It was early November and the mild 10am sun shone brightly in the city of Lagos. Ajay walked out of Almonds and Vanilla bakery, with a box of cake in her hands. The white play suit which she was putting on gave her the glow she desired. It was her man's birthday and even though he was outrightly against any form of celebration, she was determined to surprise him.
She smiled brightly, bringing down her shades that were placed on her short wig to her face to protect her eyes from the bright sun. She entered her car and placed the cake carefully on the passenger's seat before fastening her seat belt and zooming off to Ikorodu where Fejiro lived. Though he never agreed to take her to his house, Ajay had used her connections to figure out where it would be.
The road from the junction close to Fejiro's house was really bad and Ajay found herself gushing at how bad a road could be. There were so many port holes and stones on the rough part. Getting to the street, she couldn't figure out which was Fejiro's as they all looked almost similar to her. She found Yemisi who was playing Ayo with her friends and beckoned on her.
"Aunty good afternoon." Yemisi greeted as got closer to Ajay who was still seated in her car.
"Afternoon dear. Abeg ehh, do you know Oga Fejiro?" Yemisi nodded affirmative in reply, "I am looking for his house. Can you help me?" Yemisi stared at Ajay totally surprised because it was the first time any woman would ever ask to see Fejiro and even more, a woman of a high class.
"Aunty, I'll help you o but its not for free." Yemisi shrugged, stretching her palm towards Ajay. Ajay happily brought out a two hundred naira note and placed it in Yemisi's palm. However, Yemisi didn't bulge. She only stared at the money like it was a useless piece of paper.
"What?" Ajay asked completely stunned. Yemisi's silence was all the answer she needed. Ajay reluctantly dipped her hand into her purse and brought out an extra mint five hundred naira note and placed it in Yemisi's hand. Yemisi gave out a satisfying smile as she tucked the money into one of the pockets of her shabby dress.
"Ehen.... Aunty, na the house be that." Yemisi said pointing at the wooden door just opposite where Ajay stopped her car. She started running away immediately sensing Ajay's upcoming anger.
"Come, this girl......" Ajay yelled in realization that she had been duped of her dearest mint five hundred naira but Yemisi was already long gone before she could even complete one sentence.
"Imagine this girl o." Ajay laughed, almost surprised that even a child of Yemisi's age could do something as silly as that. She shook her head, getting out of her car along with the cake. She made sure to lock her car properly before taking gentle strides toward the building. The road was not so heel-friendly so she walked as carefully as she could.
On getting to the wooden door, she gently knocked twice on the door but she got no reply. She reluctantly pushed the door open and walked inside the apartment only to find a sleeping Efosa lying lazily on the bed. Different questions ran through her mind at that moment. She was trying to place who the weird lady was. Efosa woke up scrunching her nose,
"Abeg, who dey spray this kind perfume wey one block my nose, ehh?" Efosa seemed to recognize the familiar scent as she stared wide-eyed at Ajay. "Osanobua! So na you?"
Ajay looked at her in total disgust, "Excuse me?!"
Efosa immediately stood up from the bed making sure to tie the loose wrapper around her waist properly, "Excuse me too! So na you be the babe wey dey go around town with my husband."
Ajay almost melted in shock, the heart started beating loudly, "W.w.what? Hu..Hu...Husband? Fejiro is married?"
"Madam, is it that you no dey see or na decoration eyes wey dem add for your head? Which kind mumu question be that?" Efosa snarled.
Ajay didn't notice the tears running down from her eyes. She just stared at Efosa totally speechless, the box of cake in her hand almost threatening to fall.
"Madam, as you can see, Jiro get wife." Efosa continued, "Infact, I get belle now as you dey look me so. So if you know wetin dey better for you, carry yourself and your money comot from our lives because if I catch you again, you go no say beans no be rice."
Ajay felt really guilty at that moment so she bowed her head and apologised sincerely, wiping her tears, "Look, I'm really sorry. I honestly didn't know he was married." She handed the box of cake over to Efosa and turned to leave when Fejiro barged into the room, panting heavily like he just finished running a marathon. The atmosphere seemed very tense and he gulped in fear, moving closer to Ajay.
"A.a.aunty, you should have to..to..told me you were coming." Fejiro said awkwardly. Ajay stared at him in disgust, moving further away from him while Efosa rolled her eyes.
"So this is why you never wanted me to visit your home?" Ajay asked, her voice strangely calm, "You are married Fejiro and you decided to deceive me, lie to me and make a fool out of me, right?" Fejiro's eyes darted beween Efosa and Ajay.
"Wh..What?" Fejiro exclaimed in shock, "Ajay, believe me, I'm not......"
"Why are you so shameless? You're still acting oblivious even in front of your wife." Ajay took a long look at him, her heart tearing into pieces as she let the tears in her eyes free.
"You know, I don't even know what I was thinking dating a poverty-stricken fellow like you. I mean, look at you, you are not even my spec, no, you are less than my spec." Fejiro felt his heart shatter into pieces. Life wasn't just fair to him. Just when he started getting happy.... He opened his mouth to defend himself but nothing came out.
"Anyways, I'm sure this is the most perfect birthday you've ever had, seeing as you succeeded in making a big fool out of me. I'll let it slide because its your birthday but you'll be sorry if you ever contact me again. Loose my number and have a wonderful birthday celebration, Mr. Fejiro." Ajay said in a warning tone. She looked at Efosa apologetically one last time before walking out of the house and driving straight home in tears.

Fejiro's anger doubled when he saw Efosa nonchalantly chewing on her gum and she cleaned the nail polish from her finger nails with a razor blade.
"Efosa, I'll ask you this question only once and trust me when I say it will be better for you to give me a straight answer." Efosa looked at Fejiro, terrified at the way his English sounded so good and the anger his voice carried.
"Efosa, what did you tell my girlfriend?" One could see how Fejiro was trying his best to remain calm, but when Efosa remained mute at the question, he almost brought the roof down with his voice, "Answer me! What the fuck did you tell my girlfriend?"
Efosa didn't know when she stood up from the bed, shaking in fear, "Jiro, abeg calm down. Let me explain."
"Then be fucking fast about it!"
Efosa started crying, "Ji..Jiro, you know say I love you well well. I no fit just dey make another woman dey collect you from my hand."
"Miss Efosa Amieghemwen you have not answered my question. What did you tell me girlfriend?" Fejiro asked again in a warning tone, his eyes reddening with anger.
Efosa trembled in fear, trying to stop the wrapper on her waist from falling, "I..I.. Jiro I just tell am say we don marry..... and we...we dey expect our first pikin."
Fejiro grunted loudly in anger, his hands alternating between his forehead and the back of his head like he was about to pull them off. Balling his fist, he forcefully let it come in contact with the wooden door, brutally destroying the long spring that held it in place. he turned to Efosa fuming, "Oya pack your things. Leave my house this fucking minute because if i see you for one more second, I fit kill you."
Efosa placed her two hands on her head, "Hei, Jiro abe......"
"You still dey here abi?" Fejiro help her gather her things which were scattered everywhere in the room and flung them out to the streets one after the other. All Efosa's pleas fell on deaf ears. The last thing he threw out was Efosa herself. He locked the spoilt wooden door immediately after that. Efosa kept on crying and pleading but Fejiro's heart was too broken to even hear them. He recalled Ajays painful words before she left him.
"........ I don't even know what I was thinking dating a poverty-stricken fellow like you. I mean, look at you, you are not even my spec, no, you are less than my spec."
Fejiro only cursed whoever killed his parents. He would've been one of the most suitable bachelors for Ajay. But he was really determined to do well. Why couldn't she just see that he was trying? He immediately recalled that he actually had not told her about his admission yet. He picked up his phone and put a call through to the first person that came to his mind.
"Hello, Aunty Zara, It's Fejiro." Fejiro introduced. He could her Ajay sobbing in the background. His heart fell at that. He would have just told her about Efosa and invited her over. It would have been better. At least she wouldn't have broken up with him.
"Oga Fejiro, can I help you?" Zara fired sharply and Fejiro almost melted on fear.
"Aunty Zara, abeg. Just hear me out. It's not what she thinks, I swear." Fejiro's voice cracked as tears threatened to spill out of his eyes, "Na just help wey I just dey help this Efosa girl o, I swear and it's now as if the good I do is backfiring to me with a bad sharp arrow."
"Oga Fejiro please get to the point." She scolded after listening to him blab for sometime.
"Okay. Aunty Zara, can I see you now? I won't take more than ten minutes of your time."
