CHAPTER THIRTEEN

When Dory and Alexis were back in the Hilltop, the woman allowed a group of people unload the trailer full of goods from the Kingdom. Normally, Dory would stay and help them unload the boxes of foods and patchwork clothes, but today she felt her feet leading her back to her trailer. She knew she needed to sleep, tomorrow would be a big day and she needed to be ready for what was to come her way.

When she was back in the safety of her trailer, she went to throw her jacket onto the pile of clothes that was normally sitting beside her door - to notice it wasn't there. She turned on the main light, to find her trailer was spotless, right down to the glow of candles to let their aroma linger in the building. On her small side table was a folded up note with her name on it. She walked up to it, and sat on her chair grabbing the note and settling down to relax her tense muscles.

"Dory,
I know things have been hard recently. I made a sign up sheet so people can pick the shifts they want for watch... and made new training schedules and found a few men to volunteer to help you a few days a week.
Take care of yourself a little more darling, we need you too.
Paul."

The woman smiled to herself, before looking down to the table and seeing a small pile of papers, all sign up sheets to fill in watch shifts for the next week. At the very bottom of the sheet was written 'in training - Micheal Winters next Wednesday night.' The emotions that overcame the woman was overbearing.

As she overlooked all the papers, seeing schedules for anything she could ever think of - she couldn't fight back her heavy eyes anymore. She brought her legs up underneath her and rested her chin on her arm before letting her eyes finally close, still holding onto the papers that meant so little to anyone else but meant the world to her.

When the moon was high, Jesus had grown concerned due to not seeing the woman since she had gotten back to the Hilltop. So, he walked to her trailer and knocked softly, before pushing open the door and finding her fast asleep in her arm chair. Going around the room, he blew out some of the candles that hadn't gone out on their own. Before walking up to her and bending down in front of the chair. "Dory," he whispered, shaking her shoulder lightly. Slowly, her eyes fluttered open and she squinted at her lights that were still on from her coming back home. "Let's get you into bed sleepy." Jesus said softly, taking the papers out of her hands and guiding her to stand up.

"I'm sorry about our fight." Dory whispered, kicking off her boots and falling into her bed. "Me too," The man whispered back, tugging her blankets up to her shoulders. "I don't like fighting with you." She told him, making Jesus chuckle. "I don't think we've fought before this morning." He told her, sitting on the edge of her bed and running his hands through her hair making her hum in response. "Stay here tonight." Dory muttered, lighting her arm and with it, allowing an opening under the covers to the man.

The man accepted the invitation, kicking off his own boots and shrugging off his jacket before crawling under the covers to join her. "Hey," she hummed. "You didn't turn off the light." The man laughed before standing up once again before turning off the main light and falling back into bed. "Come here," he whispered, lifting his arm for her, allowing Dory to curl up in his side. The woman was fast asleep in mere seconds, Jesus knowing he wasn't tired in the slightest but stayed still so she could get the rest she so deserved.

Slowly, night turned into dawn and like clock work, Dory was up with the sun. Finding Jesus fast asleep on his back, his arm under his head and the other wrapped around her. She smiled to herself, before slowly slipping out of the bed and grabbing a small pot from out of a cupboard and a container of instant coffee. One of the few small luxuries the woman could still afford was hunting down any kind of instant coffee she could find. Quickly, she got to work bowling some water and putting a spoon full of the dried coffee into a mug to make herself a large cup of coffee.

Grabbing her jacket, she shrugged it on before tying up her boots and going outside the trailer. Her coffee in one hand and her radio in the other. She found herself outside, always up before everyone in the camp besides the two men standing watch at the front gates. She sighed, feeling the first rays of sun on her skin before managing to cling to the top of her trailer never slipping a drop from her cup. She sat down on the ledge of the trailer, her legs dangling over the side as she overlooked her community. It was far from perfect, but it was home.

Pressing down on the small button on the side the woman cleared her throat, "Rise and shine Rick." She said into the device. From the other side she received a laugh and a "Good morning Dory." Back from her old friend. "We were trying to get a head start and be there within the next hour or so and surprise you." The man told her making the woman smile.

"You forget me Rick, I don't think I've ever woken up after the sun." She replied, she knew the man was shaking his head with a smile at her comment. "We did our best to be up earlier, but there's someone who was putting up a fight." The man told her, hinting at her son who always struggled waking up in the mornings. "Are they both coming?" Dory asked, wondering what would happen when she got to see Raina for the first time in months.

Her trailer door opened, making Jesus look up and find the woman sitting on top of the building swinging her feet back and forth. He quickly made his way up to join the woman, enjoying her calm presence when she would first wake up. "No, they decided to stay back today." Rick responded sadly. Dory sighed, looking up to the sky trying to hold back her emotions before nodding her head. "That's okay, there's other trips." She said, her voice softer than before.

"I know. We're heading out now. See you soon." Rick said, before it went quiet. "Carl and Raina are staying back today." Dory said, looking up and giving Jesus a tiny smile. The man looked over the heart broken expression on her face before sighing, finally coming to a decision. "I have to go on a run, there's a place a few miles out I want to check quickly." He told her. "I'll be back in two hours, okay?" He asked, holding out his pinky finger making Dory roll her eyes but link her pinky finger around his own. "Two hours." She said sternly making him nod his head. He went to stand, but Dory grabbed his arm to stop him. "Hey, stay safe okay?" She asked, making the man nod his head, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. "Two hours, I promise. If not, send a search party." He replied with a smile, making the woman nod her head.

She sat on the top of her trailer, watching as the man hopped into one of the few cars they had in the Hilltop, and left the community. It wasn't long after that people started slowly leaving their trailers, and make their way out of Barrington house. A few shouting good mornings her way, not accustomed to seeing the woman sitting on the top of her small home with a coffee in hand. "Comin down anytime soon?" A voice called, Dory looked down and found Micheal standing by her trailer with a hand blocking the sun from his eyes. "I could, but the view from up here truly is amazing." She replied, before standing up from her spot and making her way down the ladder with an empty mug. She embraced the boy in a hug before jokingly sniffing the air around her. "Is it just me, or do you smell wet dog?" She asked, noticing the boys wet hair from a morning shower.

"Oh shut up." The boy laughed, pushing her jokingly before following her into her trailer. "I liked what you did with the place." He commented, noticing how it was cleaner than the previous night he was here for dinner. "Watch your mouth there boy." The woman joked before placing her mug in the sink and puttering around the small trailer as Micheal read one of her many books in the trailer. It was a rare occasion where they got to do things like this together, having a calm morning before something similar to a storm would always hit. "You're puttering." Micheal commented, never glancing up from his book. "It's quite annoying." He added in with a smile making the woman huff and sit on her bed. "They'll be here soon, y'know?" The boy said, closing the book and tossing it on the small coffee table.

Before the woman could even respond, there was a car horn honking a few times outside the gate. The woman jumped up and rushed outside her trailer to see an RV pulling through the gates and into the community. Before the vehicle was even stopped, the door had swung open and a man hopped out."Daryl?" The angle vest was enough to give him away. "Daryl !" The woman broke into a sprint, her brother following in suit. She felt like a child on Christmas morning, the excitement of seeing her brother washing over her.

They met in the middle, Daryl almost knocking her off her feet as he wrapped his arms around her. "Holy shit." She whispered, her voice cracking as she wrapped her arms around her brother. "I can't believe you're here, y-you're alive." Daryl said rushed, cradling the back of his sisters head. "Nothing can kill a Dixon." She told him, making the man give her a broken laugh in response. "Fuck, I missed you so much."

"Any room for us in there?" A voice asked, Dory pulled away from her brother, to see her family standing before her. Some faces she didn't know, and some faces missing - but nonetheless they were family. "How's it feel to see a ghost?" The woman asked, wiping her tears but to no use. "Get over here Casper, and say hello to your family." Glenn finally said, being the first to step forward. Dory took the few steps towards him, embracing him in a hug - feeling him squeeze her shoulders that little bit more. "We missed you so much little Dixon."

"Not as much as me, chinaman." She whispered.
