughed, clicking her phone off.

She ended up forgetting all about her girlfriend's calls.

"Why isn't she picking up?!" Carli whined, falling backwards on her bed. It was almost midnight, but there was no way the mid would be able to fall asleep without contacting Hope.

Next to her, Steph rolled her eyes. "Carlos, chill."

"What if she's hurt? What if she was in a car accident? What if she was raped?! What if–" Carli fretted, only to be interrupted again by her roommate.

"Carli, I'm sure Hope is fine. She's probably just having dinner with her fancy new friends..." Steph said coolly, her voice dripping with saltiness.

Carli frowned and sat up. "Are you jealous?" She questioned, turning to face Steph. Steph shook her head and turned away from her.

"No," she muttered. "Not jealous."

Carli rolled her eyes, collapsing back against her cool pillows. She sighed heavily and pulled her phone back out. She aimlessly scrolled through her camera roll, biting her lip as her eyes caught sight of the numerous selfies and photos of her and Hope.

One photo of brought tears to Carli's eyes, and she turned off her phone immediately. The picture was a selfie and had been taken over the summer, when Hope had visited New Jersey for a week:

Flashback- July

She didn't know about her girlfriend, but Carli was soaked in a layer of sweat. Even with a tank top and short shorts giving breathing room to her tan limbs, the air was deathly hot.

She gulped some water out of her bottle and followed Hope up the trail, watching her girlfriend climb on top of a large boulder.

The soon to be senior stepped over a fallen tree and turned to make sure Carli was behind her. A relaxed smile pulled over her face as she the midfielder grabbed her hand and yanked herself up to Hope's leverage.

The couple had been hiking for a solid two hours. Minnie's Mountain was the total opposite of what it sounded like; the trails were long and steep, complete with massive rocks and roots. It wasn't crowded at all, and the parking lot had been empty besides Carli's car.

The women neared the peak and both smiled as a beam of light glared in from the shortening trees. A sign declaring they had reached the top was perched near the lookout point.

"Wow..." Hope said slowly, taking in the lake and distant mountains in front of her. Carli appeared behind her and wrapped her arms around Hope's waist.

"So pretty..." Carli whispered, ducking under the keeper's arm and letting the woman peck her on the cheek.

Hope placed a hand on Carli's neck and turned the woman to face her. She kissed her lightly and pulled a way, watching the midfielder's amused expression.

"Your eyes are so pretty," Carli mumbled tracing a swirl on Hope's face. "They're pretty, like the water..."
