"Well.... I won't do you the honours.."
She could see how rapidly his face fell. His heart squeezed in his chest causing his breathing to become ragged. He was rejected. Again.
She raised his face to meet hers with a finger, "I won't do you the honours of becoming your wife yet. I know how long you've waited for me, but I need time to get to know this present Fejiro. Not the oga Fejiro that was my cleaner and a low class citizen, but this perfect Engr. Fejiro, high class and sophisticated."
She showed him the ring that was still in her palm, "Meanwhile, I'll hold unto this and become your girlfriend. I'll wear it whenever I'm ready to become your wife."
Fejiro peered at her face, looking for any sign that she was lying to him and when he found none, he pulled her into bone crushing hug. He wrapped his hands tightly around her, inhaling her mild jasmine scent. She smiled and hugged him back.
"I'll treat you better, Ajay. I'll make you happy, I promise," he assured her, placing a peck on her forehead. He stroked her face as they stared at each other like teenagers that got overwhelmed by the way their heart fluttered at that moment. Fejiro couldn't resist the urge to kiss her and he dipped his head to meet hers when her signature ringtone interrupted. Fejiro groaned.
"I need to get that," Ajay said, pointing backwards where he phone was. He nodded, reluctantly letting her go.
Ajay peered at her phone, it was none other than her pregnant best friend, Zara.
"Hello," Ajay's voice came out cracked and she cleared it. "Hello babes."
"Are you not supposed to be back already? I called your office this morning and your secretary told me that your flight was cancelled."
"What?" She exclaimed, surprised, "I never cancelled it, my flight is by 12pm and it's currently.." She looked at the wall clock hung opposite her and she gasped. "Jesus!"
"I'm sure you're just waking up. It should be past twelve there in Dubai, It's past nine o'clock here in Nigeria."
Her eyes snapped in Fejiro's direction and she glared at him suspiciously. He gave off a guilty smile with his hands up in the air. It just had to be his doing.
"Ahhh, you were enjoying some body contact with Victor last night and then you sharparly cancelled your flight, abi?" Zara teased, Ajay rolled her eyes.
"Iya Ibeji, abeg. It wasn't my doing, I didn't cancel any flight. And besides I was not with Victor last night."
"Ohhh, so you were really with someone?" Zara laughed. "This girl! I thought the olosho in your blood would have come out of your body by now o." Ajay rolled her eyes and laughed. Her best friend would never change. "So who is he?"
She turned back to look at Fejiro who was so focused on whatever he was doing on his Samsung Galaxy fold. He made her heart swell with pride. She never imagined they would meet again in the weirdest way possible. She battled with her inner demons trying to decide whether she should let Zara know or not. She just didn't want anyone to judge her.
"I'll tell you later," She spoke like she was in a hurry to use the toilet.
Zara let out a humourless chuckle, "Sheyy it's not me you're telling that one?"
Ajay gave up, she knew her friend better, "Okay... It's Fejiro."
"Which Fejiro?"
"The Fejiro you know," she replied lazily, adjusting her position to lay her head on Fejiro's thighs. Fejiro glanced at her and a smile warmed his lips.
"Sheyy you dey whine me ni?"
Ajay giggled, "I'm serious."
"It's a lie."
"I'm serious. Should I give him the phone?" Ajay removed the phone from her ear and placed it on loud speaker.
"Jesus! How come? How is he in Dubai right now? Or were you both already seeing each other with my consent?"
Fejiro laughed, "Aunty Zara, good afternoon o."
Zara froze, she was utterly shocked and speechless. He was the only person she knew that pronounce her name in a weird way. Just like he was saying 'Sarah' with the 'z' in front.
"Hello," Fejiro repeated when she remained silent.
"Jesus Christ! Are you guys playing tricks on me or what?"
"Aunty Zara, it's still me o," Fejiro said excitedly.
"It's not still him o. Zara don't listen to this one. Small Oga Fejiro has become a big boy," Ajay interrupted.
"Ahh.. Is he now staying in Dubai or what?"
"This one that has houses everywhere in the world," Ajay snickered and he laughed.
"Aunty Zara, don't mind Ajay. She's just being silly," Ajay smacked his arm, "Ouch! Ajay. You haven't changed your violent ways at all."
Zara laughed, "You don't know anything, abi you have forgotten the slap she gave you in those days."
"Omo.. I've really suffered a lot in the hands of your best friend." Fejiro reminisced the moments when Ajay banged the door in his face, when she threw him out of her car just because he confessed his feelings for her, the day he was daydreaming about her in front of her house and the day she slapped him to prove to Zara that they were not a thing.
"You guys know I'm here, right?" Ajay voiced out.
"Who be this one? Abeg come and be going. You have succeeded in finishing my one thousand naira credit," Zara complained.
"Oya o. Iya Ibeji, I'll call you when I get back."
"No problem. Don't forget you owe me an explanation."
"I hear you ma."
"Aunty Zara, take care of yourself," Fejiro chipped in.
"I will dear," Zara replied, "Bye."
Ajay dropped her phone on the bed and faced Fejiro, frowning "So you cancelled my flight?"
He pulled her cheeks, "No vex, Maami. It's love."

Fejiro and Ajay were in his car on their way to his residence. After making her spend almost a month with him in Dubai, Ajay went back to Abuja where she continued her work. Thanks to Fejiro, she was transferred to work at the headquarters in Lagos two months later. According to him, he couldn't stand being so far away from her.
"I've missed this place," Ajay said, admiring the charming night view as they drove to Fejiro's estate.
Fejiro frowned, "The house your father gifted you is still here, I don't understand why you wanted to stay in Abuja."
"I told you now. I was avoiding you. I just didn't want us to collide anywhere, although you were secretly doing some stalker-ish things."
Fejiro laughed. He had explained everything that happened to Ajay and she wouldn't stop calling him a stalker and teasing him with it. "I am not a stalker, ma'am. I'm just in love with you."
Ajay couldn't help the smile that warmed her face. He was good at taking her off guard with his cheesy lines.
The Ovie-Oyinvwis' mansion was jaw dropping. The land mass alone was too big just for a residential building. It was a two story building that held a mind blowing architectural design. The distance from the electronic gate to the main building alone could take about five minutes drive. It typically looked like a resort. One could comfortably turn one of the fields to a golf course.
"Oh. My. God! What in the Aso rock is this place?" Ajay gasped, taking in the beauty of the building and it's surroundings. It was just like the house of the billionaire president in the movies.
"It's actually bigger than Aso rock," Fejiro shrugged, getting the door of the car for Ajay to get down. The breezed that brushed her skin when she did was magnificent and she spread her arms wide taking in a deep breath. The air smelt wonderful thanks to the numerous scented flowers that were planted all around.
"Oga Fejiro, good evening o," A middle aged man in a brown polo and white trouser greeted, running over to meet Fejiro.
"Thank you, Mr. Samson," he replied, handing the car keys over to the man. "Please take the car to the garage. Tell Martha to bring the things in the booth upstairs"
"No problem oga."
They were welcomed in by elderly woman Fejiro seemed to be fund of. She was dressed in a brown bubu gown and her almost complete gray hair was packed in a bun. It was surprisingly long.
"Mama, Mama!" Fejiro hailed as she approached them, "Mama good evening o. This one you're looking so beautiful this evening, whose husband are you planning to steal?" Fejiro teased, taking her into a brief hug. Ajay stared at the two of them in shock.
Fejiro's mother was supposed to be dead, wasn't she?
Mama laughed, "Jiro, you have started. Me wey don old like this." Ajay smiled. Mama's Igbo tongue interference was prominent.
"Old where? If not for one thing, I would've married you." Ajay stood behind him, observing their whole romantic display, totally amused.
Fejiro finally pulled her close and introduced her, "Mama, meet my wife, the one I've been telling you about. Her name is Aja..... Ouch!" Ajay pinched him hard, laughing nervously. He peered at her in astonishment. She was just too violent.
"Sorry ma. Good evening ma. My name is Amarachi Jessica Okpara. It's a pleasure to meet you," Ajay greeted, slightly bending her her knees.
Mama smiled and gestured at her, "Come here." She engulfed her in a motherly embrace, "You're welcome, my dear."
"Thank you ma."
Mama ushered them in and offered her a seat in the large living room, "Let me get them to set the table. Make yourself comfortable."
"Thank you ma."
"She's so pretty," Mama mouthed to Fejiro before walking off to the kitchen.
He took a seat beside Ajay and frowned, "You pinched me."
"Me? When?" Ajay asked with her signature doe-like eyes.
"I was trying to do some introduction sweetheart and you pinched me. See how red my skin is." He stretched out his hand to show her the affected area.
Ajay laughed at his silliness, "It's so pink baby. It's like your hand is blushing." Fejiro frowned and stretched his hands to grab her but she quickly slipped away and ran to the opposite side of the living room laughing. She saw his defeated look and stuck out her tongue in mockery. That was how a new episode of Tom and Jerry started.
"Babe, if I catch you ehhh... If I hold you..."
"What's going on here," A voice came in, interrupting their moment. Fejiro looked up and hissed.
"Na this mumu boy sef." He turned back to Ajay, "Better jejely coman take your own pinch now o."
Tega looked at the couple completely stunned, "Fejiro, is she not your girlfriend?"
"Yes o. She is that same violent girlfriend of mine." Ajay giggled. "Babe, that's Tega, my cousin."
Ajay smiled offering him a side hug, "Wow, it's really nice to finally meet you. I've heard a whole lot about you."
"Yeah, me too," Tega smiled, "You're very pretty." Ajay blushed taking in Tega's look. He was pretty tall and cute. His very light complexion and curly hair made him look like a half-caste.
"Thank you. You don't look bad yourself."
"Enough of the pleasantries guys. Ajay darling, you know what's up,"
"Jiro noww, I thought you said you loved me," she pouted. Fejiro was not having any of it, he chased her and found her holding onto Tega's suit so dearly, using him as cover.
Tega sighed and moved his eyes from Fejiro to Ajay and back, "Bro, I don't know what this is all about. But I'd appreciate it if you guys stop. Like what the hell man!"
"Guy just leave me and this girl alone first. We never settle finish." Tega gave up on the two lovebirds and went up the stairs to his room. He was just coming back from work.
Fejiro smirked, "Ajay better come let's settle this thing once and for all."
Ajay was already breathing so fast, she was getting tired. She took bold steps towards him, stretching her hands so that he could retaliate. "See my hand, do what you want lemme go and eat," she was frowning this time around.
Fejiro stared at her outstretched hand but he just couldn't retaliate. He knew Ajay, she would not talk to him for another two days if he tries it. Before Ajay couldn't utter another word, he pulled her towards him and then pushed her to the sofa, caging her with his body.
She wasn't expecting that.
She blinked several times trying to understand the situation.
"I've caught you, haven't I?" She opened her mouth to reply but she closed them in realization and tried struggling her way out. Simply put, she just couldn't.
"Get off me!"
"No ma'am."
When she realized there was nothing she could do to free herself, she tried cajoling him.
"My love..." She began in a quiet, romantic tone.
Fejiro laughed, "That's definitely not working on me today."
"My love, please now. I'm sorry." She pushed further.
"Nope. Not working."
She caressed his chin, playing with his beard, "Please baby, pleaseee..." She drawled, pouting her lips.
Fejiro sighed staring at her lips, she was just too cute for his liking. "Okay, on one condition."
"What condition?"
"Kiss me."
"Huh?"
He leaned forward and his lips claimed hers in a slow kiss. She leaned into the kiss, wrapping her hands around his neck. He nibbled on the sensitive flesh of her lower lip, sucking on it with a tenderness that had her squirming in pleasure. His lips left hers and placed light pecks all over her chin before moving to her neck. That was when he noticed the customized silver plated diamond ring hanging as a pendent of a necklace on her neck. Her had never seen her with it since the day he proposed.
He couldn't believe it. He went further to use his hands to touch it, just to confirm whether he was actually seeing clearly. He sat up holding the ring in his hands, staring at it like he was seeing a ghost. Ajay smiled sitting up.
"Babe... A..Ajay...." He was completely lost for words.
"It took you long enough. I've been putting it on since you picked me up from the airport. I didn't wear it on my finger 'cos I thought you'll see it faster this way."
His gaze left the ring and met hers. "Does this mean......"
"Yes, Fejiro. Yes, I'll marry you."
Fejiro yelled in excitement. It got Mama and Tega running over to the sitting room.
"I don't think I heard you clearly. Kindly repeat yourself." Ajay couldn't help but laugh at his excited look.
"I said, I'll marry you. I'll marry you, Jiro," she repeated. He screamed and ran towards Mama, pulling her into a tight hug.
"She said she'll marry me, sheyy you both heard that?" They were so happy for him. He had indeed waited long enough. He rushed back to Ajay and pulled her into a bone crushing hug.
He pulled out the ring and inserted it into her fourth finger. "I love you, Ajay. I swear, I'll make the happiest woman on earth!"
In the midst of the jubilation, Ajay's phone rang. It was her mother.
"Hello, mummy..."
"Amarachukwunna..." She couldn't help the tears that formed in her eyes as she made the statement that she knew would choke her mum with excitement.
"Mummy, I'm getting married..."
