The Fires of Pompeii (3)
Poppy assumed she'd missed something. Because she was one moment calmly sleeping in a bed, the next running for her life/hiding behind The Doctor whilst a huge rock, fire creature was standing there.
"What the fu..." Poppy gets interrupted by The Doctor
"Water. We need water. Quintus. All of you, get water. Donna!" Everything's a blur, but when water's thrown on the creature, Poppy turns around to look for Donna, but finds she's not there.
"Donna?" The Doctor questions "where'd she go?!" he asks Poppy
"How the bloody hell am I supposed to know? I wake up from passing out and find that thing!" The Doctor nods slightly before leading Poppy out of the house in search for her best friend.
----------&----------
"Let me go!" Donna screams before The Doctor and Poppy enter
"This prattling voice will cease forever!" what Poppy assumes to be some kind of cult leader, swings up her knife.
"Oh, that'll be the day," Poppy casually walks in to their line of sight, The Doctor following.
"No man is allowed to enter the Temple of Sibyl!" All the women turn to face her
"Well, that's all right. Just us girls," Poppy snorts as The Doctor slowly leads them closer to Donna
"Do you know, I met the Sibyl once. Yeah, hell of a woman. Blimey, she could dance the Tarantella. Nice teeth. Truth be told, I think she had a bit of a thing for me. I said it would never last. She said, I know. Well, she would," The Doctor and Poppy are now standing over Donna
"I think that's a bit clue she did in fact like you," The Doctor cocks his head to the side before looking down at Donna.
"You all right there?"
"Oh, never better,"
"I like the toga," Poppy compliments
"Thank you. And the ropes?"
"Yeah, not so much,"
The Doctor unties Donna with his screwdriver
"What magic is this?"
"Let me tell you about the Sibyl, the founder of this religion. She would be ashamed of you. All her wisdom and insight turned sour. Is that how you spread the word, hey? On the blade of a knife?"
"Yes, a knife that now welcomes you,"
"Calm down love," Poppy puts her hands up.
"Show me this man,"
The women bow and Poppy steps towards the curtain "what am I? Chopped liver"
"High Priestess, the stranger would defile us!"
"Let me see. This one is different. He carries starlight in his wake,"
"Oh, very perceptive. Where do these words of wisdom come from?"
"The gods whisper to me,"
"They've done far more than that,"
"Might we beg audience? Look upon the High Priestess?" Two sisters draw the veil aside at Poppy's request, which reveals that the High Priestess is stone.
"Oh, my God. What's happened to you?"
"I don't know what tanning shop you're going to..." The Doctor and Donna look at Poppy as if to tell her it isn't time to joke "I joke when I'm panicked, or scarred, or both,"
"The heavens have blessed me,"
"Blessed?!" Poppy screams
"If I might?" The Doctor touches her hand "Does it hurt?"
"It is necessary,"
"Who told you that?" Poppy asks
"The voices,"
"Is that what's going to happen to Evelina? Is this what's going to happen to all of you?"
"The blessings are manifold," the head sister shows both the companions her forearm.
"They're stone,"
"I think we gathered that," Poppy steps backwards
"Exactly. The people of Pompeii are turning to stone before the volcano erupts. But why?"
"This word, this image in your mind. This volcano. What is that?"
"More to the point, why don't you know about it?" Poppy steps forward so she's standing next to The Doctor "I thought you guys knew the future,"
"Who are you?" The Doctor questions
"High Priestess of the Sibylline,"
"No, no, no, no. I'm talking to the creature inside you. The thing that's seeding itself into a human body, in the dust, in the lungs, taking over the flesh and turning it into, what?"
"Your knowledge is impossible,"
"Oh, but you can read my mind. You know it's not. I demand you tell me who you are!"
"We are awakening," The High Priestess speaks with two voices, her own and one deeper, which takes over.
"The voice of the gods,"
"Words of wisdom, words of power. Words of wisdom, words of power. Words of wisdom..." The sisters start rocking back and forth chanting. Poppy steps backwards, away from the creature
"Name yourself! Planet of origin. Galactic coordinates! Species designation according to the universal ratification of the Shadow Proclamation!"
"We are rising!" Poppy screams in shock at the once High priestess. Donna grabs her hand.
"Tell me your name!"
"Pyrovile,"
"Pyrovile. Pyrovile. Pyrovile," the sisters chant
"What's a Pyrovile?" Donna whispers
"Well, that's a Pyrovile, growing inside her. She's a halfway stage,"
"That thing in the villa. That was an adult Pyrovile,"
"How come that was less scary!" Poppy exclaims
"And the breath of a Pyrovile will incinerate you, Doctor," The Pyrovile points and The Doctor grabs Poppy's hand, sensing her fear as he takes out a water pistol.
"I warn you, I'm armed. Donna, get that grill open. Poppy, stay behind me,"
"what for?!"
"Just," He gestures his head to the grill and Donna goes anyway "What are the Pyrovile doing here?"
"We fell from the heavens. We fell so far and so fast, we were rendered into dust,"
"Right, creatures of stone shattered on impact," Poppy notes "perfectly normal explanation"
"When was that, seventeen years ago?" The Doctor keeps aiming his 'pistol' but still has a tight grip on Poppy's hand.
"We have slept beneath for thousands of years,"
"Okay, so seventeen years ago woke you up, and now you're using human bodies to reconstitute yourselves. But why the psychic powers?"
"We opened their minds and found such gifts,"
"Okay, that's fine. So, you force yourself inside a human brain, use the latent psychic talent to bond. I get that, I get that, yeah. But seeing the future? That is way beyond psychic. You can see through time. Where does the gift of prophecy come from?"
"Got it!" Donna's voice grabs Poppy's attention, the grill lays open
"Now get down,"
"What, down there?" Donna asks
"Yes, down there, both of you," Poppy lets go and slowly walks over to Donna, keeping her eyes on the creature "Why can't this lot predict a volcano? Why is it being hidden?"
"Sisters, I see into his mind. The weapon is harmless"
"Don't kill the vibe!" Poppy shouts as Donna swings her legs around
"Yeah, but it's got to sting," The Doctor squirts the priestess and she cries out in pain
"Get down there now!" Donna jumps and Poppy goes down after her, The Doctor following. Both doing it with ease as they're wearing trousers.
"You fought her off. With a water pistol. I bloody love you!" Donna exclaims
"This way," The Doctor leads them down a slope
"Into the volcano?" Poppy asks
"No way!" Donna protests
"Yes way. Appian way!"
"Loving the references. But it's boiling up here! Imagine it down there!" Poppy shouts as they walk down.
