Legacy: Chapter 46

Time was flying.

It was already the first day of spring break, March 10th. Hope had already returned to Seattle with a heavy heart, for once not looking forward to practicing with her team, the Seattle Reign. It had snowed only the week before, and the ground was toppled with over a foot. Hope trudged through the mountains of white to the car that was waiting to pick her up.

Hope's mom swung open the passenger seat and she stepped inside, smiling at the woman. "Hi Mom," she greeted, as Judy Solo pecked her daughter on the cheek.

"Hi, Honey," Judy beamed, starting to drive away.  "How's college going? How's Carli doing?"

Hope bit her lip softly but forced a grin. She couldn't let her mother know that they had broken up. "She's great! We're all very busy, though," she laughed.

The car veered onto the main road and Hope let out a shaky breath as the vehicle started rattling loudly. The sound of the car covered the noise and the goalkeeper sighed in relief as her mother said and did nothing. They sat in silence for a good five minutes before something; an animal? Hope thought, jumped in front of the car.

Judy Solo let out a shriek and swerved to avoid it. Hope felt herself scream as the car plummeted against the metal rail on the side of the road. Her arm slammed against the door and she heard a crack. Everything stopped at once and Hope looked sideways to her passed out mother. The woman's head hung down and blood dribbled from her temple.

Hope could smell smoke but felt too weak to make any attempt to get out of the car. Her head was pounding and her arm was aching. She leaned against the headrest and closed her crystal colored eyes. She soon drifted off to sleep.

-

When the woman woke up next, she was surrounded by white light and beeping machines.

"She's awake, she's awake!" voices were calling and the clinking of metal against metal came to a halt. Hope blinked a couple of times and shifted under her many layers of sheets. The paper crinkled beneath her and she caught sight of the bright green cast that covered her arm. A sling held her entire arm, shoulder to wrist.

Hope grimaced as a knock sounded on the door and a head popped into the bright room. A lady with brown hair tucked up into a bun and light green scrubs beamed at her. She scribbled something on a clipboard before looking up at Hope and shaking her (good) hand.

"Hello, Ms. Solo," the nurse greeted, her voice gentle.

There was something different about her tone. It was almost... too nice.

"What is it?" Hope asked. She recoiled at the sound of her own voice. It was rough and deep, nothing like it had ever been like before. "Wait, what's the date today?" she asked quickly.

"March 14th," the nurse replied. "Yes, you've been out for four days. Broken arm and a lot of bruises. Mild concussion, too. Nothing  horrible, though. You should recover quickly."

Hope's eyes strayed around the room before landing on a lump that was asleep on the corner sofa. "What the hell is she doing here?" Hope asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.

The nurse smiled lightly. "She was the first contact on listed on your phone, so we called her. She flew in immediately and hasn't left or slept or eaten since." The woman noticed the goalkeeper's confused expression. "Would you like me to leave incase she wakes up?"

Hope nodded, not looking away from the sleeping Carli. She heard the woman leave and the click of the door shutting made Carli's eyes squeeze open. She sat upwards and made eye contact with Hope.

"Hey," Carli greeted simply.

Hope felt her heart rate increase and the monitors she was hooked up to started jittering. "Hey? Hey is all you have to say? What the fuck, babe?!" she hissed, careful to not be too loud. She felt a lump in her throat and tried to swallow it down, but her tears leaked out and she started sobbing. Hope buried her head in her hands as Carli moved over to her and sat on the side of her bed.

"Hope..." she whispered, removing and holding the woman's hands. Sobs racked her body and she leaned into Carli.

"I'm sorry, Car," Hope mumbled softly. "I'm a fucking idiot. I'm stupid, and sad and bad and mad and everything that rhymes with those stupid fucking words..."

Carli let out a watery chuckle. "No, Hope. You're none of those things. You're just drugged."

The goalkeeper shook her head furiously. "No Carli! I'm sorry, I really am! I miss yo- you. A lot."

Carli smiled a little bit. "I miss you too, Hope. I- I had a nightmare the other night... and then I realized that you weren't next to me to calm me down and everything. I want you back. Will you come back to me?"

Hope nodded, another round of sobs overtaking her as she kissed her girlfriend. "I love you, Carli," she muttered before kissing the woman again.

"I love you too, babe."
