Chapter 4 - Emphasis!

The next day, the four were back in the car. This time, Bennett was still driving with Naomi sitting shotgun and Declan and Jordan taking the backseats. As it seems to be from now on, the conversation was on nothing but the girls. Bennett was getting tired of hearing about them, and it must have shown on his face because Naomi, ever the insightful, detected the small changes in his reaction.

"Hey, you alright, Bennett?" She asked him, watching the way his knuckles tightened around the steering wheel as soon as Jordan mentioned the word "wife".

"Nothing, it's nothing,"

"It doesn't seem like nothing," Declan came into the conversation.

Bennett sighed. He didn't want to mention anything to his friends now.

"Aren't you excited? I thought you'd want to know the person you're going to end up with?" Jordan asked.

Again Bennett sighed. He didn't know how to go about telling them what he felt. Truth be told, he was torn. On the one hand, he felt this giddy force in the pit of his stomach every time he anticipated what the future had in store for him. On the other hand, he hit his wife with a table. How's he supposed to mention that to them casually?

Oh yeah, I had previously met Davina at the gang raid on Sunday when she went to meet associates of the Lost Boys, and I hit her with a table - what a terrific meet-cute.

It was eating him up, the guilt, the giddiness- it was over-.

"Bennett, watch out!"

He managed to swerve out of the way of the oncoming car.

Nothing but panic took over everyone in the car. Bennett slammed on the breaks, having the car come to an immediate stop, lurching everyone forward in their seats. They all sat there dazed, considering what had just occurred.

The other car, a familiar white Mercedes, was stationary too, having swerved the other way.

Bennett looked up and into the driver's side of the other car. Shockingly green eyes stared back. He almost flinched, and then realisation dawned on him, on all of them.

Ah shit, not again.

Davina's mind was all over the place, she was still going over last nights events, and it didn't help that Tessa and Arya were arguing over nonsense in the car.

She saw the other car coming, of course, she did. Thinking he would give way, she didn't realise the other driver was just as out of it as her. Both of them had their minds on other things.

You know, just soulmate things.

It was only when Tessa screamed. "Car!" Did Davina snap back into reality and narrowly avoid the collision.

They sat there in shock. Davina felt as if she was okay. The other two were fine, just a little shaken. She then turned to the other car, and sure enough, she was met with startling blue eyes.

It was as if the air was taken out of her all over again.

Bennett.

The boy mirrored her look of shock, but then it seemed to settle into a look of well...nothing. Davina didn't know what to make of his reaction. It seemed like he didn't care for the almost hitting her and her friends as well as his own.

She resisted the urge to glare at him. It was his fault, well, most of it anyway.

Seeing that everyone was seemingly alright, she mirrored his blank look as she reversed her car and left.

The other two picked up on her sour mood and conveniently quietened down.

Getting into almost accidents really does have you driving back in silence with both hands on the steering wheel.

*******

Study hall should be used to study or prep for your first classes, but students usually use it to catch up on the gossip, drama or homework.

Jordan ran into class, almost gasping for air. He just had to find her. He spotted waves of long hair sitting at the front, with their back to him. He took a deep breath, not wanting to sound breathless, hoping he had the right person. He walked up and tapped on them on the shoulder.

Arya turned to face him; apprehension turned into a concerned smile. Jordan's worry faded away, although it was an almost accident, and it certainly wasn't Jordan's fault...not this time anyway. He had to make sure she was alright and didn't hate them for this morning.

"Hey, are you alright," She asked softly, meaning laced in her eyes.

He was melting at her compassion. Not trusting himself to speak, he nodded slowly, not taking his eyes off her once. She breathed out as if she was anticipating a different outcome.

"That's good then. I hope everyone else is alright," She asked, side-eyeing Bennett, whose face was covered as he rested his head on the table.

"Yeah, he's fine," He managed, a slight blush rising from his neck.

Tessa came in and plopped down next to Declan. She leaned back in her chair, watching in amusement as Declan finished some last-minute homework. Since he had his headphones in, he didn't hear her sit down and almost jumped out of his seat when he looked up to see her smiling back at him.

Swallowing the giddy feeling rising in his stomach, he turned to her. "Hey, you alright from this morning?"

She waved him off. "Yeah, not bad. There's nothing like a near-death experience to wake you up in the morning,"

He chuckled at that. So she's an optimist? He could definitely imagine her calming him down in stressful situations. He smiled at the thought of that. Would they work well together?

"How are you guys doing?" She asked in return. He could hear the concern she was trying to hide behind the casualness.

"We're alright. I guess just a little shaken,"

She nodded at this. Declan then asked. "Hey, where's Davina?"

As if on cue, Davina walked into the classroom. She had her bag over one of her shoulders and a book in her left hand. She stopped at the door and scanned the room as if searching for someone. Everyone watched her in anticipation.

She then walked to the front of the class and dropped the book in front of Bennetts tired face. He looked up at her questioningly. She didn't say anything to him, just stared at him until he looked at the book.

Picking it up, he read the title and looked at her pointedly.

"Really?"

It was a driving manual for learners.

She shrugged without a hint of amusement in her eyes.

Bennett narrowed his eyes at her as Dominic let out a low whistle from next to him.

"Are you offering him lessons? If so, I wouldn't mind taking some. With you, that is," Dominic winked at Davina, eyes shining with entertainment.

Bennett snapped his head towards Dominic. They weren't friends, he knew that, but he still felt Dominic wouldn't do that to him... would he?

Davina's attention turned to Dominic. She took in the confident posture, the sense of knowing exactly who he is, she could tell, rejecting him won't really damper his ego.

"Wait your turn," She told him before walking out of the classroom.

"Yes ma'am," Dominic watched her leave, his eyes darting between Bennett and the door.

Bennett wanted to wipe the smug smile off his face. Luckily before Bennett could do or say anything, Dominic turned his attention to Naomi to ask her if she was alright.

Bennett turned his head back towards the door. It seemed like his first impression was just getting worse.

Things couldn't get much worse, could they?

*******

Yes. Yes, they could.

It was them, the three new transfers having lunch with none other than Charlie's Angels.

Jordan's mouth hung wide open as he looked between the girls and the girls. His head did not comprehend what his eyes were telling him. Frowning, he turned away.

Declan glared at the sight in front of him, his hands holding his tray tighter. Scoffing at the scene, he turned away to sit at their usual table.

Naomi's cheery demeanour changed into one of hurt. The hope in her eyes vanished, replaced with sullen indifference. She ate her sandwich, trying to block out the laughter coming from the girl's table.

Bennett came over with his food. He noticed his table's sour mood immediately. Looking around, he spotted the gaggle of girls together. They all watched, wanting to see his reaction, and boy did he give them one- note the sarcasm.

He rolled his eyes and went back to his chicken salad.

"You know, just because we end up with them eventually doesn't mean we have to be with them now," He spoke out, masking his irritation.

"You're just saying that because you almost hit your wife head-on with your car," Jordan bit back.

Bennett stared down at Jordan. He wasn't wrong. He just didn't know how right he was.

He tsked and looked away, chewing his food.

Noami looked down at her lap. "I just didn't think they'd be friends with-"

"Our fake ex-girlfriends?" Declan finished for her, glaring at nothing in particular.

"Yeah,"

"It doesn't matter, Naomi," Bennett looked up at her. He could tell she was looking forward to having some female companionship in the school. He was frustrated he couldn't give her that. He was more frustrated at his so-called wife, even though he knew she didn't know any better.

"You still have us," He gave her a small, encouraging smile.

She held his smile and then shook her head. "Don't worry. I know that." She looked to the others too. "Nothing's going to change."

"Nothing's going to change," Declan reiterated, smiling at her now too.

"Nothing's going to change," Jordan repeated, following suit.

Declan rolled his eyes. "That's what I just said!"

"Yeah, and I was repeating it for emphasis," Jordan countered. "Emphasis!"

The table laughed. They found comfort in one another, knowing they still had each other.

The six girls had just finished their lunch and were walking past the Musketeers table, laughing and talking about whatever girls talk about.

"Hey, Naomi!" Arya caught her eyes. She waved at Naomi and came over to their table. "Boys," She nodded at the rest of the group. The others came up with her.

"We were planning on heading to the mall after school today. Wanna come?" She asked; excitement danced in her eyes, and she waited for Naomi's response.

"Yeah, come, it'll be fun," Tessa said, coming into the conversation. "I promise you Davina won't be driving," She laughed as Davina punched her shoulder.

The Musketeers looked warily at each other. Just before Naomi could politely turn the girls down, Abby shrieked.

"Why are you inviting nerds?"

"Huh?"

Naomi's cheeks flushed. She looked down, playing with the hem of her shirt. No matter how many times this happened to her, it didn't get any less embarrassing.

"That's nerds, Nerdy Naomi," Abby explained like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Yeah, we don't one someone like her coming along with us," Hannah whispered the last part to the girls.

"Let's go," Candice tugged Arya's arm.

The girls didn't move. Confusion was written on their faces as they looked from the Musketeers to the Angels.

Bennett saw his opportunity and took it. "Abby, why don't you explain to the new transfer exactly why you call her Nerdy Naomi?"

Abby's eyes zeroed in on him, and then she lets out a little laugh. "What, we're not obliged to like her, not everyone likes everyone, not everyone is liked,"

"True, but didn't you use to just straight up torment Naomi?' He countered.

Davina, Arya and Tessa's faces registered shock as they looked to the Angel's for confirmation.

"You three think you're some sort of knights in shining armour?" Abby countered. "Did you forget when you dated us just to use us?" She looked at the girls to garner their sympathy.

The girl's shocked faces were now directed at the Musketeers.

Declan cut in. "Why don't you tell them exactly what we were trying to use you for?"

"It was to find out who ran a website bullying Naomi," Jordan explained to the girls.

The girls looked back to the Angel's in disbelief.

"We wouldn't do that," Candice pouted, giving Jordan a quick glare.

The girls stood there shocked, still processing everything they'd learnt in the last thirty seconds. The Angels saw their opportunity and started tugging and pulling the girls away.

Tessa looked up at Bennett, her eyes catching his. He nodded in affirmation. That was all she needed.

Tessa shrugged Hannah off her. "Hannah, there's this thing called personal space,"

Arya put Candice's hand down, which was previously holding her phone in a selfie position. "Candice, if I see your phone in my face again, I'll snap it," she growled the last bit.

The girls protested, not ready to give up another batch of transfers to Naomi and the Musketeers.

"This isn't fair. Naomi's not cool. You don't need people like her when you have us," Abby whined.

"Abby," Davina called out.

"Yeah?"

"Shut up,"

Abby was stunned for a second before regaining herself. She huffed out. "Whatever, have fun with these losers," With that, she and the Angels were off.

"I'm glad we dodged that bullet," Tessa muttered to herself. Arya nodded in agreement.

"We're sorry about that, Naomi," Arya apologised.

"Yeah, we didn't know any better," Tessa continued looking from Bennett to Naomi.

"Sorry," Davina said, meaning it for more than one thing.

Naomi waved them off, nearly on the verge of tears. "Don't worry, guys. They're just horrible people in general."

The girls smiled sadly at her.

"Maybe we'll go another time," Tessa told her.

"Yeah, you seem like you have great friends already," Arya let her know, smiling at the guys.

Naomi looked back, failing to contain her smile. "Yeah, I do."
