Prologue
Right now, you were supposed to be opening gifts as the snow outside dyed the world white.
Right now, you were running for your life and watching blood dye the world red.
Your tiny legs were carrying you as quickly as they could move, dodging puddles of blood and the slumped bodies of motionless adults around you. Waking up without knowing how you got here was bad enough. Waking up and watching everybody around you die was just the icing on the cake.
'What the hell Santa? It's supposed to be Christmas!' You weren't one to use the name of Santa Claus in vain, but you were sure you had a right to be mad. Even if you wanted to ask someone for help, no one around could help you. You were on your own with no idea what was going on.
"This is a warning! A lethal virus is spreading among you, stupid human beings! I'm afraid this is the end of mankind!"
'Well this just keeps getting better,' you thought sarcastically. You ignored the rest of the drone of the voice over the loudspeaker, deciding that it was probably smarter to run in the opposite direction of the voice.
Bright lights flashed from behind you, when you looked over your shoulder you could see a car flying at you. You dove into one of the alleyways, hearing the scraping of metal as the car rammed right into a brick building. The heart slamming against your ribcage reminded you that this wasn't just a bad dream. This was real.
All the adults were dead and you hadn't seen a single kid around.
'This is bad.' You didn't know where you were. You had no idea how you got here. You had no idea to get home. You had no one you could talk to. And you had no idea what was going on. 'What do I do?'
Just as you were starting to let your pessimistic thoughts run wild, a hand rested on your shoulders. You jerked up, practically slapping the hand off your shoulders.
"I'm sorry!" It was a boy your age, concern in his wide eyes. "Are you ok?" His other arm was full of medicine bottles, and his blue eyes were wide as they peered at you from long golden lashes.
'He looks a lot like Shuu...' His light blue eyes were the most hopeful thing you'd seen since you woke up, his golden blond hair curled ever so slightly at the edges, if you didn't know better then you would have thought he was some sort of angel.
An angel with bloodstains on the sleeves of his jacket.
"Are you?" You stared at his hands with wide eyes, it looked like he had washed the blood off his hands, but his jacket was still covered in it.
"I'm fine..." The medicine bottles in his hands shook. "But, the director... She won't be able to get better even if I bring her the medicine; will she?" The bottles in his arms clattered as they fell to the ground, and some of the pills spilled over the floor. He hung his head slightly and you took a step towards him instinctively. You stopped when you realized you had no idea what you were going to do. Were you going to comfort him when you don't even know what happened?
While you were still debating with yourself, the boy sniffed and looked back up at you.
"H-have you seen another boy our age? He's got black hair and a lot of kids with him." He dropped his hands to the side and his small balled up fists trembled. "They're my family and I've got to protect them." Resolve burned in those blue eyes of his, and you smiled slightly.
You shook your head. "No, but I'm looking for my family too. So we should help each other look," you suggested.
"Right." The boy gave a small nod as he looked at you. "My name is Mikaela Hyakuya. [1]"
"My name is (Name) Sakamaki, but just call me (Name)." [2] With introductions out of the way, the two of you took a second just to recollect yourselves. Car horns and alarms blared all around the two of you, reminding you of the dismal situation you were in.
'I wonder if they're all looking for me like we're playing some big game of Hide-and-Seek or something...' You couldn't help but glance towards the entrance of the alley, hoping that you would see one of the familiar boys running towards you and demanding to know where you had run off to.
"I think we should head towards where that voice was," Mika concluded. You turned your eyes back to him, back to the situation.
"Really?" You scrunched your nose up. "That doesn't seem good..."
"I don't think we have a choice, they said they were going to take care of us, so they probably found my family and took them while I was getting medicine."
You softened slightly at Mikaela's words. 'He would give up a lot for his family...'
"Ok... We can try." Instinctively you took his hand and gave it a little squeeze, as the two of you made your way in the direction that you had just come from.
"LET ME GO! Let me go, you damn assholes!!"
The two of you exchanged a look at the yelling and Mikaela gave a sheepish smile. "I think I just found my family. That was fast, you must be good luck," he joked as he raised your intertwined hands. Yet even as the smile graced his lips, the hand in yours trembled slightly. "Yuu just got here today, and he's stubborn and a little cold, but I can tell he's a good person." The forced smile gradually melted away as he talked about his family, leaving a genuine smile in its place.
"Will you introduce me to your family?" You asked simply with a smile of your own.
Mika blinked in surprise, frowning slightly at you. "What about yours?"
"They'll find me eventually, I know they will," you said without a moment's hesitation. You knew your boys, and those stubborn idiots would never let you down when it mattered. Though you had Mika's dedication to remind you about that.
"All right. Well... You can be part of my family until they find you then!" He declared resolutely, looking so much more mature than any eight-year-old boy should. "Come on, let's go meet my- our- family." He pulled on your hand as the two of you headed towards the direction the yelling had come from.
"Hey!" Mikaela called out as you spotted a group of kids surrounded by two taller adults with hoods.
'But I thought all the adults got sick.'
When the hoods turned you caught a glimpse of fangs and red eyes. You tightened the hold of your hand on Mika's, trembling slightly.
'Vampires. Are they the ones that did all of this?'
At this rate, the entire world was going to be dyed red.
Footnotes:
[1]: Mikaela Hyakuya is given in the English format, (First Name) then (Last Name).
[2]: (Name) Sakamaki: Sakamaki is actually the name of a main vampire family in Diabolik Lovers, which (Name) was raised in. She is not actually biologically related to any of them! It may seem odd for the moment, but it'll be explained soon!
ღ✎Authoress's Noteღ✎: And that there wraps up the prologue! I'm so consumed by feels for Owari no Seraph that it isn't funny. Diabolik Lovers and Vampire Knight just happen to be two other vampire related series that I really enjoy, so I thought of a way to combine them all! Friendly reminder that Rea-Tan is assumed to be near Michaela and Yuuichiro age! She is pretty mature for her age though, which will also be explained more if you stick around! I hope you get a checked out the Info/BOC page, since that explains a bit of what I'm putting into this fanfic.
