Heartbeat
"Guys, I just talked to my dad, who just talked to Jackson and I've got really terrible, horrible, very, very bad news." Stiles said running into the classroom, taking the spot beside Will and behind Scott. "Dude, I think we already know." Will whispered, pointing to the person sitting in front of him.
None other than Isaac Lahey sat in front of Will, a big smirk on his face.
Stephanie walked into the classroom from the front, her head down at the papers in her hands. She spent all night searching up anything that could tell her what a kanay is and what it does.
Stiles cleared his throat, making Stephanie finally look up and see who was in class. Stephanie's eyes grew wide. Isaac looked up at the sound of a fast heartbeat in front of him and sent a charming smile to Stephanie, giving her a small wave with it.
Stephanie gave him a tight lipped smile before scrambling into the seat in front of him, keeping her eyes on the article she printed and tried to ignore who was behind her.
...
"All right, I only found one thing online called the kanima. It's a werejaguar from South America that goes after murderers." Stiles explained as they left the classroom. Stephanie chuckled, shaking her head. "That thing was not a jaguar."
"Yeah, and I'm not exactly a murderer." Stiles shot at her.
"Yeah, but you did see it kill somebody, which is probably why it tried to kill you. And it's still trying to kill you, and it probably won't stop until you're dead." Scott said, walking away, leaving Steph, Stiles and Will in the hall, jaws dropped.
"You know, sometimes I really begin to question this friendship." Stiles yelled down the hall before turning to Stephanie. "Did you find anything out about cannedeyes?"
"Kanay's" Stephanie corrected, making Stiles roll his eyes. "Kanay's. Did you find anything about Kanay's?" Stephanie trilled her lips, looking down at all the papers in her hands.
"Kanays are supernatural beings that apparently keep the balance of Earth, whatever the hell that means. They are said to be the first ever supernatural beings to exist. They have the power to control the elements, and telekinesis." Stephanie said and Stiles' jaw dropped.
"And apparently that birthmark on my shoulder is a spider marking. It's almost like a stamp, to let anyone know I'm a kanay. I can learn to control it and send it onto people to take over their minds. It's very interesting actually." Stephanie shrugged out and Stiles stopped walking.
"You're telling me that you have these crazy superpowers and a pet spider as a birthmark and all you have to say is, 'It's very interesting'." Stiles said, mimicking Stephanie. She whacked his arm, pushing the papers into her chest. "Yep! Here, check it out. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get to History."
...
After History, Stephanie walked towards chemistry when Will and Stiles grabbed onto her arms, Scott right beside them. "So, Derek might kill Lydia." Stiles muttered to Stephanie, making Scott groan as the four walked into class.
"Derek is not going to kill her without proof." Scott whispered and Stiles turned his head to him defensively. "All right, so he tests her like he did with Jackson, but when and where?" Stiles asked as Will looked around the room, his eyes growing wide at who walked in. "I think here and now."
Stephanie, Scott and Stiles turned to see who Will was looking at and saw Isaac and Erica walk in, their eyes trained on Lydia's desk. Stephanie didn't even give the two betas a chance to move before she ran to the empty chair next to Lydia, Stiles ran right after her, pulling up a chair to be on the other side of Lydia as Will and Scott took the table next to them.
Stephanie slowly turned her head to look behind her as Isaac and Erica took the table behind her, Lydia and Stiles. Isaac turned to Stephanie, sending her a smirk and a small wave, making Stephanie's eyes go wide as she turned back to the front, her heart fluttering in her chest.
"Einstein once said, two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the universe. I myself have encountered infinite stupidity." Mr. Harris said, standing in the aisle between Stiles and Will, patting both of their shoulders. Will gave the teacher a sarcastic smile. "Love you too, Harris." Will sang, giving him finger guns. Mr. Harris rolled his eyes at Will and turned back to the rest of the class. As Mr. Harris looked away, Will flipped him off, giving the back of the teachers head a cheeky smile.
"So to combat the plague of ignorance in my class, you're going to combine efforts through a round of group experiments. Let's see if two heads are indeed better than one. Or in Mr. Stilinski and Mr. Saticoy's case, smaller than one." Mr. Harris said and Will made a strangling motion as he glared at the teacher but when Mr. Harris turned to look at him, Will quickly dropped his hands, giving him an innocent smile.
"Erica, you take the first station. You'll start with..." Almost every boy and a few girls raised their hands, making Mr. Harris groan. "I didn't ask for volunteers. Put your hormonal little hands down. Start with Mr. McCall."
...
Stephanie was partnered first with Stiles, the two silently working as they made glances towards Erica who was partnered with Scott and Isaac who was with Will every once and a while.
When Mr. Harris rang the bell to switch groups, Stephanie went to go to Lydia's table but Scott got their first, making Stephanie sigh in relief, taking the empty table in front of them as she felt someone sit down beside her.
Stephanie slowly turned her head, her eyes going wide at Isaac beside her. Isaac slowly turned to her, sending her a smile that reminded her of him before he turned into a werewolf. Stephanie turned back to the table, working on the assignment. She didn't want to show any reaction even though she knew very well that Isaac could hear her hearts rapid beating in her chest.
"You know, werewolves can hear a persons heartbeat, right?" Isaac asked before leaning down closer to Stephanie, his lips practically touching her ear. "And I can hear your heart practically beating out of your chest, Steph." He whispered in a low voice, making a chill go down Stephanies spine. She slowly turned to face him, not knowing he hadn't moved away. Their noses grazed each other's and Stephanie's breath hitched.
Isaac looked into Stephanie's eyes before they fell to her lips. He quickly looked back up into her eyes, silently hoping she didn't catch that but she did and before either of the teens could do anything, Mr. Harris rang the bell to switch stations.
...
Stephanie ended up with Will as her last partner, the siblings finishing the assignment just before Mr. Harris rang the bell. "Time! If you catalyzed the reaction correctly, you should now be looking at a crystal."
"Now for the part of that last experiment I'm sure you'll all enjoy... you can eat it." Mr. Harris said and Stephanie scooted away from the table. "Not it." Will chuckled, taking the crystal and instantly eating it.
"Lydia!" Scott screamed, making the siblings whip their heads around to see what was happening. Isaac was letting Lydia eat the crystal.
"What?" Lydia asked as if he were crazy. Scott looked around the room, his eyes falling on Steph and Will who just shrugged, not knowing what to do. Scott slowly shook his head, sitting back down. "N-nothing."
Stephanie watches as Lydia bites into the crystal and she just hopes, as terrible as it sounded, that she became paralyzed.
Nothing happened. Stephanie felt her breathing go uneven as the bell rang and kids started exiting the classroom.
Stiles quickly grabbed Will and Stephanie's arms, tugging the out of the room and into Coach Finstock's office, Scott and Allison right behind them.
"Derek's outside waiting for Lydia." Scott said and Allison spun around to face him. "Waiting to kill her?"
Scott shrugged. "If he thinks she's the Kanima then yes, especially after what happened at the pool."
"It's not her." Stiles grumbled and Will turned around to face him. "Dude, she didn't pass the test. Nothing happened." Stiles shook his head. "It can't be her."
Stephanie let out a breathy laugh, running a hand down her face. "Well, it doesn't really matter because Derek thinks it's her. So we either convince him or we figure out some way to protect her."
"Well, I really don't think he's going to do anything here. Not at school." Scott reasoned. "What about after school?" Allison shot at him, making him sigh.
"What if we can prove that Derek's wrong?" Will asked, leaning against Coach's desk. "By 3:00?" Stiles sassed. "There could be something in the bestiary." Allison tried to reason, only making Stiles' more upset. "Oh, you mean the 900-paged book written in archaic latin that none of us can read? Good luck with that."
Stephanie watched Allison as a smile came on her face as she realized something. "Actually, I think I know someone who can translate it."
Scott sighed, shaking his head. "I can talk to Derek. Maybe convince him to us a chance to prove it's not her. But if anything happens, you guys need to let me handle it, okay?"
Will brows furrowed. "What does that mean?"
Scott turned to Will, giving him an 'are you stupid' look. "Because you guys can't heal like I do." Allison scoffed, getting up to walk to her bag. "I just don't want you getting hurt." Scott called after her.
Stephanie heard a click in Allison's bag before the Argent girl pulled out a crossbow, glaring at Scott. "I can protect myself."
Allison noticed Scott still worried, making her drop her weapon. "What? Did something else happen?"
"I just don't want you getting hurt. Seriously, if anything goes wrong, you call me, okay? I- i don't care if your dad finds out. Call, text, scream, yell, whatever. I'll hear you and I'll find you as fast as I can. We have until 3:00." Scott said, turning to walk out the door when a whiz sound went around the room and Scott spun around, catching an arrow going straight for his head.
Stephanie and Will turned to Stiles who was holding Allison's crossbow. He quickly gave Allison her crossbow back. "Sorry. Sorry. It's a sensitive trigger. Now, I need to take Will and Steph while two do your thing." Stiles grabbed onto the siblings again, pulling them out of the office and into an empty hallway.
Stiles bent down, dumping his back pack and grabbed a pencil case. Stephanie sighed, rolling her eyes. "Stiles, what are we do- OW!" Stephanie yelped when Stiles threw his pencil case at her face.
"What the hell, Stiles!" Stephanie screamed and Stiles shrugged. "We're training, Steph. And we're not stopping until you stop an object from hitting you using your powers." Stiles told her and Stephanie's face scrunched. "Stiles, this is stup- OW! Will!" Stephanie yelped, turning to her brother, who threw a half filled bottle of coca cola at her.
"I hate to say this, but Stiles is right. You gotta learn somehow." Will said, throwing his english notebook at Stephanie. Stiles' brows furrowed as he turned to Will with an offended look, throwing his history book at Steph. "Why did you hate to say that I was right?"
Will turned to Stiles as he threw his pencil case. "That's not the point right now, the point is, Steph needs to learn."
Stiles face fell and his eye brows started to raise. "That pencil case you just threw... I didn't hear it hit the ground." Will and Stiles whipped their heads to face Stephanie whos eyes were bright purple, her hand stuck out and a few feet away from her hand was Will's pencil case, wrapped in purple wisps.
Stephanie slowly brought her hand down, making the pencil case slowly fall as well, hey eyes going back to their usual brown. "Holy shit." Will breathed out as Stiles threw his arms in the air in victory. "You did it!"
Suddenly, the door to the library flew open and Allison and Jackson ran out. "The bells gonna ring soon. We have to get Lydia."
