The Fires of Pompeii (2)

They run back to the TARDIS, but when The Doctor pulls open the curtain. The TARDIS is no longer there

"You're kidding. You're not telling me the TARDIS has gone," Donna sighs

"Okay,"

"Where is it then?"

"You told me not to tell you,"

"Oi. Don't get clever in Latin," Donna scolds hi

"Excuse me. Excuse me. There was a box. Big blue box. Big blue wooden box, just over there. Where's it gone?" The Doctor asks the fruit seller from earlier. Poppy walks up beside him.

"Sold it, didn't I?"

"But it wasn't yours to sell,"

"It was on my patch, weren't it? I got fifteen sesterces for it. Lovely jubbly,"

"Who'd you sell it to?" Poppy asks

"Old Caecilius. Look, if you want to argue, why don't you take it out with him? He's on Foss Street. Big villa. Can't miss it,"

"Thanks," The Doctor takes Poppy's hand and drags her away. It takes her a few seconds but she runs back "What'd he buy a big blue wooden box for?!"

----------&----------

Poppy's in her own world as she wonders around the town square. She only gets pulled back to reality when Donna says something that brings up a memory. Well, not a memory, but a familiar feeling, like she has to step in and explain things she didn't know she knew

"Plenty of time. We could get everyone out easy,"

"Yeah, except we're not going to," Poppy steps forward between The Doctor and Donna. Said woman looks at Poppy in outrage.

"Don't you want to save everyone?!"

"Fixed point in time," Poppy shrugs "I'm assuming,"

"Poppy's right," The Doctor grabs Donna and tries to pull her along. Donna stops

"Says who?"

"Says me,"

"What, and you're in charge?

"TARDIS, Time Lord, yeah,"

"Donna, human, no" Poppy snorts

"Don't try and pull the alien card on us,"

"I don't need your permission. I'll tell them myself,"

"You stand in the market place announcing the end of the world, they'll just think you're a mad old soothsayer. Now, come on. Tardis. We are getting out of here," He pulls Poppy along. Who doesn't object to him grabbing her hand yet again.

"Well, I might just have something to say about that, Spaceman, History girl!"

"Oh, we bet you will!"

----------&----------

They arrive at the house, just as another earthquake hits. The Doctor stops a stature from falling over and who Poppy assumes to eb Caecilius appears

"Thank you, kind sir. I'm afraid business is closed for the day. I'm expecting a visitor,"

"That's me, I'm a visitor. Hello," he shakes his hand

"Who are you?"

"I am Spartacus,"

"And so am I,"

"Same," Poppy joins in.

"Mister and Mrs Spartacus," he then gestures to Poppy "and your daughter,"

Different responses come out of the trio

"Oh no, no, no. We're not, we're not married,"

"We're not together,"

"I'm not their daughter," Poppy laughs

"Oh, then brother and sisters? Yes, of course. You look very much alike,"

"Really?" the three of them look to each other

"I'm sorry, but I'm not open for trade,"

"And that trade would be?" Poppy asks

"Marble. Lopus Caecilius. Mining, polishing and design thereof. If you want marble, I'm your man,"

"That's good. That's good, because I'm the marble inspector," The Doctor hols up physic paper. Poppy stopped in her tracks. How did she know what that was?

"By the gods of commerce, an inspection. I'm sorry, sir. I do apologise for my son,"

"And this is my good wife, Metella. I must confess, we're not prepared for a..." Poppy interrupts him

"Nothing to worry about. I'm, I'm sure you've nothing to hide. Although, frankly..." The Doctor then interrupts her, pointing to the TARDIS

"that object looks rather like wood to me,"

"I only bought it today,"

"Ah, well. Caveat emptor,"

"Oh, you're Celtic. There's lovely," Poppy smirks slightly. Before tapping the TARDIS, pretending to inspect it

"I'm sure it's fine, but we might have to take it off your hands for a proper inspection,"

Donna starts rambling about holidays, Poppy drowns her out and The Doctor takes Donna aside.

"I'm just gonna," Poppy gestures to the TARDIS "inspect a bit more,"

"Announcing Lucius Petrus Dextrus, Chief Augur of the City Government," A middle aged man wearing a cloak over the right half of his body enters. Poppy zones out yet again. Sometimes she just gets in these moods. Where everything is irrelevant. She assumed this was happening because of the fact the Pompeii was exploding soon.

"Pardon me, sir. I have guests. This is Spartacus, Spartacus, and er Spartacus,"

"A name is but a cloud upon a summer wind.

"But the wind is felt most keenly in the dark," The Doctor and Lucius go back and forth until Lucius stops

"Damn. Very clever, sir. Evidently, a man of learning,"

"Oh, yes. But don't mind me. Don't want to disturb the status quo,"

"He's Celtic,"

"We'll be off in a minute,"

Donna refuses as The Doctor drags her away, Poppy almost opening the TARDIS' doors until something attracts her and The Doctor's eyes.

"Exactly as you specified. It pleases you, sir?"

"As the rain pleases the soil,"

"Oh, now that's...

"different," Poppy finishes for The Doctor

"Who designed that, then?"

"My Lord Lucius was very specific,"

"Where'd you get the pattern?" Poppy asks, referring to the modern circuit looking thing.

"On the rain and mist and wind,"

"But that looks like a circuit,"

"Made of stone," The Doctor and Poppy chorus

"Do you mean you just dreamt that thing up?"

"That is my job, as City Augur,"

"City what now?" Poppy asks

"Ha. You must excuse my friend, she's from Barcelona," He turns to Donna and Poppy "No, but this is an age of superstition. Of official superstition. The Augur is paid by the city to tell the future. The wind will blow from the west? That's the equivalent of ten o'clock news,"

A girl enters the room, swaying and pale.

"They're laughing at us. Those two, they use words like tricksters. They're mocking us,"

"No, no, I'm not. I meant no offence," The Doctor backtracks

"I'm sorry. My daughter's been consuming the vapours," Metella runs over to her

"Oh, for gods, Mother. What have you been doing to her?"

"Not now, Quintus!"

"Yeah, but she's sick. Just look at her," he gestures to his sister

"I gather I have a rival in this household. Another with the gift,"

"What bloody gift?" Poppy whispers to The Doctor. He shushes her.

"Oh, she's been promised to the Sibylline Sisterhood. They say she has remarkable visions,"

"The prophecies of women are limited and dull. Only the menfolk have the capacity for true perception,"

"I'll tell you where the wind's blowing right now, mate," Poppy threatens. There's a small tremor

"The Mountain God marks your words. I'd be careful, if I were you,"

"Don't threaten me,"

"Consuming the vapours, you say?" The Doctor gives Poppy a look. She rolls her eyes.

"They give me strength,"

"It doesn't look like it to me,"

"Is that your opinion as a doctor?"

"I beg your pardon?"

"Doctor. That's your name,"

"How do you know that?"

"And you. You call yourself Noble and Watcher" Evelina looks to Poppy "oh, but you have many names,"

"What?" Poppy asks gently

"Now then, Evelina. Don't be rude," Metella scolds her daughter slightly

"No, no, no, no. Let her talk,"

"You three come from so far away,"

"The female soothsayer is inclined to invent all sorts of vagaries,"

"Oh, not this time, Lucius. No, I reckon you've been out-soothsayed,"

"Is that so, man from Gallifrey?"

"What?" The Doctor looks very confused

"The strangest of images. Your home is lost in fire, is it not?"

"Doctor, what are they doing?"

"And you, daughter of..." it takes Lucius a moment before Donna's home comes "London,"

"How does he know that?" Poppy steps closer to The Doctor

"Daughter of Rome," Poppy's head starts to hurt and she stumbles over. The Doctor grabs her and Donna runs over

"Poppy! Is it the memories again?" Poppy nods through her pain as Lucius continues

"This is the gift of Pompeii. Every single oracle tells the truth,"

"That's impossible," Donna states in between comforting Poppy

"Doctor, she is returning,"

"Who's she?"

"And you, daughter of London. There is something on your back,"

"What's that mean?"

"Daughter of Rome. Your memories are hidden,"

"Anyone can tell that!" Donna shouts as Poppy's pain increases.

"They are hidden for a purpose," he continues

"Her memories stop her from revelling who she is. The kind of woman she will become, the kind of woman she has been. A dark future, A dark past." Evelina steps forward as Poppy screams in pain. The Doctor kisses her forehead gently before turning back to Evelina "Even the word Doctor is false. Your real name is hidden. It burns in the stars, in the Cascade of Medusa herself. You are a Lord, sir. A Lord of Time,"

As Evelina falls, so does Poppy. The Doctor catching her on instinct.
