7: Little green monster
I was trying to call Angie between my morning appointments. Come on best friend, I am seriously loosing my mojo and sanity. I just needed to hear someone else say what I'd been thinking all morning-that I had an awesome job and boyfriend and did not need to be jealous of Jerry Jensen's "fiancé." But I was, I really was. I was going insane just a teeny bit. Her fake plastic voice echoed in my memory.
"So where is your ring?" Lacy said. "Oh no, Benji hasn't proposed yet?"
"We're just dating," I said to her and the reporter. "But we're happy."
"That's great," Lacy said. "I mean, if I'd been on and off again for years, I'd want him to put a ring on it. But that's just me. It so cool that you are still alright with 'hanging out' forever."
I hated her. It was official.
I mean, who gets engaged when they're in their early twenties? No one! So if I was jealous of her sparkly finger, did that mean I was jealous of her and Jerry? Yes, yes it did. But how was that possible, to like two people at once? Angie, please pick up!
"Hello," Angie whispered. I sighed in relief.
"Angie, I need your help. I am in a crisis!" I was being overdramatic, which is probably a side effect of being around all the divas for so long.
"Stephanie, calm down," She whispered again. "I will call you in an hour, I am busy...I'm in a meeting. So maybe you can call Benji or Joel..."
"I need my girlfriend," I said. "Since when do Bloggers have meetings?"
"I will talk to you tonight!" Angie whisper yelled. "I'm sorry, I just... I am busy."
She clicked and I just rolled my eyes. Where was with my best friend lately? With ditching me for Joel last night and her Youtube antics, I didn't know what to expect. I took a deep breathe and repeated my mantra to myself.
"I am not jealous of Lacy and Jerry," I said. "I have Benji and I am happy."
I cleaned a brush and looked in the mirror. My reflection questioning my true feelings.
"I am not jealous!" I said.
I turned around hearing a door open. Sure enough, there was the affable Jerry Jensen. I needed a bell on my door, it was official.
"Who are we not jealous of," Jerry said. I smiled brightly and spun my chair around.
"Demi Levato," I said. "She has great skin, and I am not jealous."
"Ok," Jerry said Andre sat down. I started fixing his hair and began his minimal makeup, not saying anything. He was smiling, as he always did, and I was being stoically professional.
"You're quiet today blue eyes," he said.
I tugged on his hair a bit harder than I needed to. He smirked in response.
"I don't think your fiancé would appreciate my little nickname," I said.
Jerry quirked an eyebrow as if to ask me if I really went there.
"Yeah, well neither would your boyfriend I suppose," Jerry said. "I mean, he didn't appreciate my dance moves either so..."
"Benji is not crazy though," I said. "He doesn't go around punching people, and then getting engaged an hour later."
"I was overwhelmed by her love?" Jerry said, as if he'd rehearsed the line before.
"Bullshit," I said. "I don't believe you."
"Well you know me," Jerry said. "Our agents cooked it up. Our engagement is a publicity stunt, and it ends once we get through with filming and promoting the film."
"The promotion ends in two years," I said. "What about your real love life? And if you're planning on breaking up, why would Lacy agree to it?"
"Remember the "bennifer" thing? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were extremely popular afterwards."
"Whatever. As a friend, I think this is stupid. Jerry, what if you met the love of your life and you're busy playing house with the drama queen?"
"What I do behind closed doors is my business," Jerry said.
"That's disgusting," I retorted. "How can you live your life like that?"
"Look Steph, it doesn't really matter. The only girl I've really liked in years is taken, so whatever. My career is my life, for now."
I just shook my head, not wanting to talk anymore.
"You're ready to go," I said. "Go break a leg, Jerry." He smiled and stood up, looking into my eyes. I'd be lying if I said I didn't blush when he leaned over and tried to steal a kiss. But I pushed on his chest with my hands.
"Space, Jerry," I said. "I love Benji."
"Sure you do," Jerry said. "And you're not jealous."
"Of Demi Levato." I added, knowing he knew the truth.
I was planning on sneaking out early when I heard another knock on the makeup trailer. I opened the door and Heather, the reporter, was there.
"Hey, it's Heather, right?" I asked. She smiled and shook my hand.
"I never mentioned it, but I work for a blog through Vanity Fair"
"Ah," I said. "My friend has a blog. It's pretty popular."
"I know," Heather said. "I write celebrity gossip, so I know all about Joel's girlfriend."
"Right," I said.
She came into the trailer and sat down.
"Even though I write gossip, I have standards. I don't run unconfirmed stories, and I try to be positive. I mean, why slam some poor street when you can post pictures of Kellan Lutz on the beach?"
"I agree," I said. "Is he nice in real life, because I'd be super depressed if he was a jerk."
"I wish I knew," Heather said.
Her smiled faded quickly.
"I am guessing you're not here to become best friends," I said.
She shook her head.
"I like you, so I won't run this story," Heather said. "But I wanted you to see. I have gotten three separate photos texted in, about ten minutes ago." She showed me her phone, and there was a picture of Benji. He was outside of a building, probably the recording studio.
He was hugging some girl, who had long red hair and an affection for eyeliner. Another picture showed him kissing her, though it was unclear whether or not The kiss was on the lips or on the cheek. I felt my stomach bunch up in tiny little knots.
"I need to be alone," I said, feeling tears form over my black eye.
"The last photo was three minutes ago," she said. "The wonder of the Internet, I guess."
"Thanks Heather," I said.
She stood up and left. Before I lost my nerve, I dialed my phone quickly.
"Benji," I said. "Where are you, right now?"
"Hello love," he said. "I'm with Joel, why?"
"Really, with Joel," I said. "is anyone else there?"
"The band, of course," he said. His voice was lowered at the end syllables, like they always did when he lied. God I knew him too well.
"Benji, I need you to tell me honestly," he said. "is there a woman there?"
"No," Benji said. "Why are you freaking out? I am working, I don't have time for this."
"Ok," I said. "We need to talk later. Call me when you're done working."
I hung up and dialed Angie, waiting for her to answer.
"Hello," Joel answered. I was taken aback by his voice.
"Joel," I said. "I thought you were recording. Where are you?"
"I'm with Angie," Joel said. "The studio had a power outage and I had to leave. Angie needed my help...with a work thing."
"So you're not with Benji," I said. "And he's not working right now."
"I don't keep tabs on your boyfriend, but no, we're not working right now." I exhaled.
"Ok, tell Angie she can call when she's done. And tell her I said good luck with her...work thing."
"Love you sis," Joel said. I said it back and hung up. Apparently the only guy I can count on is Joel.
Benji lied to me, about two things. There was a photo of him and some redhead doing something shady. I just felt it all come back to me; the memories of Benji cheating on me. I knew Jerry had been right. I didn't trust Benji, and the one chance he'd been given to earn my trust by being honest-he lied and avoided me.
It was official. I was a train wreck.
