CHAPTER NINE
Dinner with everyone went by too fast for Dory. Before she knew it Alexis had gone back up to her room in Barrington house to relax before her early morning watch swift. Micheal had assisted his Aunt back to their trailer - because she was starting to have trouble getting around on her own now. But Jesus stayed. He stood in front of the small sink in the trailer washing the dishes that were dirted while making dinner. Dory sat in her arm chair, the standing lamp behind her setting a small glow through the trailer as she stared at the small fire in the little wood stove. She was lost in thought listening to Jesus hum a tune to himself as he did one of the few things that still felt normal in this world.
"Wait wait wait. I know you always said it but i didn't think you would actually go through with it." Negan said to the woman who stood in front of him. They were in his office together, Dory was silent, looking down to her hands and letting out a sigh. "Negan, I told you when I got here- after i got better I would leave." The woman finally said.
"For what Dory? To chase a bunch of ghosts? You don't even know if your brother is still alive! So what? You go out there alone and test your limits again? You don't even know where they are if they are alive!" The man shouted out, almost sounding distraught. He looked at the woman, seeing his words still wouldn't sway her into staying in the sanctuary with him and Raina. "You can tell the kid yourself then, because I'm not breaking the news to her that she's losing you for a second time now." Dory gave him a half smile and nodded her head.
"It's not the second time," Dory told him. A small chuckle leaving her lips as she shook her head. "I'll be around, I won't ever be far." the woman finally said after a long silence hung over the two. She reached down and grabbed her bag before making her way to the door. For a moment - a split second she paused with her hand on the door handle. There was a split second where she debated staying here with him crossed her mind. But before she could give into her doubts she pulled the door open - and left him alone.
"Hey space cadet, you there?" Jesus asked, walking up to Dory and bending down in front of her. Dory shook her head, coming back into reality and giving the man a half smile. "Yeah sorry, i'm here." She responded making Jesus chuckle slightly. He brushed her hair out of her face making her give him a half smile and lean into his hand slightly.
"Like I said, I'm heading back to the house now. I gotta check in on Alexis." The man said, making the woman nod her head. "Raina finally radioed you. She's not in the sanctuary. Here." Dory looked down to the black walkie-talkie in the man's hand before taking it from his hand. "I'll see you in the morning." the man finally said, making Dory nod her head and look down to the object in her hand. Jesus kissed the woman's forehead before leaving the small trailer - and left her alone.
Dory debated on if she should try to talk to Raina, knowing full well that the teenage girl still had unresolved feelings about her leaving the sanctuary. Instead, she flipped from the radio channel that she always used to talk to Raina, and landed on a channel she knew someone was always listening to. With the knowledge that her brother was getting close to Washington - or they could even be here already. "H-Hello.. This is Dory Dixon. I-I'm alive."
In the depths of Alexandria, Raina sat on a couch in a living room with Rick and the rest of the group when Rick's walkie-talkie turned to static. "H-Hello.. This is Dory Dixon. I-I'm alive." The voice rang through the meeting the group was having. Leaving an ear deafening silence lingering over the group of people in the living room. Daryl shot up to his feet from his spot beside Lily, and Raina shared a look with Glenn. The only person who knew of her past was Glenn himself - knowing of her life with Negan and he was the only other person to know that Dory was alive. They were just both shocked to hear that Dory would contact Rick first - instead of trying to get back in contact. The teenage girl cursed silently to herself knowing Jesus didn't tell the woman what she had said to him.
Daryl grabbed the walkie-talkie from Rick's hand so fast that no one had time to react. "Dory, Dory, it's Daryl. Can you hear me kid?" there was static on the other end. "Hear ya loud and clear big brother." was Dory's voice, with a broken laugh on the other side of the breaking line. "Where are ya kid? I'm coming." Daryl finally said, grabbing his crossbow from off the floor and pacing around the living room waiting for his little sister to finally give him a response.
Rick stood up and placed his hand on Daryl's shoulder. "Daryl, you can't go anywhere right now. It's late and not safe, better yet you aren't going alone." Daryl shook his head and shrugged Rick's hand off his shoulder. "That's my sister, I'm going to her." Daryl said sternly, his shoulders shaking slightly. The familiar static sounded through the living room, making Daryl's heart rate pick up.
"I'm safe. We will meet soon Daryl. It's not safe right now - there's a lot you don't know about Washington brother."
