The Runaway Bride (2)
A/N: Comments mean a lot!
----------&----------
Poppy lets the Doctor lead her to a blue box. It seemed familiar. As if she'd heard stories about it. Her parents... she lost the thought again. Whenever something reminded her of them. Whoever they were. Her mind would blank. Poppy tears her hand away from The Doctor. Before he flings the box's doors open.
"This is insane!" She shouts before stepping inside. What she sees next should have shocked her. But it's almost like she knew "It's... bigger," The Doctor was running around, pushing buttons randomly and not really paying full attention "I mean, it can't be bigger on the inside, that's not possible, it'd have to be smaller on the outside. But even that sounds ridiculous. Something that manipulates your eyesight or something," The Doctor got distracted and looked at her in shock.
"Well, that hasn't happened before. It's called the TARDIS, I don't have time to explain," he went back to flying the TARDIS. It started making a noise.
"Is it meant to be..." Poppy couldn't describe the noise "Groaning? Wheezing?"
"Yep!"
"I highly doubt that," She grabs onto the railing when sparks start flying "Can you even fly this thing?!"
"Behave," The Doctor spoke to the console. When the TARDIS hit the floor, Poppy was knocked of balance and clung to the railing tighter.
She was to distracted trying not to scream that she didn't pay attention to what The Doctor was doing. When she heard the door creak open, she stood up and jumped over the string to get close to it.
"Hold the other door open," he directed Poppy and she grabbed onto the other part of railing before using her legs to keep it open. "Open the door!" he screamed to Donna.
"What?!"
"Open the door!" Both the Doctor and Poppy shouted.
"I can't it's locked!" As the Doctor reached into his pocket Poppy stepped forward so she holding the door open with her right hand and holding the railing with her left. When Donna opens the window, she looks to Poppy "Santa's a robot,"
"Donna, open the door!"
"What for?!"
"You've got to jump!" Poppy shouted, catching onto what The Doctor's plan was.
"I'm not blimming jumping! I'm supposed to be getting married!" The car speeds up and Poppy looks to The Doctor in panic but he pulls the string and they move to catch up. They hit a car and Poppy nearly falls out before her boots land on the car roof and she swings herself back in. The TARDIS hits the floor again when they catch up and the Doctor falls into Poppy. She pushes him back with her legs. He sonics the Robot.
"Listen to us, you've got to jump!"
"I'm not jumping on a motorway!"
"For God's sake Donna!" Poppy nearly slips out again.
"Whatever that thing is, it needs you. And whatever it needs you for, it's not good! Now, come on!"
"I'm in my wedding dress!"
"Yes! You look lovely! Come on!" Poppy would laugh if she wasn't trying not to pee herself, hold herself up and persuade her best friend to do something insane. Donna opens the door and Poppy holds onto the railing with her right hand now, the left reaching out with The Doctor's to catch Donna.
"I can't do it!"
"Trust me" Those two words sent a chill down Poppy's spine.
"Is that what you said to her? Your friend? The one you lost? Did she trust you?"
"Yes, she did. And she is not dead. She is so alive. Now, jump!" Donna leaped up at his words. Both the Doctor and Poppy were thrown backwards, landing next to each other with Donna on top of them. The TARDIS doors shut.
----------&----------
Donna checks her watch whilst Poppy watches The Doctor use a fire extinguisher inside the TARDIS.
"The funny thing is, for a spaceship, she doesn't really do that much flying." The Doctor walks up to both of them, standing to the right of Donna "We'd better give her a couple of hours. You all right?"
"Doesn't matter," Donna shrugged
"Did we miss it?"
"Yeah," Donna dragged out the word.
"Well, you can book another date,"
"Course we can," Poppy just starts rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. She's never been able to stand still.
"You've still got the honeymoon,"
"It's just a holiday now,"
"Yeah. Yeah. Sorry,"
"She didn't even turn up to the wedding so..." Donna nods her head towards Poppy who was trying hard not to laugh "It's not your fault,"
"Oh? That's a change,"
"Wish you had a time machine, then we could go back and get it right,"
"Yeah, yeah. But even if I did, I couldn't go back on someone's personal timeline. Apparently,"
"And you wouldn't go back to something so minor. You'd go back to meet Shakespeare, Vincent Van Gogh! You'd see famous events in history! You wouldn't go back and go to a stupid wedding,"
"History geek," Donna mutters whilst sitting on the edge of the building, The Doctor stares at Poppy until he reboots his brain and wraps his jacket around Donna and sitting next to her. Poppy sits next to him on the other side.
"God, you're skinny. This wouldn't fit a rat."
"Oh, and you'd better put this on," he pulls out a gold ring.
"Oh, do you have to rub it in?" Poppy laughed slightly.
"Those creatures can trace you. This is a bio-damper. Should keep you hidden. "The Doctor places the ring on her finger "With this ring, I thee bio-damp."
"For better or for worse." they sat there for a moment before The Doctor reached into his other pocket. Something was telling him to do it, against the pain in his chest. He brought out a ring with a star and the moon it "you should probably wear one too. Y'know. In case," he looked to Poppy "May I?"
Poppy put her right hand out rather dramatically "you may," The ring slipped onto her ring finger perfectly
"So, come on then. Robot Santa's, what are they for?" Donna interrupted
"Ah, your basic robot scavenger. The Father Christmas stuff is just a disguise. They're trying to blend in. I met them last Christmas.
"Why, what happened then?"
"Great big spaceship hovering over London? You didn't notice?"
"I had a bit of a hangover," The Doctor looked to Poppy in question next.
"I was revising for my exams,"
"On Christmas?"
"Yeah,"
"I spent Christmas Day just over there, the Powell Estate, with this family. My friend, she had this family. Well, they were..." The Doctor paused "Still, gone now."
"Your friend, who was she?" Poppy asked. Whenever she was brought up, The Doctor became quiet.
"Question is, what do camouflage robot mercenaries want with you? And how did you get inside the Tardis? I don't know. What's your job?" The Doctor made a grab for his sonic screwdriver.
"I'm a secretary,"
"It's weird. I mean, you're not special, you're not powerful, you're not connected, you're not clever, you're not important,"
"This friend of yours. Just before she left, did she punch you in the face? Stop bleeping me!" Donna knocks down the screwdriver.
"What kind of secretary?
"I'm at HC Clements. It's where I met Lance. I was temping," Poppy rolled her eyes at the story to come.
"I mean, it was all a bit posh really. I'd spent the last two years at a double-glazing firm. Well, I thought I'm never going to fit in here. And then he made me a coffee. I mean, that just doesn't happen. Nobody gets the secretaries a coffee."
"And Lance, he's the head of HR! He doesn't need to bother with me. But he was nice, he was funny. And it turns out he thought everyone else was really snotty too. So that's how it started, me and him. One cup of coffee. That was it,"
"When was this?
"Six months ago,"
"Bit quick to get married,"
"That's what Poppy keeps saying but well, he insisted. And he nagged, and he nagged me. And he just wore me down. And then finally, I just gave in,"
"That's not how I remember it," Poppy laughed.
"What does HC Clements do?"
"Oh, security systems. You know, entry codes, ID cards, that sort of thing. If you ask me, it's a posh name for locksmiths,"
"Keys," Poppy simplified
"Keys," The Doctor echoed
"Anyway, enough of my CV. Come on, it's time to face the consequences. Oh, this is going to be so shaming. You can do the explaining, History girl and Martian boy.
"Yeah. I'm not from Mars," The Doctor looked to Poppy, as if telling her as well as reminding Donna. He stood up and after he helped them up, put his jacket back on.
"Oh, I had this great big reception all planned. Everyone's going to be heartbroken,"
----------&----------
As they walk through the halls, Poppy hums along to the Christmas music. She knew exactly what was happening, they were having the reception without Donna. When they enter, the room falls silent. The song stops but Poppy's mumbling can still be heard "so here it is, Merry Christmas. Everybody's having fun..." she trails off.
"You had the reception without me?
"Donna, what happened to you?"
"You had the reception without me?"
"Hello. I'm the Doctor," He introduces himself. Poppy just stand there awkwardly behind Donna
They had the reception without me," She turns around to both of them
"Yes, I gathered,"
"That they did," Both the Doctor and Poppy answer.
"Well, it was all paid for. Why not?" A blonde woman standing by Lance questions.
"Thank you, Nerys," Donna looks like she might kill someone
"Your input is valid," The Doctor hides his smirk at Poppy's comment.
"Well, what were we supposed to do? I got your silly little message in the end. I'm on Earth? Very funny," Donna's mother walks forward "Poppy didn't even show up to the wedding, then comes strolling in singing Christmas songs. What the hell happened? How did you do it? I mean, what's the trick, because I'd love to know!" Everyone keeps talking and Donna 'bursts into tears'. Lance hugs her and everyone starts clapping. The Doctor looks rather awkward and confused that Poppy wasn't comforting her. When Donna faces The Doctor and Poppy, she winks.
----------&---------
Everyone is dancing around happily apart from the Doctor and Poppy. He's standing by the bar as she sips some form of alcoholic beverage swinging her legs at the bar.
"You okay?" The Doctor walks up to her.
"Meh," She takes another sip "you?"
"Meh," something catches his eyes and he goes t leave "I'll be back," And that's all Poppy saw of him until he came running in
"Donna! Donna, they've found you!"
"But you said I was safe," Poppy jumps of the bar stool, grabs her jacket she had discarded and runs over to them
"They're here aren't they?" she ties her hair up quickly.
"The bio-damper doesn't work. We've got to get everyone out,"
"My God, it's all my family," Donna looks around franticly
"Out the back door!" The Doctor grabs Donna and she grabs Poppy; who's still carrying her jacket. They try different exits but they've all got robots outside.
"We're trapped,"
