But at least a book will comfort you in a time of need,
Instead of playing games with your mind and emotions.

A book will never make you lie in bed in the middle of the night, crying and wondering "why am I not enough?"...
But it might have you up until the sun peeks above the horizon,
Turning page after page because "I need to know what happens next!"
It is a great conversationalist with all of your friends, and doesn't isolate you when it disagrees with one of them.

It may seem predictable - especially if you have a favorite genre, like romance for instance -
But you can always trust you know what to expect within the pages...
A meet-cute, a conflict, a supportive best friend or two.
Not-so-complicated feelings, a resolution, a kiss, a "Happily-Ever-After".
A cozy read that gives you butterflies every time, especially if you're a hopeless romantic.

I hope my future daughter learns it's okay to be a social butterfly and have crushes, and even date the quarterback.
But if I could go back and tell my younger self anything,
I'd make sure she understands why Mama wanted us to not focus on all of that,
Because for me, it's true that books are better than boys.
