The TARDIS has parked herself on the first-floor landing of a staircase in a very stereotypical European hotel, the staircase winds its way up the floors in a tight set of flights.
"Let's go to Ravan-Skala, he says. The people are six hundred feet tall. You have to talk to them in hot air balloons and the Tourist Information Centre is made of one of their hats, he says," Amy complains
"I'm sorry, but I don't see any huge hats," Willow adds, watching as The Doctor rushes around in excitement.
"Amy, Beaky..." The Doctor starts, standing between Amy and Rory "Willow, blondie... this could be the most exciting thing I have ever seen,"
"I'm not even that blonde..." Alex mutters
"You're kidding," Rory groans
"How can you be excited about a rubbish hotel on a rubbish bit of Earth?"
"Because, assembled Ponds, this is not Earth. This has just been made to look like Earth. The craftsmanship involved. Can you imagine?"
"What? Then, where are we?" Willow questions, still following her boyfriend around the place
"I don't know. Something must have yanked us off course. Look at the detail on that cheese plant!"
"Right, but who would mock up an Earth hotel?" Rory, asking the right questions as The Doctor finds an apple in a large bowl.
"Colonists maybe, recreating a bit of home, like when ex-pats open English pubs in Mallorca. No, whoever did this, I am shaking his /stroke/ her hand /stroke/ tentacle,"
"Have you seen these?" Alex asks from a corner, looking at a set of photographs on a wall "Look at the labels underneath...
"Commander Halke, defeat," Rory reads under a photo of a Sontaran "Tim Heath, having his photo taken,"
"Lady Silver-Tear, Daleks," Willow also starts reading them
"Paige Barnes, other people's socks. Tim Nelson, balloons..." Amy joins
"Novice Prin, sabrewolves. Royston Luke Gold, Plymouth?" Alex reads from lower down
"Lucy Hayward, that brutal gorilla. Doctor, what does it mean?" Amy turns to him.
"I don't know. Let's find out!" He rings the bell on the desk and three people appear, two of them brandishing objects as weapons, the third waving a white flag.
"Whoa!" Rory backs up
"Blimey, that was a bit quick!"
"We surrender!" the one waving the white flag - a grey alien with slightly rodent front teeth and no hair - shouts at them.
"No, it's okay, we're not...we're nice!"
"Yep, nice!" Alex adds
"She's threatening me with a chair leg..." The Doctor says to Willow, pointing to the only female who was wearing hospital scrubs.
"Who are you?"
"Who are we? Who are you?!" Willow gets defensive
"Oh god, we're back in reception..." A teenage boy mutters
"We surrender," The alien continues
"I've never been threatened with a chair leg before!" The Doctor continues, looking at Alex "No, hang on, I tell a lie,"
"Did you just say, it's okay, we're nice?" Amy asks her husband in shock.
"Okay, I need everyone to shut up, now!" the lady in hospital scrubs shouts before lowering her 'weapon' and getting close to Alex.
"Rita, be careful, yeah?"
"Their pupils are dilated. They're as surprised as we are. Besides if it's a trick, it'll tell us something,"
"Oh, you're good. Oh, she's good..." The Doctor mutter to Willow "Amy, with regret, you're fired,"
"What?!"
"I'm kidding!" He then does the 'call me' sign to Rita, silently mouthing 'we'll talk'.
"Oi!" Willow slaps his arm
"I take it from the pathological compulsion to surrender, you're from Tivoli," The Doctor rubs his arm, slightly pointing to the non-human looking grey alien.
"Yes. The most invaded planet in the galaxy. Our anthem is called Glory to Insert Name Here," he says proudly
"You with the face, Howie," The Doctor remembers from the shouting earlier "you said you were surprised to be back in reception,"
"The walls move. Everything changes,"
"You, clever one,"
"Rita," Alex reminds her father
"What's he talking about?"
"The corridors twist and stretch. Rooms vanish and pop up somewhere else. It's like the hotel's alive,"
The Doctor turns off the hotel music, murmuring under his breath "That's quite enough of that,"
"Yeah, and it's huge, with, like, no way out," Howie adds
"Have you tried the front door?"
"No. In two days it never occurred to us to try the front door. Thank God you're here," Rita snaps at Rory and Amy laughs loudly, causing Willow to let out a small smile.
The Doctor opens the front doors, but instead there's a white brick wall "They're not doors, they're walls. Walls that look like doors. Door-walls, if you like, or dwalls. Woors even, though you'd probably got it when you said they're not doors,"
"That would mean the windows are..." Alex opens the curtains to reveal more bricks.
"Right, big day if you're a fan of walls,"
"It's not just that. The rooms have things in them,"
"Things? Hello!" the Doctor pops up from behind some flowers "What kind of things? Interesting things? I love things, ask anyone,"
"Why's he so hyper today?" Alex asks her mother
"No clue,"
"Bad dreams..." Rita answers The Doctor
"Well, that killed the mood. How did you get here?"
"I don't know. I'd just started my shift. I must have passed out, because suddenly I was here,"
"I was blogging. Next thing, this," Howie explains
"Oh, I was at work. I'm in Town Planning. We're lining all the highways with trees so invading forces can march in the shade,"
"Ah..."
"Which is nice for them,"
"Yeah," everyone nods, smiling awkwardly.
"So, what have we got. People snatched from their lives and dropped into an endless, shifting maze that looks like a 1980s hotel with bad dreams in the bedrooms," The Doctor takes out a rubix cube and Willow's eyes widen, recognising it as one from George's bedroom from a few months ago "Well, apart from anything else, that's just rude,"
----------&----------
"We'll pop back to the TARDIS, I'll do a planet-wide diagnostic sweep, and then we'll have a sing song!" The Doctor rushes up the stairs to where everyone arrived.
"Where's the TARDIS?" Amy asks "You parked it there, didn't you?"
"What's a TARDIS?"
"Our way out. And it's gone," Rory sighs, answering Howie's question as the hotel music starts again.
"Okay, this is bad. At the moment, I don't know how bad, but certainly we're three buses, a long walk and eight quid in a taxi from good. Are there any more of you?"
"Joe. But he's tied up right now," Rita responds
"Doing what?"
"No, I mean he's tied up right now,"
"oh...I really like you," Alex smirks.
----------&----------
The 8 of them enter a restaurant where they assume to be Joe is tied to a chair. All the tables are populated with ventriloquist's dummies, which are laughing. They fall silent and look around as the group enters fully.
"Hello. I'm the Doctor," he starts to walk up to Joe
"We're going to die here,"
"Lovely," Willow mutters
"Well, they certainly didn't mention that in the brochure... Is Joe there? Can I have a quick word?"
"Oh, it's still me, Doctor, but I've seen the light," The Doctor sits on the chair backwards "I lived a blasphemous life, but he has forgiven my inconstancy, and soon he shall feast,"
"Well, you've been here two days. What's he waiting for?"
"We weren't ready. We were still raw,"
"But now you're what... cooked?" Alex walks up to the table whilst The Doctor observes Joe's horseshoe tie clip and dice cufflinks.
"If you like... Soon you will be, too. Be patient. First, find your room,"
"My room?"
"There's a room here for everyone, Doctor. Even you,"
"You said you'd seen the light now -"
"Nothing else matters anymore. Only him. It's like these things. I used to hate them. They make me laugh now. Gottle o' geer. Gottle o' geer -" he starts repeating and there's laughter from him and the ventriloquist dolls "You should go. He'll be here soon,"
The Doctor stands, going to grab a luggage trolly and wheeling it under Joe's chair. "I think you should come with me,".
----------&----------
"Why you four? That's what I don't understand. Aside from all the other things I don't understand..." they're all back in the lobby and The Doctor is leant against the reception desk, Willow leaning on his arm.
"What does it matter? Sooner or later, someone will come along and rescue us," Gibbis starts and Alex turns off the hotel music, seeing it's putting everyone on edge "Or enslave us..."
"First, we find the TARDIS. Quick thing before we go. If you feel drawn to a particular room, do not go in, and make sure someone else can see you at all times,"
"Joe said, 'he will feast'. Is there something here with us?" Rita asks slowly as Joe laughs
"Something to add Joe?" Willow puts on a fake smile
"Here comes a candle to light you to bed. Here comes a chopper to chop off your head. Chop, chop, chop, chop..."
"Can we do something about him?!" Howie shouts, done with the cryptic laughing and messages. Joe just keeps laughing.
