Chapter 22 : Collateral Damage

Seohyun closed her eyes when she heard thunder. She was sitting on the kitchen at the orphanage after school.

"You okay, Hyunnie?" asked Mother.

Seohyun nodded, "I'm fine."

"You want some toast?" Mother handed Seohyun a plate of toast bread.

"Thanks," Seohyun took the bread.

"I don't see Yoona lately, she didn't come yesterday and I'm guessing she won't come today either?"

Seohyun frowned, "actually I haven't been able to reach her either."

"Did something happen?"

Seohyun shook her head, "I don't know too, Mother."

Mother smiled and patted Seohyun on her head. Seohyun closed her eyes again when she heard another thunder.

"What is wrong with the sky today? It's not even cloudy," she said.

Jessica landed on the prairie behind the gazebo, sloppily. She walked to the gazebo, across the flower garden. Taeyeon was crouching in front of a rose

with her gloves and specs on. Jessica waved at her and Taeyeon nodded back. She went inside the kitchen and she found Yuri was making her ma juice.

This is it.

Jessica touched her wrist, she wore the bracelet Yuri gave her. She confidently came closer and took a deep breath before apologizing.

Yuri turned around and her eyes met Jessica's.

"Ah, you're back. Where were you?" she asked, coldly.

"I, um? nowhere," Jessica stuttered.

Yuri put down her juice glass and leaned to the kitchen counter. "Look, Jessica? I heard from Eeteuk-oppa. You are worried about the orphanage so you

keep going there every day, right?"

Jessica buried her intention to apologize, she hated the tone Yuri was using.

"So what if I am? They are my family, it's only natural that I look after them," Jessica crossed her arms, which Yuri found annoying.

"It's dangerous out there, Jessica. You shouldn't be going out by yourself. What if the organization finds you and?."

"They won't. I can take care of myself."

Yuri chuckled, "no, you can't. You're reckless, you can't even aim."

"What are you saying, Yuri?" Jessica raised her tone.

Yuri took a deep breath, "we are at war here, Jessica. We can't afford to lose you."

Jessica enraged, "cannot afford to lose me?" Jessica walked closer to Yuri, "are you saying that I am your property?"

Yuri didn't say a thing.

"We're at war, huh? So you're using me to win the war?" Jessica stormed out of the kitchen, "thanks a lot, Yuri."

Yuri left dumbfounded alone in the kitchen.

"That's really unlike you, Yuri? What happened?" Taeyeon tied her hair back and leaned on the door frame, looking straight to Yuri.

"Nothing happened."

"I can always read your mind but I prefer you telling me yourself," Taeyeon made a naughty smile.

Yuri sighed, "I just don't want to see her endangered herself anymore, that's it. Going back and forth to the orphanage is dangerous, she's exposing

herself to the organization."

"And all that war crap? You sounded pretty serious."

"We are at war. We are soldiers, we can't afford to be distracted."

"A girl once said to me that our real enemy is Gaea, not the organization. Where is she now?"

Yuri didn't answer the question. She glared at Taeyeon instead.

"Listen, Yuri-ah, I know I'm not supposed to meddle in whatever you are having with Jessica, but I really want to tell you this. You should be true to

your feelings. Stop lying about the war, the organization, and just say what you really want to say. It's time."

"I'm not lying. I just think that she can't go to the orphanage anymore. Too dangerous," Yuri left Taeyeon.

"She's back in Korea," Seunghyun dropped a file folder on Hyoyeon's desk.

"I heard," Hyoyeon massaged her forehead.

"A hundred and two people in the plane and an airport manager were exploded along with the plane," Seunghyun took a seat in front of Hyoyeon's desk.

"What do you want to do?"

"What do you mean what I want to do?" Seunghyun frowned, "Gaea was born here, in Korea, and she's back now. Truthfully, I'm scared."

Hyoyeon leaned back on her chair.

"You read her files, you know what we did to her, you know what we did that got her worked up in the first place."

Hyoyeon read all Gaea's files, she could even tell over the whole files perfectly in a minute if she wanted to. Hyoyeon was one of a few high officers at

the organization that knew what procedure a Gifted must go through when they captured. They were sedated hard so they won't be able to use their

ability, then the organization de-Crhysalized their blood, a painful procedure, it could even cause death.

Hyoyeon believed, however, that every Gifted that brought to facility, were now out in the world again. Cured and living like a normal human.

Sunny knocked on Hyoyeon's office door.

"Yes?"

"I don't know if you want to see this, but do you remember the orphanage where Jung Jessica lived?" asked Sunny.

Hyoyeon nodded.

"The orphanage is burning."

**

Yoona hopped down from her taxi, overpaid the taxi driver and ran to the orphanage. The orphanage was burning. The children were outside, hugging

Mother.

"Mother!" she shouted.

Mother looked to her and cried, "Yoona!"

"I came here as soon as I can. Where's Seohyun?" she asked.

"I don't know, she was still inside when we were running away," Mother wiped her tears, she didn't want to looked weak in front of the children.

Yoona came closer to the burning orphanage. A fire truck stood mighty in front of it, with fire fighters trying to put out the blazing fire.

"Seohyun!" Yoona called out.

Then she saw a fire fighter pulling a girl out of the orphanage. It was Seohyun.

"Seohyun!" Yoona came up to them.

"Unnie!" Seohyun hugged Yoona and fell on her knees.

"What happened? Are you okay? You're not hurt?" Yoona panicked.

"Miss, she inhaled a lot of smokes, we need to get her to hospital!" the fire fighter said.

"It's my house, Unnie," Seohyun cried.

"I know, I know. Calm down, calm down," Yoona rubbed Seohyun's back.

"Miss, we need to take her now," the fire fighter pulled Seohyun's arm.

Yoona nodded and let her go, hesitated, but she gave up. Seohyun almost lost her conscious, but she managed to throw her cell phone to Yoona.

"Call Jessica-unnie? for me? please," she said before she blacked out.

Yoona froze for a while, holding Seohyun's phone in her hand.

"Jessica?"

Yoona battled with her mind. She froze for quite a while before she took her own cell phone. She dialled a number and waited for the other person to

answer.

One dial tone, two dial tones, three dial tones and finally the other line picked up.

"Hello?"

Yoona was having doubts.

"Hello?"

"Um? no. Nothing. Sorry for calling you for nothing, Hyoyeon-unnie."
