CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Dory didn't know where to start once she was reunited with her family. Some faces were missing, and some faces were new. The new people seemed comfortable around her family, and she knew they had gone through hell to be where they are now. Just like her. "Have you been here the entire time?" Rick asked, his arm over Dory's shoulder as she led them towards the large brick building on top of the hill overlooking the small community. She hesitated before shaking her head, "No, a group found me not long after the prison fell. But things didn't work out with them." She finally said, leaving the conversation at that.
"You showed them what it's like to mess with a Dixon huh?" Daryl butted in, taking his sister into his side allowing her to ease into his side. The girl let out a small chuckle, knowing that in the sanctuary she was one of the most respected people there during her stay. "Something like that, yeah." Dory confirmed before opening the door and allowing everyone to pass her. The last person to pass through the doors was Lily.
The two women always had a rocky relationship, but Lily was supposed to be due to have a baby any day now. But Dory saw no baby bump, and there was no child in sight either. "Did you.."
"We did." Lily quickly confirmed the woman's thoughts. Dory gave the shorter woman a tiny smile, before pulling her into a hug. "You probably heard it a million times already, but I'm so sorry - and i'm sorry I wasn't there." Dory whispered, making Lily hold her closer, laughing through the tears welling up in her eyes. "I think Daryl was too focused on finding you than anything for the longest time. It wasn't meant to be." Lily finally said, the two women pulled back from the hug and shared smiles. "I'm happy you're alive." Lily finally said, making Dory shrug her shoulders. "I was born for this world." She admitted.
The two walked through the doors to Barrington house to find everyone standing around in the living room in a large circle. "How did these people find you?" Glenn asked, looking up at a large painting on one of the walls before drawing the attention to Dory. "It was more like, how did I find them?" Dory corrected the man. "You can all sit, couches are meant for sitting on." The woman said, sitting on one of the arm chairs herself. Everyone quickly settled down when a teenage boy came stumbling into the house looking at Dory directly. "Look who decided to join us." Dory greeted with a warm smile. Everyone in the room noticed how Dory's shoulders relaxed, and her face softened when the boy walked into the room. "Everyone meet Micheal Winters, he's my best bud." Dory explained, standing up from her chair and wrapping her arm around Micheals shoulders and ruffling his hair. The boy swatted the woman's hands away before smoothing down his hair quickly. "Alexis and I are going to the berry bushes, I just wanted to let you know." The boy said, looking up to the woman with a large smile.
"You guys know I don't like you going alone." Dory sighed, the boy looked up to her with wide eyes and a large smile. "Fine, but tell Peter at the gates that you're going. He'll keep an eye out." Dory finally caved in, making Micheal smile widely before sprinting out of the house. The woman looked back up to everyone sitting around in the room, everyone looking on in confusion. "Where are his parents?" Maggie asked as Dory settled back down in her chair.
"If the drugs didn't kill them before the world went to shit I'm sure they're long dead by now." Dory said with a sigh, leaning back into the chair and shaking her head. "Some scum parents if you ask me." Dory added on, making eye contact with Daryl and feeling her heart shatter. Micheal reminded her of herself, and Daryl already knew. "But anyways," Dory cleared her throat and cracked her knuckles. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions to ask, so feel free." The woman announced. Everyone looked between each other before Rick cleared his throat and leaned forward in his spot on the couch. "How'd you get here?" He asked her, Dory nodded her head already expecting this to be the first question she was asked.
"After the prison fell, I got cut off by the herd and couldn't make it to the safe place Daryl and I had set up." Dory started with a small sigh. "So I went the other way, and headed for Washington. I figured I would have some good odd's sticking to the tree's and off the roads and tracks so I did. I ended up getting sick along the way and some people from a group found me and brought me the rest of the way out to Washington from wherever I was at the time. They brought me back, helped me get better and when I was ready I kept going. It was a couple days later when I found this place. They were still building the walls when I showed up, so I came in and helped. It's been my home ever since." She told everyone. Glenn looked at her shocked.
"You've been here the whole time?" Glenn asked, making Dory shrug her shoulders. "For the most part yeah. I had scouts go out all the time keeping an eye out for a group of ugly fuckers making their way into Washington. They notified me as soon as they saw you all heading in." She told them, making Daryl shake his head. "Ugly fuckers huh? The only ugly one in the room is you." He shot back, making Dory roll her eyes with a smile.
"Come on, I'll give you guys the grand tour." Dory finally said, standing back up from her chair and heading towards the door. Everyone followed in suit behind the girl, as she made her way outside for a tour of the small community.
"We have some livestock, but it doesn't go that far - not yet at least. We're planning to extend the north wall out, right to the wild berry bushes that Micheal is at right now. We're going to be building a greenhouse over it that will be done before the winter creeps up on our asses again. We have families living out in most of the trailers around here, and our scouts, and runners are all up in the house for more privacy and rest. We have 24 hour watch, always switching out the shifts, but supplies are short here. We're always out on hunts and runs, we're a growing community and if we don't get our shit together people will go hungry this winter." Dory explained, pointing to things and greeting people along the way with smiles.
"You run this place or something?" Daryl asked his sister, realizing just how much the people of Hilltop adored the youngest Dixon. "No, we wish though." Peter said, coming down from his watch shift and punching the girl's shoulder lightly. He wrapped his arm around the girl's shoulders and gave her a large smile. "The old man, Gregory, he's only the leader of this community to keep him from whining. Give us the chance to kick the old fuck out of office and Dory will be running this place in no time." Dory rolled her eyes at the comment when two familiar voices caught her attention.
"Dory look how much we got!" Micheal exclaimed, running up to the girl with a basket full of berries. "Did you save any for the animals there, kid?" Dory joked, grabbing a raspberry out of the basket and popping it into her mouth. "Good job you two, take them up to the ladies in the kitchen and see what they can do with them okay?" Alexis and Micheal both nodded before running up to the house and out of sight.
"So, how do we convince you to give us one of them cows?" Daryl asked, making Dory crack a smile.
