It was during my short stay in Katowice, Poland, in 2012 that I met the woman who inspired the mother of the main character in this novel. Sitting on a bench at the train station, this beautiful stranger told me about her experience in the country. She also shared some details about her family. When Borys Leszczyński (fictional character) implored me to tell his life story, it was her serene beautiful face that immediately came to mind as I started looking for a mother for him.

Canadian resident until June 2022, I witnessed and experienced the measures put in place during the state of emergency following the protests of Canadian truck drivers. Borys' story includes both fictional and real elements about contemporary events of our time. The main character's opinions, experiences, and outlook took shape as the situation evolved there.

Although Borys Leszczyński's story can be read completely independently of the saga "At the Twilight of Mankind" to which it belongs, Borys' journey provides explanations to certain questions left unanswered in the other novel. Indeed, the events of the last three years have elucidated the mystery of the creation of the world of 2082 in which 90-year-old Borys currently lives. As for the novel At the Twilight of Mankind, it was written in 2017, and the dream from which the plot was inspired dates back to my childhood.

I therefore encourage all readers to keep in mind that the first ideas, the characters, the main plot of the saga saw the light of day more than thirty-five years ago in the imagination of a little girl on a small island of the West Indies well before the events that Borys describes in his memoir.

I hope that you will be able to appreciate this character as much as I do despite his opinions, his weaknesses, his personality, and his orientation.
