"Aahh!"

The flames of the fire reach out to the pregnant woman as she pushes one last time to bring a new life into the world. Like soothing fingers, they glide over her, soak up her pain, her sweat, her anguish.

"It's a girl." A man, brows silvery and bushy, his skin gray and wilted from years of hiding away from prying eyes, wraps the baby into a blanket and hands it to the mother. With fondness, he strokes the infant's dark shock of hair. "She looks just like him, don't you think, Rikka?"

"She has his eyes for sure." Rikka cradles her daughter closer to her chest to inhale the newborn scent. Heart soaring with both exhilaration and sadness, she presses a kiss on the baby's head.

"What are you gonna call her?"

She purses her lips. A strong name is what the child deserves, but it should also reflect her heritage. A father whose name still leaves most warlocks wince in fear. A mother shunned by a community for an ability they consider evil. "How about Marushka?"

"A combination of both your names. Nice." The sweat tinge of revenge colors the man's chuckle. "Her father might have failed, but this little one will bring the world to its knees."

Starting with those damn wolves, with Kendrick and Raelyn Raynes at the front of the line. "We will have to be very careful. If the Sentinels learn of her birth, they will declare open season on the three of us."

This time, scorn fills the man's laugh. "The new Sentinels are too full of themselves to notice anything. They think because Marush is dead, there are no more threats."

"What they don't realize is that they are the threat." Rikka strokes her daughter's hair. "But you will show them, won't you, Marushka?"

The baby wrinkles her nose, her eyes alert of her surroundings. It tells her mother about the great strength resting within her—like seeds, waiting to be nourished and cared for to unleash a power of unrivalled proportions.

"Two decades, that's all we need until she's ready," the man says.

"And I don't want her to develop her powers before then. Otherwise, it might alert the Sentinels."

"Agreed. We shouldn't make a move until we're ready. One shot, that's all we have at this."

Rikka nods. "And until then, we'll hide among the humans. It's the safest way."
