{THE GOD COMPLEX - 3}

The group is scattered in different rooms on the same floor, Rory has a mop, Alex a broom and Rita, Amy and Willow are in room 216.

"Bring me death! Bring me glory! My master, my lord, I'm here! Come to me. I'm waiting here for you. He has promised me a glorious death. Give it to me now. I want him to know my devotion," Howie's voice rings out.

"Anything to do with either of you?" Rita asks, gesturing to a sad clown in the corner, both other women shake their heads "How's it going?"

"Don't talk to the clown," Amy says and Willow laughs slightly before they hear something with hooves stomp past the door, its horns scraping on the ceiling as it goes into the Spa.

"Praise him. Praise him!" Howie continues and the women rush out of the room, Alex is in the room across and she shuts the spa doors as Amy pulls off a bit of wood, using that as extra support.

"Rory, he's in!" Amy shouts and Rory uses his mop to jam the other doors. Everyone listens to The Doctor speaking to the hooved creature, but Howie's voice suddenly rings out.

"My master, my lord. I'm here!"

"That's Howie..." Rita mutters

"He's got out,"

"Oh god," Willow mumbles, banning her head on Amy's shoulder.

"Oh, bring me death!"

"No, no, no, no, no!" The Doctor's suddenly shouting as glass smashes "Rory, watch out!" Amy, Willow, Alex and Rita burst in.

"Stay back!" They can see it's a Minotaur now. It smashes a glass door where Rory was, walking out to find Howie.

"Ponds, bring the fish," The Doctor instructs, rushing out.

"What, the fish?" Amy looks around

"Oh, the fish," Willow points to it and Amy grabs it "We should find The Doctor," Willow rushes out, checking on Rory quickly before heading up the stairs, Rory realises she's gone on her own and quickly composes himself, trying to find her.

Will finds herself on the third floor and starts slowly waking down, looking at the room numbers, until she finds one ladled '16'. Gently, she opens up the handle and sees Madame Kovarian standing there, but before anything can be said, Rory had slammed the door shut. Willow stands still as the possibilities of what could have been said run through her head and tears start to pool in her eyes.

"Willow...are you okay?" Rory asks, grabbing her hands and forcing her to look at him, she shakes her head as the tears start ton rub down her face. This wasn't supposed to happen, what if that activated what the Minotaur wanted?

"Okay. just sit down, can you do that?" Willow does so, trying to regulate her breathing "okay, just keep breathing, can you tell me 5 things you can see?"

Back in reception, Howie's photograph has appeared on the wall and The Doctor and Rory are talking by it whilst in another room, Amy and Willow are on a sofa, Willow laying in Amy's lap as she plays with her hair comforts her.

"Have you found your room yet?"

"No... No. Is that good or bad?" Rory asks nervously

"Maybe you're not scared of anything,"

"Well, after all the time I spent with you in the TARDIS, what was left to be scared of?"

"You said that in the past tense,"

"No, I didn't...You know, Howie had been in speech therapy. He'd just got over this massive stammer. What an achievement. I mean, can you imagine?" Rory mutters sadly "I'd forgotten not all victories are about saving the universe..."

Later on, Amy has finally got Willow up and they both enter the security room with Rory where The Doctor and Alex are.

"What's going on? Rita's disappeared,"

"What's she doing there?" Willow asks her voice sounding rough from the crying as she notices Rita is on the security feed in a hallway.

"Rita. Rita, please. Let me find you," The Doctor begs into the phone

"You stay where you are. Please, let me be robbed of my faith in private,"

"Look, Rita. Rita. Go into the room. Lock the door,"

"I'm not frightened. I'm blessed, Doctor. I'm at peace... I'm going to hang up,"

"No. No, no, Rita!"

"Goodbye, Doctor,"

"Rita!"

"Thank you for trying,"

"Rita, please! Please! Please!" Rita puts down the phone and waits, smiling, as the shadow of the Minotaur is cast over her. Willow takes her sonic out of her pocket and turns the monitor off, putting her left hand on The Doctor's shoulder and letting him hold the other.

Everyone is sat in the bar now, Gibbis is raiding the kitchen and three bodies are laid out in the restaurant now as The Doctor smashes breakables in anger.

He finally sits down and Willow puts her hand on his knee, "Okay. It preys on people's fear and possesses them. But Rita wasn't afraid. She was brave and calm. Maybe it's something to do with the people, some connection between the four of you that'll tell me how to fight it,"

"Yes, you keep saying that, but you never do. And while we wait, people keep dying. And we'll be next," Gibbis tells him

"Look, he'll work it out. He always does. Just let him riff."

"And move anything expensive out of his way," Willow adds

"Oh, no. Oh, no, no..." The Doctor stands abruptly and puts his face in his hands

"Doctor, what's wrong?"

"It's not fear. It's faith. Not just religious faith, faith in something. Howard believed in conspiracies, that external forces controlled the world. Joe had dice cufflinks and a chain with a horseshoe. He was a gambler. Gamblers believe in luck, an intangible force that helps them win or lose. Gibbis has rejected any personal autonomy and is waiting for the next batch of invaders to oppress him and tell him what to do,"

"They all believe there's something guiding them, about to save them. That's what it replaces. Every time someone was confronted with their most primal fear, they fell back on their most fundamental faith. And all this time, I have been telling you to dig deep, find the thing that keeps you brave. I made you expose your faith, show them what they needed," The Doctor sits down by the bar

"But why us?" Alex leans forward on a table

"Why are we here?" Rory asks

"It doesn't want you two. That's why it kept showing you a way out. You're not religious or superstitious, so there's no faith for you to fall back on... It wants her," he points to Amy "and maybe Willow but that's unlikely,"

"Me?" Amy goes to sit next to The Doctor on a bar stool "Why?"

"Your faith in me. That's what brought us here..."

"But why do they lose their faith before they die and start worshipping it?" Willow stands up, walking over to The Doctor as she crosses her arms.

"It needs to convert the faith into a form it can consume. Faith is an energy, the specific emotional energy the creature needs to live. Which is why at the end of her note, Lucy said -"

"Praise him," Amy mutters

"Exactly," The Doctor doesn't realise what is said before it's absolutely silent, everyone staring at Amy.

"No. Oh, please, no," Rory murmurs as they hear the Minotaur start to get close, and so, they run.

After a few minutes, Amy stops in a corridor and turns around "Amy? What are you doing?!" The Doctor asks

"He is beautiful..."

"Oh Christ," Willow rushes back for her mother.

"Leave her! Just leave her!"

"Shut up!" Alex shouts to Gibbis as Willow and The Doctor have to practically pick Amy up and drag her into a room - room number 7 to be specific.

In the room, young Amy - 7-year-old Amelia - is sitting on her suitcase, looking out of the window. Rory and Alex both try to hold the door shut as the Minotaur pounds on it. Amy drops to her knees.

"Doctor, it's happening. It's changing me. It's changing my thoughts,"

"I can't save you from this. There's nothing I can do to stop this," The Doctor says rapidly

"What?" Amy asks in alarm

"I stole your childhood and now I've led you by the hand to your death. But the worst thing is, I knew. I knew this would happen. This is what always happens," The Minotaur bursts in and Willow grabs Alex out the way.

"Forget your faith in me. I took you with me because I was vain. Because I wanted to be adored. Look at you. Glorious Pond," The Doctor grabs her face gently " the girl who waited for me. I'm not a hero. I really am just a mad man in a box. And it's time we saw each other as we really are..." The Minotaur staggers backwards into the corridor as Amy listens to The Doctor "Amy Williams, it's time to stop waiting," The Doctor kisses her forehead as The Minotaur collapses. The Doctor quickly gets upon and goes to see it whilst Rory comforts his wife.

"I severed the food supply, sacrificing their faith in me. I gave you the space to die. Shush, shush," The Doctor says to it as the hotel dissolves around them all.
