CHAPTER ELEVEN
Dory stayed up with Micheal until she could see the starry sky slowly merging into a light blue. Signalling that dawn was quickly approaching. "I think it's time to head in for a bit." Dory whispered, making Micheal nod his head and stand up to head back down the side of the trailer. Dory followed in suit, going down after him. When they were both back on the dirt ground, the woman placed a hand on the teenage boys shoulder and offered him a tiny smile. "You're never alone Micheal - not when I'm around." She told him.
The boy nodded his head, saying a silent thank you before turning and heading back to his trailer. Dory let out a sigh watching him go before turning to go into her own trailer. She stretched out her aching back and closed the door behind her, being greeted by silence and a dark space. The only source of light in the room was an alarm clock that illuminated a red glow. The small thing read 5am making her rub her eyes and head to the small bathroom instead of the bed that her body ached for.
She turned on the light in the small bathroom, squinting her eyes at the light before turning on the shower and letting the water warm up. She walked into the main area before grabbing clean clothes from her dresser, glancing at the radio that was rested on top of it. She knew she should try to contact Raina, make amends with the teenage girl who surely felt abandoned by her. But at the end of the day, she wouldn't know where to start if Raina even responded to her. For weeks after she had left, Dory would talk into the radio hoping the girl would give her the slightest response - but she never did.
The woman huffed and walked back into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her and making her way into the shower soon after. She tried to make her time under the warm water as quick as she could, before stepping out and wrapping a towel around herself. Faintly through the bathroom door she could hear a knock on the trailers door before it opened. "Dory? You in here?" The familiar voice of Jesus rang through the small space.
"Yeah, I'll be out in a few!" She called back, grabbing her fresh clothes and quickly pulling them on. Trying her hardest to ignore the scars on her back from her father. She pulled open the bathroom door, her hair still dripping small water droplets onto her black t-shirt as she tried her best to dry it with a towel. "Early morning?" Dory asked, glancing at the clock and seeing it was just now turning 6am.
"Figured I should be up early since you have to go to the Kingdom today." He replied with a shrug. Dory gave him a small smile before turning on the main light in the trailer allowing him to see her better than what the soft glow from the rising sun provided. "Christ Dory did you even sleep?" The man asked, noticing the dark bags under her eyes. He stepped closer and cupped her face between his hands and inspected the dark circles that resembled something similar to a black eye.
"No I didn't have time." She replied, pushing his hands away from her face and turning around to grab a bottle of water from the small fridge in her kitchenette. "Didn't have time to sleep? You have a big meeting today and you couldn't even spare a few hours to get some rest?" The man asked. Dory leaned her hands against the small counter and sighed.
"No, because Micheal needed me and I won't turn my back on him when I know he needs someone." The woman shot back. "The rest of us need you too Dory. We need you to win over the King, we're dying over here!"
"You don't think I don't know that Jesus? I'm the one who deals with this shit everyday! I'm not the leader here okay, he sits up in his little office everyday and bends over his desk whenever he hears Negan's name! If you want someone to bust their ass everyday, make patrol schedules, take care of watch, train these kids, go on runs for food and make deals with the King to keep us alive - talk to him!" She shouted back. Jesus sighed and looked away from the woman who had turned to face him in her fit of anger. "I am doing the best that I can, okay?" She added in after, her voice much quieter now.
The man nodded his head and sat on the chair in the corner of the room. "I know, I'm sorry. I just need you to take care of yourself sometimes too. You never sleep anymore, you give your rations and meals to others in the camp. There needs to be limit on how far you can go for others." Jesus replied making Dory shake her head. "I can't, not until we can guarantee no one in this camp will have to worry when their next meal is." She told him, stuffing a gun in the back of her pants before gabbing her jacket and machete and making her way towards the door.
"Where are you going now?" Jesus asked, standing up and grabbing her arm to stop her. "To wake up Alexis. If we leave now we can make it there in the next few hours." Jesus nodded his head, not letting go of her arm. "I'll figure out the schedules this week okay? Whatever you need done I'll do it." He promised making her nod her head.
"We need nonperishables and soon. Zachery has a list of places we haven't hit yet, maybe try to get a team together to hit some spots." She told him making him hum in response. "I'll be back tonight." She told him, before walking out the door and leaving him standing in the doorway.
Behind him, he could hear static coming from Dory's radio. Cursing to himself because once again, she forgot to take it with her. Knowing it fell back into her time of never needing one and being alone for months on end. "Dory? Dory it's Glenn." Jesus frowned his eyebrows before walking up to the dresser and taking the device into his hands. "She's out, this is Jesus." He replied to the mysterious voice. After a few seconds, he heard the familiar voice of a teenage girl. "Jesus? Why the hell did Dory radio Rick back and not me?" The girl asked, trying to sound as angry as she could.
"She is an adult last I checked there kiddo." Jesus replied, trying to sniffle his laughter at her tone. Raina sighed. "Glenn and I were planning on coming to see her today, there's a lot we have to talk about." The girl replied to him.
"I would love to help you, but she's booked up today. Got a meeting with an old friend today, won't be back till tonight." The man told her. "We can wait." The girl replied instantly.
"Raina, now isn't a great time okay? Things aren't going too good over here right now. Give her a few days. Maybe try to actually talk to her instead to getting someone else to radio first and see is the coast is clear. She misses you." There was silence on the other end for a moment.
"We'll be there in a few days." The girl said, "Just tell her we're coming."
