interview #24 @AngMerlo

1 What's your favorite thing about Wattpad?

My readers. Before Wattpad, I didn't have a lot of support from my family. My writing was purely a private affair. Wattpad changed that. It's been such a boost of confidence to get as many readers and compliments as I have.

2 What's one Wattpad goal?

I'd love to transition to getting paid for my stories, but I'm not holding my breath. Right now, my novel, DEVIL'S LAKE, is available on here and on Amazon. So if you REALLY love the book and want it for your shelf, you can order the paperback. But I'm not forcing readers to buy it to read it because I don't have confidence I'd gain a good market by doing that. I'm more interested in being read. But, hey, if you want a collector's copy, I've made one available for purchase.

3 Are you still surprised when you gain a new vote, follower or comment?

Not really. At the height of my novel's popularity, I was getting about 400 readers a day. Now, I get around 40 a day with no real effort on my part. Notifications of new votes is a daily thing. I do still find a thrill in reading comments on my story as they're relatively rare. I wish people would comment more, but most of my readers have always been pretty quiet.

4 What's a good piece of advice for a newcomer?

Wattpad is a reading social network. Aside from writing well, you have to really become a part of the supportive community here. The easiest time I've had with that is competing in short story contests. You can find out who's competing with you, read their story, offer your support. The better you are at networking, the more you can build up momentum for success. But it can be super time-consuming. Wattpad can end up taking over your life if you let it. I have friends who've had a ton more success than I have and have expressed relief that their current stories aren't as popular because it's allowed them to enjoy writing more.So yeah, if you want ANY success, be a friend. But don't let Wattpad consume you.

5 What's a song you enjoy? Who is the artist?

I've been listening to Audrey Assad's "Unfolding" a lot lately. I also like Breaking Benjamin, Digital Daggers, and Shaed's "Trampoline."

6 What's your favorite holiday and why?

I've always loved Halloween because you get to pretend you're something you're not. It's creative like that.

7 What is your schedule regrading your writing?

Right now, I don't really have a schedule. The last project I was working on was DEVIL'S BRIDE, the sequel to DEVIL'S LAKE, but in January, I ended up in the hospital and it reprioritized things for me.

8 How would you spend a rainy day?

Probably spending too much time online.

9 If you could spend the day with your favorite celeb, who would you choose and what would you do?

Wow. Yeah, I don't know. I'm a super shy person and would probably just run the other way at the opportunity.

10 If you could gain advice from your favorite author, who would you choose and what would you ask?

Sharon Shinn is not necessarily my favorite author, but her prose really impresses me. She's absolutely amazing in how she describes music. I'd ask her about her writing process with describing music. How does she go about making it feel like we're actually hearing it.

11 What's your favorite TV show?

I haven't watched the latest season, but I've really enjoyed Black Mirror. When I was much younger, I also loved The Outer Limits.

request time!

If you're looking for a quick read, you can check out my short story, WattLove. It's a cute little Wattpad romance involving a girl meeting her Wattpad love for the first time and realizing she's more attracted to his green-eyed best friend. Certainly, isn't my typical genre, but it can be read in one sitting and can bring out a smile.
