SEVEN. PROMISES

"I hope mom's still here, if not, get ready for," Kendall opened the door to their home, the first thing both Brennan siblings saw was their father standing in the hallway with arms crossed and furrowed eyebrows.

"Why are you late?" His voice was loud and raspy, Destiny hadn't heard this tone from him since she was nine years old and he had punched a kid on his throat after he had stolen her lollipop.

"Good luck." Kendall whispered at the young girl, patting her shoulder a few times before walking away from the battlefield. Destiny took a step forward and was ready to answer but the uprisen palm of her father was clear that she didn't have to speak even though she was asked a question.

"Your mother wanted to see you, it's been years Destiny, and I know you wanted to see her so badly, what changed?" Destiny shrugged, she looked at the wall beside her, she glanced over to look at her dad, his expression was the same since she walked in. "Kendall told me you were at Julie's house and then you went to another house? Who's house and why?"

"Carrie's house dad, we went since tonight we, there's," Destiny sighed "there's a dance in school, and I just made friends and I got invited to go there, Dad." Destiny looked back at her father, his eyes softened, his hands fell down to his hips just like his head bowed down. "I am sorry dad." She whispered, her eyes falling down to look down at the floor. There was a silence that Destiny had imagined it would've happened, but the touch of arms wrapping around her body wasn't something she was expecting.

"I am sorry, I am happy for your new friendships Destiny, I really am," Destiny's dad said, his chin resting down on her head "But, this was supposed to be a big moment between you and your mom, I really hope she comes back tomorrow, or maybe you should call her," Destiny was pulled back and both brown eyes looked at each other, "I think she would love to hear all about your new friend, you could've called me Destiny." The girl sighed and nodded her head, her father gave her a pat on her shoulder and pushed her towards the stairs.

"Dad?" She called out before she could even place a foot on the wooden floor "Could I go tonight to the school party? People are expecting me to take pictures for the Instagram account." Her father nodded his head and promised he would be the one to take her and pick her up.

The night came through, Destiny had changed into a leather jacket and a white strapless dress, the camera swung around her neck, she smiled at her reflection in the mirror and turned her heel to leave the bathroom and make her way to the school gym. Destiny managed to convince her father on letting her come so easily, forget the evening, forget her mother's appearance, forget everything that had just happened a few hours ago. She felt bad about using Julie as her ticket way out, but she didn't lie, Julie, was a new friend, and, Julie needed her, well, it was more that, Flynn needed her for the photography but a fun night was going to happen and Destiny didn't want to miss it.

The gym was filled by students dancing to the music Flynn was playing, Destiny waved at some students who recognized her and greeted her, some of them she didn't even know but she didn't have to be rude. Destiny made her way to the stage and waved to Flynn as she walked up the stairs.

"Thank god you've made it, have you seen the boys?" Flynn asked placing her headphones on the table, the girl pulled the other back.

"No I haven't, why? What happened?" Destiny's eyes furrowed with confusion.

"They aren't here and it's almost time for us to get up there and play." Julie's voice was heard behind them, Destiny turned and saw her in hip hop type of clothing.

"No I haven't seen them, also, you look amazing Julie." Destiny smiled at her, Julie touched her hair and thanked her. "So what's the plan now? I got a sort of curfew?" She didn't mean to say the last thing but she felt like it was important. Both girls nodded their heads and understood, they understood and told her not to worry.

"Well, I better head back to being a DJ because, if I stop they might pull me out or something." Flynn chuckled and walked away back to the music booth. Julie looked at Destiny and headed over to where she had a small box.

"What's that?" Destiny asked, pointing down at the box, Julie chuckled and lifted it up.

"It's the hologram protector, we gotta make it believable, right?" Julie and Destiny chuckled and stared out to the crowd "I don't get it, they know how much this means to me, you can see them Des, but in any way, can you like feel their energy?" She questioned as she looked up, Destiny didn't notice at what moment she had sat down.

"I don't, sorry Julie, also I don't think honestly that's how it works, well, I mean, I haven't even figured out what I'm doing with the guys." Destiny added with a sigh, unsure of it, but the energy idea sounded like a good way to start hand study.

"Well however you're connected to all of this, it can be extremely helpful, now that I know that the guys are connected to Carrie instead of me."

"I think I will be starting with the pictures and when the guys appear I'll come back." Destiny smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to answer to that comment about connections, Julie nodded her head at the brunette who walked away from the stage and headed over to the court, taking photographs of students dancing, and some other students who wanted their pictures taken.

"Destiny, nice to see you." Destiny recognized the voice immediately, she turned around to see Carrie with a smile, a big pink puffy thing around her arms that Destiny wanted to giggle about, but she knew how Carrie had her style.

"Hi, Carrie, what can I do for you?" She asked placing the camera down, letting it fall around her neck.

"I think that after this event, you should come over to my party, I'll be giving you a shoutout on my insta, you know, grow your followers." Carrie tilted her head to the side as she spoke, Destiny just looked at her with her lips pressed together and widened eyes.

"Thanks, Carrie, but I think I'm passing the invite, I got things to do." Destiny said and took a step back and then another until she was far away from Carrie and Nick.

The night kept ongoing and there was no sight from the boys, Destiny started getting worried but she didn't understand why? She barely knew the boys and they weren't her responsibility or issue. Maybe it was more of a worry with Julie, this was a big moment for her, she was going to sing in front of everyone again, and that is a big step.

"Is everyone fired up for Julie and the Phantoms?" Flynn's voice was heard loudly on the microphone, Destiny looked up, her brown eyes searching on the stage for the ghosts but they weren't there. "Great! Keep that fire cause that's later, we're running a bit behind schedule." Destiny sighed and decided to go back on stage and check on Julie.

"Hey, what's happening?" She asked gripping onto her camera, her head tilted to the side, she saw how Julie tried to give her best smile.

"The boys, you haven't seen them anywhere?" Julie asked, she had moved from her sitting spot and was now standing up pacing side to side.

"I haven't, give them ten more minutes Jules, they will be here, they promised." Destiny walked over to her, her hands grabbed into her, and gave them a gentle squeeze. "Do you want me to stay here with you?" Julie nodded her head at her, and Destiny stood by her side.

Music continues to play all over the gym, students kept on dancing and waiting, Julie's face had changed during the course of the night. Destiny looked on her phone and noticed how minutes had changed to hours, the time had passed quickly and the boys hadn't made their appearance.

"I can only stall for so long, it's eleven o'clock." Flynn came over and looked down at both of them "I think you should just play by yourself, I mean holograms or no holograms, you'll be amazing."

"You saw me the other day, I can't play without them, they'll be here, they have to." Julie answered back at her, Destiny looked at her and rested her head on her shoulder. This night was going down for her, for them, Destiny was excited to see Julie play again, she wanted to jump and sing the words to the song, but it seemed plans were changing.

"Issues?" Nick appeared behind them, Julie answered him, he sat down on the opposite side making Julie stay in the middle.

"The machine won't work." Julie tried to make the excuse, Nick was about to check the hologram projector when she stopped him "You don't have to." Nick let it down slowly and grabbed the cord of it trying to find the error of it, only to notice that it wasn't connected, Julie had the end in her hand.

"Here's the problem." Nick being a sweetheart, connected the cord and turned on the projector, letting them know it was working indeed. "That is unless you didn't want it plugged in." The boy stood up and looked down at her.

"I think I should leave you guys alone." Destiny cleared her throat and stood up, taking steps back to the door and checked her phone for any messages either from her brother or father, but there were none, she sighed in relief and placed her phone back inside of her jacket.

"Wait, what." Julie's shout made Destiny turned around, she saw how Nick was walking to the front stage and grab the microphone.

"What is he doing?" She asked looking from Julie to Nick, the girl didn't answer with words but the shrug and scared look on her face were obvious, she didn't know.

"Hey, everybody, we fixed the hologram thing. Who wants to see a show?" Nick said to the mic, all students cheered at the announcement "Now, give it up, for Julie and the Phantoms." Nick shouted out, cheers and claps were followed behind, Flynn looked back at them confused.

Julie walked to the front stage, she was nervous, not because she was going to sing, but for the announcement that Nick just did, he sort of pushed her to the spotlight and there was no one else who could help her get out.

"So, here's the thing," Julie chuckled, she needed to come up with an excuse, and fast. "even though we got the machine fixed, thanks to Nick," She looked down at him, cheers following "I can't seem to link up with the guys, wifi, am I right?" Another chuckle left Julie be heard on the microphone, students didn't chuckle with her, they just looked sad, Destiny was looking from behind the curtains at everything that was going on and all she wanted was to pull Julie away from there. "I'm sorry, but, I'm gonna have to cancel."

The gym was now filled with gasps and students clamoring what, why, groans, and such. It didn't take long for Carrie to appear on stage, Destiny rolled her eyes, she knew she was going to make a mean comment and embarrass Julie, and that is the thing she needed the least right now.

"Anybody knows the Heimlich?" Carrie said out loud before turning "Julie's choking." Laughter was heard around, Destiny walked over to the stage and stood beside Flynn.

"Give me one good reason on why I shouldn't push Carrie off the stage right now?" She whispered at the girl, Flynn grabbed her by the arm and shook her head.

"Believe me, as much as I want to do the same thing right now, it won't be worth it." Flynn sighed and looked at Julie with sad eyes, the two of them made their way next to Julie, support was what she needed and Carrie's comments were just getting worse.

"Who wants to see Dirty Candy?" Carrie said into the mic that she grabbed off Julie's hands, students clapped and cheered in response, her hand going for the switch in the DJ booth for the change of music, but Flynn was quicker and took off the nob. Then things turned for the worst, Carrie invited them to her house to continue this party, letting the mic drop, and looked at the three girls with a death stare before walking away.

The gym court slowly started to clear out, everyone followed Carrie outside and to her home. Julie, Flynn, and Destiny looked at each other and walked off the stage, Flynn with her arm around Julie's shoulder and Destiny's arm interlocked with Flynn's.

"Well, that kind of backfired." Flynn sighed, the three girls noticed how there were two students left, a young boy asking out a girl for a dance "Oh, I mean, the whole night wasn't a bust, the new guy found someone." she said pointing out at the two of them who were making their way to the dance floor. "Little man has game." Flynn said surprised trying to lift up Julie's mood.

"Come on, let's go to the cafeteria for a snack before cleaning up." Destiny suggested and the two of them agreed, leaving the court and heading to the cafeteria, knowing they would have to get something from the vending machine.

"What a night, but, the guys still danced the night away." Julie let out a loud sigh, the numbers were pressed against the vending machine, dropping down a bag of chips.

"If the guys appear tonight, they will be hearing us, they let you down and that's unforgivable Julie, I don't care if they are cute, it's unforgivable. " Flynn repeated her words and grabbed the can of soda she wanted.

"I know you are mad but let's hope the guys are okay, I mean, they are ghosts." Destiny tried to make the situation a bit better but the idea of something happening to them wasn't the best choice.

They all returned back to the gym court and looked around, the three of them looked over at the balloons Flynn had made and decided to start cleaning up there, by popping them. They all sat down on the floor and with a needle or pin, they started to pop them.

"I can never show my face at this school again." Julie said sarcastically, Destiny chuckled but she understood why she was saying this.

"That's what we get for depending on boys." Flynn responded back as she looked at Julie.

"Am not just any boys, ghost boys." Destiny joined in and popped a white balloon.

"I don't know if I should be mad or worried, like Des said, they're ghosts." She looked at Flynn "I don't know what kind of trouble they can get into."

"They could get into trouble? I mean, again, they're ghosts." Destiny asked and looked at both of them. Flynn shrugged and looked at them both too.

"I'mma get us some ice cream from the cafeteria, I know we just came from there but this is necessary." She stood up and turned "We can crash at my place and forget this whole nightmare," Then her eyes fell on Destiny "Wanna join us?" A sleepover? As much as Destiny wanted, she had to reject it.

"Thanks, Flynn, but I have things back home, I also need to let my dad know he should be heading over now, but thanks again for the invite." She smiled and took her phone out, typing the message for her dad. The distant sound of the gym door opening caught the attention of both girls, then there was the voice they wanted to hear.

"Julie, we are ready to rock this dance, which is clearly over." The three boys came running and stopped just in front of them but they haven't noticed the presence of Julie or Destiny sitting on the floor until Alex saw them.

Julie and Destiny stood up and looked at the boys in disbelief, Alex tapped Luke who was giving him back at them, the three of the boys then turned to look at the girls, their faces were sad and filled with regret.

"Look, we are, so, so sorry that we bailed on you." Luke was the first to talk and apologize.

"Yeah, I mean, the night really got away from us." Alex followed up and lastly, Reggie joined in with a comment about some twins that made the boys look at him.

"Just please tell me it had nothing to do with you getting back at Carrie's dad." Julie pleaded at the boys, she hoped this wasn't the case but the boys' high voice and chuckles showed the contrary. "Seriously? You're lying to me?" She asked and kept quiet. All of them kept quiet.

Destiny stood behind Julie, her hands clapped together, her eyes looked down at her shoes and back up at the guys.

"Okay, look, it was something we needed to do." Alex said and took a step closer, the boys followed with him.

"But, we'll do whatever it takes, we'll play the next school," Luke step forward and forward towards Julie but she interrupted his words.

"What? Another dance you can bail on me and make me look like a fool?" Her voice had hints of breaking, Destiny looked up and her and then back at the boys, they were all sad, but this time, she was on Julie's side. "Save it, you know what really sucks? Our songs were good, and all three of you knew what I've been through and how tough it's been for me to play, and then you do this?" She continued, her voice breaking mixed with anger "I told you guys, I told you, if you wanted help, Destiny could do it, she could try, but," she stopped and let out a sigh before she could continue "Bands don't do that to each other, friends don't do that to each other" Julie now looked at each boy who looked at her with a frown. "This was a mistake."

"You mean the school dance, right?" Luke spoke again, the question made Julie shake her head in disbelief.

"No, I mean joining a band with you guys." Julie didn't say another word, she walked away and left the gym, Luke called out her name but she didn't listen, she disappeared behind the doors.

"Well, if, if Julie's not in the band, then," Reggie looked at Alex with a worried tone.

"There is no band." Luke answered back, his eyes fell on Destiny and he frowned "We messed up big time didn't we?"

"You guys really have no idea," Destiny finally spoke up "You guys need to give her a break tonight, don't try to talk her back into the band, it won't happen." She sighed and took steps forward at them. "You guys broke your promise to her, and in some way, to me too." The brunette looked at them and sighed. "Next time, you come to me, I'll find a way to talk to Bobby and help you guys, but please no more broken promises." The three of them nodded their heads at the girl.

Destiny then walked away and tried to find Julie but the ringtone coming from her phone changed her plans, she would call Julie later and tell her what happened and let her know she left, and talk if she wanted. The night wasn't like she imagined, it had become a nightmare.
