Chapter 14
Alyssa's PoV
Calum was eating his very quickly prepared omelette whilst I sorted Cody out and got him ready for bed. Everything seemed to be in order and a peaceful calm had taken over the flat for the first time today. Since we'd been back, the mood was angry and tense then as Calum came in it changed to fear and anxiety but now everything seemed to be okay and for once, having some company when Cody went to bed was really refreshing and much needed. I headed back into the kitchen and smiled to Calum as he looked up to me, his omelette nearly finished whilst his heavily decorated hot chocolate sat beside him ready to be drunk.
"I hope that was okay. Sorry, I didn't have much." I apologised even though it probably wasn't necessary. Calum let out a laugh and shook his head.
"To be honest, this is the best thing I've had in a while. I'm really not the best chef and tend to eat take always a lot. We're all pretty busy on the-" he cut himself off, quickly glancing away as if he was frustrated with himself. "In our jobs, we are away a lot and it can be hard to eat well." I smiled softly, understanding that whatever job they did was probably very stressful and cooking a whole meal afterwards wouldn't be ideal.
"Well, if you ever want tips on quick, healthy-ish food, I'm your gal!" I said, striking a pose and making him laugh, nearly spitting out the hot chocolate he had just sipped. "Oh gosh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" I grabbed a napkin and handed it to him so he could dab the few drops of hot chocolate from his chin.
"No it's fine." Calum laughed as he put the napkin back down, his eyes shining brightly at me. "And you know what? Cooking lessons would be great. I'd love to finally prove the guys wrong." I nodded confidently.
"Sure thing! We can start now if you want? I still haven't had any dinner and an omelette would be amazing." Calum downed the last of his hot chocolate and put the plate and mug in the sink, rolling up his sleeves as he prepared to cook with me. I showed him how to crack the eggs without making much mess and how to whisk quickly, adding in the vegetables I wanted and putting it in the pan before grating a lot of cheese over it. He watched the pan carefully as the food bubbled, dishing it out and adding a garnish on top.
"Voila!" He said cheerfully, really proud of himself for making his first meal.
"And it looks perfectly cooked. Great job!" I beamed, taking a forkful and eating it delicately. The flavours bounced around on my tastebuds and I smiled with happiness. "Tastes amazing too." Calum let out a cheer and threw his arms round me to hug me, both of us looking at each other for a second before he pulled away awkwardly.
"I'm sorry, I-" he began to apologise but my phone began to buzz, Luke's name flashing up on the screen. We both exchanged glances as I answered it on loudspeaker.
"Hey Luke, it's late, is everything okay?" I asked to a very noisy background.
"Lys?" The meek and high pitched voice of Kira rang through the speaker. Both mine and Calum's faces dropped. I felt sick. Please say everything is okay.
"Kira? What's happened?" I asked quickly, clutching my phone tightly.
"It's daddy. He's acting weird. I took his phone and I could see your name on here so I called you. Can you help him?" Kira sounded slightly scared, though probably more because she had to ask for help than with what was going on.
"Hey Kira, it's Cal. I'm with Lys right now. We're on our way, just stay in your room okay? I've got a key." Calum was beside me in an instant, his tone filled with fake cheer just to make Kira feel better.
"Okay thank you!" She suddenly sounded happier as she hung up, not waiting for us to respond.
"What about Cody?" I quizzed, spinning to face Calum. "My sister is away until-" he held his hand up to stop me talking as he quickly took his phone out and called Ashton.
"Hey bud, I need a favour. Luke's doing something stupid, can you come and get Alyssa and take her to his house? I have a feeling we may need to have Kira sleep over." Within a moment he had agreed and Calum sent his location to Ashton. "I'll stay with Cody, he knows me and I'm meant to be staying over anyway so he won't get upset. Ash will take you." It was my turn to hug him this time. He gracefully accepted before pushing me away and towards the door.
"Thank you." I said quickly as I grabbed my jacket.
"Hey listen if you need to take Kira out of the house then do. He's done this a few times since Olivia passed, I'm not making excuses but he just hasn't learnt to channel his emotions yet. He wouldn't ever do anything bad to her but I'd rather she didn't see him in that light, ya know?" I pressed my lips into a straight line as I nodded, slightly fearful about what I was going to see.
Before long, Ashton pulled up outside and I dived into his car, speeding towards Luke's at an alarming rate. The car ride was silent, Ashton barely even looking over at me and acknowledging my existence.
"I really hope it's not that bad." I said to break the silence, only causing Ashton to glance at me and then away again. I sighed as i noticed his lack of conversation.
"Look, I don't know what I did wrong but I really only want to be friends with Luke. I'm not here to ruin his life as you all seem to think." Ashton's shoulders dropped for a second before he regained his composure. I'd had a great conversation with him when we first met, until I ruined it by saying two out of three.
"Let's discuss this later. Right now, we need to sort out this mess." He said with his eyes on the road, swerving into the road that Luke's house was on and pulling out an identical keycard which let him into the grounds. It wasn't long before we were parked up by the front door and about to walk into the unknown. Once again, though this time in my head, I prayed that what we would find was not that bad and we could fix it easily. Let's hope it'd come true.
