CHAPTER TWELVE
Dory was halfway to the Kingdom, Alexis following behind her on her own horse when the woman reached into her saddle bag for her radio - to find it not there. "Shit." She muttered, looking back to Alexis and seeing hers clipped to her bag. "Let me see your radio kid," Dory said, pulling her horse to a halt until Alexis caught up. "Did you forget yours again?" Alexis asked with a smile making Dory roll her eyes with a smile herself. For the very reason of knowing Dory was prone to leaving her radio in her trailer, Alexis always made sure to have one on her.
Dory took the radio and switched the channel to the only one she knew she could contact her friends with. "Rick? Rick you there?" The woman asked, sitting in the same spot she had stopped in waiting for the man to answer. "I'm here Dory." Rick called back, sounding tired. "Everything okay over there old man?" The woman asked, waiting for his response.
"We had a run in with a group, they knocked down our walls." Rick told her, making Alexis look up to the woman shocked, knowing she would want to drop everything to go help them. "What? Are you guys okay?" Dory's words were rushed, she felt like she couldn't get the words out fast enough. "We're - we'll be okay. Carls recovering now." Rick responded.
Dory climbed off her horse, pacing back and forth on the path she always took to the Kingdom. "What happened to him?" Silence. "Rick, what happened to my - what happened to Carl?" The woman asked again, panic rising in her throat. She should have gone to them when she found out they were in Washington - maybe she could have stopped this. "He got shot, he lost his eye. He's recovering well Dory I promise." Rick informed her, not missing her slip up of wanting to call Carl her son. He knew, he knew how she raised him after he lost Lori.
"Come see me. All of you. There's a lot you need to know about Washington - it's not safe to tell you everything over the radio." She said, rushed and overthinking. "Why isn't it safe?" Dory bit down on the nail of her thumb, she couldn't tell him about Negan. She couldn't take that away from Raina. "It's just not safe, please, all of you. Theres more than enough time to discuss when I see you face to face." The woman pleaded.
"Tomorrow morning?" Rick asked. "Tomorrow morning. Take Old Mill all the way down, it's called the Barrington house you can't miss it." She told him. "We'll be there Dory, all of us."
Dory sighed, looking down to the radio in her hand before handing it back to Alexis. "So, when are you going to talk about them?" The girl asked. "I've known you for how long?" She questioned. "But not once have you said anything more than a few things in passing about any of them." She finished making the woman climb back onto her horse and click her tongue to which the horse responded by slowly setting off of their way again. "Turn the channel on that thing back incase your brother tries to reach us." Dory called to the girl who was yet to move.
Alexis shook her head and followed behind the woman, "Well?" She pushed making Dory huff. "What do you want to know?" Dory asked, looking over her shoulder slightly. Her shirt shifting to show off more of the tattoo that crawled up her neck. "What are they like? How did you get split up from them?" The teenager asked. Dory looked ahead to the trees, remembering the day she got split up from her family.
"Take Lily and get out of here Daryl!"
"We got into some disagreement with another group. He didn't like that we wouldn't hand over the prison we cleared and took over." Dory recalled.
"I'm not leaving you here Dorothy!"
"He came and took down our gates, killed one of the best men I knew. He took a lot from us that day." She continued, Alexis hanging onto every word the woman said. Dory didn't share much about her life prior to showing up at the Hilltop. To a lot of people she was a mystery.
"Save the full names for when we meet up, I'll meet you at the cottage! Just take Lily and save that baby Daryl!"
"When I was trying to get to the safe house my brother and I had set up together when a herd of walkers blocked me off. I had to turn around and head towards Washington instead of where I told Daryl I would go." Dory sighed. "I stayed off the tracks, I knew better than to stay out in the open so I kept to the trees. I was out there for days, no food or water. I was low on amo and didn't have the strength to fight off walkers on my own. Thats when Negans men found me and took me to the Sanctuary." She told the girl who had her mouth hanging open in shock.
"Rick was, or is the leader. He kept us alive, a good man. Glenn, well he was my best friend - if you were ever down he was right there to pick you back up. Maggie, Beth and Hershal they were the closest family I have ever seen in my life. Carl and Raina were always running around keeping Lily on her toes." Dory went on, a ghost of a smile on her face. "We lost a lot of people on our way, and I'm sure they lost even more. But we are a family, and nothing will ever change or get in the way of that."
Dory's meeting with the king took longer than she would have liked it to that day. They went back and forth about rations and what community could spare what in order to trade and keep each other alive. So when Alexis and Dory headed back out on the road to go home, the sun was setting. "Let your brother know we're on our way back." Dory said quietly, making Alexis nod her head and grab her radio and continuously radio her brother until he finally answered. "We're on our way back." Alexis finally informed the man.
"Could have just said that kid." Jesus replied with a laugh. "I know, but we have a big haul coming in with us." She replied, looking at the small trailer that Dory's horse was pulling behind it. "Great, I'll have some people ready to unload it when you're back." He said, before the line went back to static and Alexis clipped it back to her bag.
"So is there anything else I should know before I meet this group in the morning?" Alexis asked making Dory chuckle. "Curiosity killed the cat, Alexis." Dory replied, looking over her shoulder with a smirk. The teenage girl rolled her eyes but remained looking at her until Dory gave in.
"We started off in a quarry, just outside the city..."
