{A TOWN CALLED MERCY - 1}

"Put the gun down, Doctor!"

"I thought you agreed with me!"

"Gun, down," Willow starts slowly "Then we can talk about this, we're not letting him be murdered in front of a whole town! Let him keep some of his dignity!"

----------&----------

The Doctor is standing in the middle of a desert, a town in front of him. It seems to be the old west in the USA. There's a sign reading Keep Out and the residents count is recently changed from 80 to 81.

"Mercy. Eighty-one residents," He reads off another sign, not looking to the four people he's with

"Look at this. It's a load of stones and lumps of wood. What is it?" Amy points to a border laid outside the town.

"Well..." Alex takes out her sonic, pointing it at the stones, she sighs reading the reading "boring..."

"So, what is it?" Willow asks her daughter, who was wearing some black jeans and a green shirt.

"Just a load of stones and lumps of wood,"

The Doctor steps forward, going to enter the town

"The sign does say Keep Out," Rory tells him

"I see Keep Out signs as suggestions more than actual orders, like Dry Clean only!" The Doctor explains, hopping over the border and Amy shrugs, leading the others as they follow the time lord.

The streets are empty, and the group look around, where they can feel eyes on them. Not one resident speaks a word and The Doctor stops suddenly when an electric street lamp outside a Post Office sparks and switches off.

"That's not right..."

"It's a street lamp," Rory tries not to toll his eyes

"An electric street lamp around..." Willow thinks for a moment "ten years too early,".

"It's only a few years out,"

"That's what you said when you left your phone charger in Henry the Eighth's en-suite," The Doctor mutters and Rory cocks his head to the side, remembering the incident.

"Doctor, er -" Amy looks around nervously

"Anachronistic electricity, Keep Out signs, aggressive stares. Has someone been peeking at my Christmas list?" The Doctor smiles happily, taking out a toothpick and putting it in his mouth to chew.

"Doctor -" Amy tries again, but he walks away, leaving the Ponds to follow.

They enter a Saloon and the piano stops suddenly, along with the conversation, The Doctor looks around before sitting at the bar. He puts on an American accent, before ordering.

"Tea. But the strong kind," Willow laughs as The Doctor moves the toothpick with his tongue and it gets stuck stuck "Leave the bag in,"

"What're you doing here, son?" the woman behind the bar asks

"Son?" The Doctor laughs, returning to his normal voice, "You can stay," he turns around as a man stands and speaks up.

"Sir, might I enquire who you is?"

"Of course. I'm the Doctor. This is -" he goes to point to Willow, but everyone stands

"No need to stand. You see that? Manners," he says to Alex who watches as a man comes up to her father and starts measuring his back "Oh, thank you: But I don't need a new suit,"

"I'm the undertaker, sir," he explains and The Doctor gives him a polite smile before realising what he said, looking the man up and down.

A younger man in a brown suit and bowler hat steps forward  I got a question. Is you an alien?"

"Well, er, bit personal. It's all relative, isn't it? I mean, I think you're the aliens, but in this context, yes. Yes, I suppose I am," The Doctor is very proud, but suddenly the town's people are closing in and picking him up. He's carried out into the town and the others shout out as they're dragged out.

"Guys!" The Doctor shouts for help

"Doctor!" Amy is being dragged behind Willow "Put him down!"

"Leave him alone!" Rory is behind Alex, who's struggling the most, overpowering the men, just as Willow is.

"Get off us!"

"Rory! Willow!" The Doctor shouts out "everything is completely under control! Guys, guys, guys!"

The men throw the Doctor out of the town - literally. He cracks his back once over the line of stones and wood. The others stop struggling and watch as they're allowed in the town still.

"Ow..."

When he turns around, the townsfolk all point their revolvers at him. Someone starts approaching in distance.

"He's coming. Oh God, he's coming..." someone mutters

"Preacher, say something," the younger man from earlier starts

"Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name..." The Doctor turns to see the cyborg looking person getting closer, he goes to run back into the town, but the guns are put up again. He cringes away. "Thy kingdom comes. Thy will be done,"

A shot is fired and everyone turns to see a man with a dark brown moustache, pointing his gun in the air

"You, bow tie. Get back across that line," He pulls back his coat to reveal a six-pointed metal star with the word Marshal on it "Now," The Doctor couldn't be quicker to jump over the rocks and wood, he turns and watches as the Cyborg stoops then vanishes.

"Isaac, he said he was a doctor. An alien doctor," The younger man tells him

"That a reason to hand him to his death?"

"Isaac, it could be him,"

"You know it isn't," Isaac walks back down the street, nodding to Amy and Willow "Ma'am," Amy nods back, slightly confused, but rolling with it.

----------&----------

"What was that outside?" The Doctor asks when they're safe inside the Marshel's office.

"The Gunslinger," Isaac sits on his desk "Showed up three weeks back. We've been prisoners ever since. See that border line stretching round the town? Woke up one morning, there it was. Nothing gets past it, in or out. No supply wagons, no reinforcements. Pretty soon the whole town's going to starve to death,"

"But you let us in," Rory crosses his arms

"You aren't carrying any food. Just five more mouths to feed. You added with the two that arrived a few weeks back, we'll all die even sooner now." Isaac sighs

"Two more people?" Alex asks

"Yeah, they turned up out of nowhere, no money or anything, I said they could stay above the Saloon, but they're more trouble than they're worth,"

"What happens if someone crosses the line?" The Doctor gets the conversation back on track. Isaac throws him a Stetson with a neat hole in it.

"Ah, well, he wasn't a very good shot, then."

"He was aiming for the hat,"

"He shoots people's hats?!" The Doctor sounds personally offended

"I think it was a warning shot," Amy explains to him, smiling at his confusion

"Hm, yes..." The Doctor inspects the hat, passing it to Rory, who passes it to Willow, who passes it to Amy "What does he want? Has he issued some kind of demand?"

"Says he wants us to give him the alien doctor," Amy hands Willow the hat back, and she passws it to Rory, who pass it to The Doctor in the same way - not even looking at it, paying attention to Isaac.

"But that's you. Why would he want to kill you?" Amy looks over at The Doctor as he throws the Stetson back to Isaac.

"I mean unless he's met you," Willow adds and Amy laughs

"And how could he know that we'd be here?" Rory lowers his voice "We didn't even know we'd be here,"

"We were aiming for Mexico. The Doctor was taking us to see the Day of the Dead Festival," Amy explains

"But failed, as usual," Alex rolls her eyes

"Oi!" The Doctor scolds her, before turning to Rory "That's what happens when people get toast crumbs on the console!" The Doctor sits where Issac was a minute ago "Anyway, I think it's about time I met him, don't you?"

"Who?"

The Doctor smirks, looking to Willow for her to explain, knowing she'd figured it out as well. She leans next to him on the desk

"The boy outside said he could be the alien doctor, but you said he wasn't, so you already know who it is,"

"Two alien doctors. We're like buses," The Doctor laughs "Resident eighty-one, I presume, so beloved by the townsfolk he warranted an alteration to the sign. Probably because he rigged up these electrics,"

"And I'm guessing he's in here, because if half the town suddenly wanted to throw me to my death, this is where I'd want to be," Willow finishes, "Well, here or far away from here. But if he loved the town this much, here'd be the best place to hide,".

"I don't know what you -"

A man inside a cell, throws off his blanket and stands, he has a blue curved mark down the left side of his face "Isaac, I think the time for subterfuge has passed," he steps out of his cell "Good afternoon. My name is Kahler-Jex. I'm the doctor,"

----------&----------

"The Kahler. I love the Kahler," The Doctor shakes Jex's hand "They're one of the most ingenious races in the galaxy. Seriously, they could build a spaceship out of Tupperware and moss!" he's still shaking Jex's hand, Amy pulls The Doctor back, forcing him to sit on the chair like an excited child waiting for chocolate cake.

"All right. How did you get -" Amy starts to ask, but is interrupted by furious banging on the door

"Issac!" A female shouts "I get you're busy and all, but I genuinely think this time she will kill me!"

Issac sighs, opening the door "What did you do this time?"

"Okay, I just shouted at some customer for -" the woman has a clear English accent and is interrupted by a man running

"Get in the bloody station!" he pushes the girl in, following and locking the door.

"What did you two do?" Issac asks slowly

" I merely shouted at a drunken idiot,"

"And I may have punched said idiot in the face," the two hadn't seen the others in the room, but Alex had seen them and stepped forward

"You - "Issac trailed off

"You idiots!" Alex shouts "You absolute morons!"

"Alex!" the girl says cheerfully, ignoring the shouting "What are you doing -" she looks at the group behind Alex, high eyes lingering on Amy and Rory "-here"

"You know these two?" Willow asks her daughter who sighs

"They're old...school friends" Alex gestures "This is Oliver and -"

"Emily!" the girl shouts, stepping forward, shaking Amy's had first "I've heard so much about you!"

"Me?" Amy laughs

"Yeah! Amelia Pond! Well, Williams," She smiles at Rory "You're so cool!"

"Oh well...thank you," Amy blushes

"She's cool? what about me?!" the Doctor sounds outraged, Alex, Emily and Oliver all look at him, muttering small 'nos'.

Willow laughs loudly and The Doctor stares at her in offence

"Anyway, sorry to crash whatever's happening here," Oliver apologises, pulling Emily back "Our vortex manipulators broke, and we got stuck here,"

"And we don't exactly...mix with the people here,"

"Cheap and nasty time travel," The Doctor shakes his head "It's fine, we can take you back,"

"Anyway," Willow turns to Jex "As Amy was asking "How did you get here?"

"My craft crashed about a mile or so out of town. I would have died if Isaac and the others hadn't pulled me from the wreckage,"

"And you stayed, as their doctor,"

"On my world I was a surgeon, so it seemed logical. And it gave me an opportunity to repay my debit to the town,"

"Listen to him. Talking like it was nothing." Issac laughs "Tell them about the cholera,"

"Now, Isaac, I'm sure our guests are -"

"Two years after he arrived, there was an outbreak of cholera. Issac starts "Thanks to the doc here, not a single person died,"

"A minor infection we'd found a treatment for centuries ago," Jex tells the group of now seven.

"No, no, what, what do you call them? The electrics?" Issac points to the lights

"Using my ship as a generator, I was able to rig up some rudimentary heating and lighting for the town,"

"So why does the Gunslinger want you?" Willow asks

"It doesn't matter," Issac says quickly

"I'm just saying, if we knew that -"

"America's the land of second chances," Willow rolls her eyes at the interruption "We called this town Mercy for a reason. Others, some round here, don't feel that way,"

"Now, Isaac, we've discussed this," Jex starts

"People whose lives you've saved are suddenly saying we should hand you over!"

"They're scared, that's all. You can hardly blame them,"

"Them being scared scares me. War only ended five years back. That old violence is still under the surface," Issac tells The Doctor ". We give up Doc Jex, then we hand the keys of the town over to chaos,"

"Did you try to repair your craft?" Alex questions slightly sceptical of the man

"Alex's right," The Doctor nods "Surely someone with your skills -"

"It really was very badly damaged," Jex says rather quickly

"We evacuate the town," The Doctor decides, standing "Our ship's just over the hills, room for everyone. Me and Alex will pop out, bring it back here and we can take Emily and Oliver back home. Then Robert's your uncle!"

"Really? Simple as that. No crazy schemes, no negotiations?"

"No causing a scene or taking over the town?" Willow adds

"I've matured. I'm twelve hundred years old now. Plus, I don't want to miss The Archers," he starts walking out, Alex following, muttering something to Oliver and Emily.

"Oh, so you're not even a tiny bit curious?" Amy is in shock

" Why would I be curious? It's a mysterious space cowboy assassin. Curious? Of course, I'm not curious," he goes to walk out, calling for Alex

"Son? Ma'am," Alex and The Doctor poke their heads around the door. "You've still got to get past the Gunslinger. How you going to do that?"

"With a little sleight of hand,". The Doctor puts on the Stetson and leaves.
