Chapter 24 : Awkward
I hear the doorbell ring. I look outside the window. I'm right. It's James. He's giving me a big worried look. Grandma calls me down. "Coming!" I yell as I walk down the stairs. I see James sitting on the couch in the living room. I roll my eyes. He's one person who I really want to avoid right now.
"See who's come to meet you Cal! Why didn't you introduce me to this handsome young man before?" She asks.
My cheeks blush. I feel the warmth. I'm unable to figure out why.
Grandma says, "Okay. I'll leave you both alone for a while or else the turkey will surely get burnt!" And goes into the kitchen.
"James, I was just about to come over to your place and speak to you." I tell James.
"I came here so that I could sort things out with you. Have I done something wrong?" James asks.
"Nope. I have." I say. "I've been wrong in treating you like shit."
"Why are you saying that?" He asks me.
"Cause I'm stupid and I don't even know why you are my friend." I say as I turn to walk away. As I do, I feel James's hand holding mine. It's like electricity is passing through my whole arm. I brush my hand away.
"Please Cal, tell me. I really have to know why you were so cross with me. Why were you ignoring me? I can't handle it anymore. If I did something wrong, I have the right to know! I didn't deserve to be treated this way!" He exclaims. I have never heard James raise his voice this way before. He looks so angry right now.
"I was wrong about you. You are a good guy. I'm the one who's selfish. I didn't even think about my sister and I left her all alone." I say.
"That doesn't make any sense. You have a sister?" James says.
"Well, actually I was referring to Evanthia. Though I don't have a sibling, she's like one to me. Look, Evanthia betrayed me. Okay, I thought she betrayed me. Now, I know that I was wrong and due to our differences, I've behaved terribly with you. You must hate me by now." I say.
"That still doesn't make any sense. Why should I be hating you?" He asks.
"Oh my god! Are you kidding me? I never knew that you were such a dweeb. I thought that you liked her. But I used to like.." I say.
"You used to like whom?" James asks.
"Um..um...you." I mumble.
"Me? Callidora Flinn likes me?" James asks. He surely is shocked.
"Wait. And you thought that I liked Evanthia? That's why you weren't talking to me properly?" He asks.
I nod my head.
"I don't like her, Callidora. I like you." He says. I can't feel my ears anymore. I see him blush.
"Aw. So romantic!" I hear violet's voice. I glare at her and Fleur puts her hand on her mouth.
"Wait, who said that?" James says looking everywhere, even right through Violet. So, he actually can't see her. I think.
"Um.um.. I said that." I cover up.
"But that didn't seem like your voice." He says.
"I still can't believe that you like me. That's why my voice is actually getting weird." I say, coughing and imitating Violet's voice.
"But Eva told me that you liked her." I say.
"No ways. She's a good girl. But I've always liked you. Maybe she had a misconception. She would have thought that I looked at her when I actually looked at you. Mistakes happen. It's alright." He says.
"You used to look at me?" I ask. I feel kind of awkward now.
"Yes. I mean you're beautiful." He says.
"Thanks. You aren't bad yourself." I compliment him back.
"So are we okay now?" He asks.
"Yes. Yes we are." I say.
"Will you grab a coffee with me sometime?" He asks as he holds my hand.
"Okay. But once I come back with Evanthia." I say. I can't stop smiling. My jaws are hurting but I just can't stop.
"Cool. I gotta go now. I have to pick Lucy up from her ballet class." James says still confused with my previous comment.
"See you later." I say as he opens the door to go.
I run up to my room and shriek out of joy. It's the first time this us happening to me. In New York, I never met someone I'd ever be interested in. Finally something good is happening with me in California. I go back down to eat my supper.
All the three of them are overwhelmed and also satisfied with today's supper and also after teasing me with James. Later, I take them to my room. "I have never tasted such good long wiggly thing before!" Violet exclaimed.
"It's called spegetti, I told you that during supper." I say.
"Oh sorry. I forgot!" Violet apologizes.
"Your room is lovely! What is this thing that is surrounding this picture? Is that you as a baby?" Violet asks.
I look at the family picture and reply "That is called a frame. You put the picture inside it so that it remains clean and safe. And that is me. We took that picture in New York. That is the Statue of Liberty." I point at the statue in the picture.
"What is this thing?" I hear Luke's voice and I turn back only to see him jumping on my laptop. "Stop it! Get down right now or else it will break!" I run, hold him and put him down gently. Violet and Luke look all around my room and fancy each corner of it.
"Fleur, do you think that we can make all this in Bellendis? Oh how wonderful that will be! Every Bellendian will love it!" Violet tells Fleur, who is simply looking outside the window pane.
"Are you seriously kidding me? Violet is immature but I didn't expect this from you, Luke! We haven't come here to fancy all this. Am I the only one who is actually worried about my city? Am I the only one who wants to take revenge? Can we all please think of a plan and get out of here? We don't have much time." Fleur says, tears filled in her eyes.
Grandma comes, puts her hand over Fleur's shoulders and says, "I have one. Don't worry. We won't leave him this time."
"I'm sorry Fleur." Violets says.
"I'm sorry too." Luke adds.
All of us sit together. Mom and dad join us too. We discuss about everything that had ever happened in Bellendis. We discuss about what we ought to do now. Everyone is thinking about an idea. Suddenly a thought arises in my mind. "Why don't we use something from this world and use it to defeat Alaric in the other world?"
"What can we use?" Luke asks.
"New weapons, new clothes, new music! We'll fight this war our way." I say.
"How will all these things help? We have to fight him, not buy gifts for him!" Fleur says.
"We will fight, Fleur. We need to save Evanthia too. But for that we have to get into the castle. We will need to get him distracted for that. Only things from this world will facinate him and his daughters. They would have never seen these type of clothes and weapons, or even heard of a thing like music. This will let us in the castle and find us time to look for Evanthia. After that we shall let our soldiers inside and attack him, finishing him once and for all." I say.
"I agree with Cal. But it won't be easy at all. Alaric has increased the number of guards after he faced the last attack. He's become more careful and alert. He's also put an invisible protection around the castle. No outsider can enter it until the permission is granted otherwise that poor Bellendian will surely get electrocuted. Few of our soldiers died in that attempt." Luke says.
"So how can we get in? There must be another way." I ask.
"You can enter it Callidora. Only you." Grandma says.
"What? But why? How's that even possible?" I ask.
"You and Evanthia are the princesses. That magic castle has once been your home. It will never deceive you. You will have to chant a spell before stepping in. Only then it will recognize you and may obey you by letting your friends inside too. I'll let you know the spell before you leave. After so many years, I've seemed to have forgotten it." Grandma says.
