The once sleek spaceship is a burning wreck sticking out of a rock-carved building. River and Alex are watching it and The Doctor and his companions stand back slightly
"What caused it to crash?" River asks out loud
"Not us," Alex tells them.
"Nah, the airlock would've sealed seconds after you blew it. According to the Home Box, the warp engines had a phase shift. No survivors,"
"A phase shift would have to be sabotage. I did warn them," River sings, now typing things into a device.
"About what?" The Doctor says after a pause,
"Well, at least the building was empty. Aplan temple. Unoccupied for centuries," Alex informed them.
"Aren't you going to introduce us?" Amy points slightly to River "I know that's Alex...."
The Doctor doesn't seem to want to, but Poppy gives him an eyebrow raise and he introduces them reluctantly.
"Amy Pond, Professor River Song,"
"Ah, I'm going to be a Professor someday, am I?" She looks to Alex and Poppy "How exciting. But Anyway, spoilers,"
"Yeah, but who are they and how did they do that? They just left you a note in a museum,"
"Two things always guaranteed to show up in a museum. The Home Box of category four-star liner and sooner or later," River pauses "Him. It's how he keeps score,"
"Oh, we know," Poppy laughs and The Doctor frowns, causing Alex to smile at the interaction
"It's hilarious, isn't it?" River looks back at the companions and they walk forward "Don't know why you're smiling," River raises an eyebrow at Alex "you do it to,"
"I do not!" Alex protests
"Yes, you do!"
"Shut up," Alex grumbles "I'm quite popular, I can't help it if a few things I fins end up there. Although, I did once find one of my teddy bears,"
"What?"" Poppy looks up at the woman
"Yeah, that's not there after I stole it," The women laugh and The Doctor comes in-between River and Alex
"I'm nobody's taxi service,"
"We're not going to be there to catch you every time you feel like jumping out of a space ship," Poppy began
"And you are so wrong,"
"You always come for us," Alex admits quietly. She had a sudden wave of sadness, as if she'd just realised something horrifying.
"There's one survivor. There's a thing in the belly of that ship that can't ever die," River informs them
"Now he's listening," Poppy notes, noting The Doctor's eyes travel back to River and her relative.
River picks up her communicator when its beeps "You lot in orbit yet? Yeah, I saw it land. I'm at the crash site. So's Alexandra, I haven't killed her yet. It was a joke! Anyway, try and home in on my signal," River raises it up In the air "Alex, would you be a dear and sonic me? I need to boost the signal so we can use it as a beacon!"
Alex audibly groans and digs through a bag River had suddenly acquired. She rolls her eyes and brings out the blue object, pointing it up at River. She curtsy's as a thank you.
"Where'd you get that?" The Doctor asks, stalking towards her
"I made it," She says obviously "well, you and mu..." Alex pauses and closes her eyes "...Poppy helped. The TARDIS did most of the work"
Said woman's head snapped up, Alex was going to say something else. But in other news, she could half make a screwdriver
"Why that design?" Poppy inquires
"TARDIS recommended it," Alex shrugs.
---------&----------
"Where are we up to? Have we done the Bone Meadows?" River flicks through her diary. Poppy knew where they were up to, so her's was still in the TARDIS
"What's the book?" Amy asks
"Stay away from it," The Doctor warns
"What is it though?"
"Her diary," Poppy states
"You have an identical one," River reminds her
"That's where I thought I recognised it from!" Amy shouts
"Her past, some of my past that I can't remember and my future," Poppy looks downcast
"Time travel. We keep meeting in the wrong order," The Doctor explains gently, wrapping his arm around Poppy.
Four small tornadoes kick up the dust and turn into four soldiers.
"You promised me an army, Doctor Song," What looks to be the leader walks towards them "Alexandra," he nods to her in slight respect.
"No, I promised you the equivalent of an army. This is the Doctor," The man seems shocked and The Doctor salutes
"Father Octavian, Sir. Bishop, second class. Twenty clerics at my command," He shakes The Doctor's hand "The troops are already in the drop ship and landing shortly. Doctor Song was helping us with a covert investigation," he then nods to Alex "Alexandra was... supervising. Has Doctor Song explained what we're dealing with?"
"Doctor," River addresses
"What do you know of the Weeping Angels?" Alex says with confidence, but you could see the slight fear in her body language.
----------&----------
Night had fallen and the rest of the troops have arrived with their supplies in a small drop ship, like a container unit. They have set up camp around it.
"The Angel, as far as we know, is still trapped in the ship. Our mission is to get inside and neutralise it. We can't get through up top, we'd be too close to the drives," Father Octavian takes out a device with some readings on it "According to this, behind the cliff face there's a network of catacombs leading right up to the temple. We can blow through the base of the cliffs, get into the entrance chamber, then make our way up,"
"Oh, good," The Doctor says sarcastically.
"Good, sir?"
"Catacombs. Probably dark ones. Dark catacombs. Great,"
"Technically, I think it's called a maze of the dead,"
"You can stop any time you like,"
One of the soldiers calls for Octavian
"Excuse me, sir," he leaves and Poppy jumps up on to the table, Amy leaning by it.
"You're letting people call you sir. You never do that. So, whatever a Weeping Angel is, it's really bad, yeah?" Amy questions innocently
"Now that's interesting. You two are still here. Which part of wait in the TARDIS till I tell you it's safe was so confusing?" He keeps his face close to Poppy's, but glances to Amy every few words.
"You are all Mister Grumpy Face today," Poppy teases
" A Weeping Angel, Amy, Poppy, is the deadliest, most powerful, most malevolent life form evolution has ever produced, and right now one of them is trapped inside that wreckage and I'm supposed to climb in after it with a screwdriver and a torch, and assuming I survive the radiation long enough and assuming the whole ship doesn't explode in my face, do something incredibly clever which I haven't actually thought of yet. That's my day. That's what I'm up to. Any questions?"
Amy pauses "Are you and Poppy sure you're not married?" The Doctor sighs, of course it wasn't related to the topic at hand
"And are Poppy and River related?" Poppy thinks for a moment, but Amy starts again
"Or, is Alex your kid or something, because she's someone from your future, and the way she talks to you... It's like she wants to call you something else. And River talks to Poppy like they're best friends or something. I can't figure out how Alex and River are actually related though," Amy stops to catch her breath
"But, you two said you weren't married, yet you act like it, River acts like it, Alex acts like it," Amy looks at Poppy "Are you Mrs Doctor from the future?" Amy teases, then looks to The Doctor "Is she going to be your Wife some day?"
The three are silent, Poppy contemplating everything Amy had just blurted out. The Doctor speaks up "Yes, you're right" Poppy's eyes widen "I am definitely Mister Grumpy Face today," the two companions laugh.
River calls from the drop module. She has changed into a matching outfit to the soldiers. Alex is next to her in a vest, hoodie and cargo trousers, her hair is back in a loose bun and the only piece of Jewellery to be seen is the butterfly necklace from earlier.
"Why do they call him Father?" Poppy asks on their way over to River and Alex.
"He's their Bishop, they're his Clerics. It's the fifty first Century. The Church has moved on," The Doctor jumps up on slabs on his way
A grainy image of a Weeping Angel with its back towards them is on a monitor on the far wall when they enter
"What do you think? It's from the security cameras in the Byzantium vault. I ripped it when I was on board. Sorry about the quality. It's four seconds. I've put it on loop," River explains
"Yeah, it's an Angel. Hands covering its face," The Doctor automatically pushes Poppy back.
"You've encountered the Angels before?" Octavian asks
"Once, on Earth, a long time ago. But those were scavengers, barely surviving,"
"But it's just a statue,"
"A terrifying one at that," Poppy announces
"It's a statue when you see it," Alex says quietly.
"Where did it come from?"
"Oh, pulled from the ruins of Razbahan, end of last century. It's been in private hands ever since. Dormant all that time,"
"There's a difference between dormant and patient,"
"What's that mean, it's a statue when you see it?" Amy steps forward, staring at the monitor intently
"The Weeping Angels can only move if they're unseen," Alex looks back at them
"So, legend has it," River scoffs
"No, it's not legend, it's a quantum lock. In the sight of any living creature the Angels literally cease to exist. They're just stone. The ultimate defence mechanism,"
"What, being a stone?"
"Being a stone until you turn your back,"
----------&----------
Poppy is just sort of wandering about, she was slightly terrified, she couldn't not blink for the life of her. Maybe she should just go back to the TARDIS...
"Sweetie, I need you!" River shouts over to Poppy "Well, and that boyfriend of yours!"
------------&-----------
"It's so strange when he goes all Baby face," River looks down at Poppy sat on the table "you as well actually, Alex does it too. She's older now though. A few days ago, she looked fresh out the womb,"
Poppy laughs
"Your hair changes lengths quite a lot though, and you go through phases of wearing your glasses. How early is this for you?"
"Very early,"
"So, you don't know who I am yet?" River smirks
"Na, I mean I feel like I know you, and I'm comfortable around you. But y'know," Poppy gestures to her head "memory problem,"
"Eh, don't worry about it. You'll figure it out soon," River automatically kisses Poppy's forehead and she is taken back to a different time.
She can almost picture it, two girls in a plain white bedroom, a ginger woman is in a picture frame, Poppy can't identify her face, but a bundle of white blankets is in her hands. A woman in an eyepatch is telling them a story from a battered book.
"Tick tock, goes the clock,
We laughed at fate and mourned her,
Tick tock, goes the clock,
Even for The Doctor,"
The two girls sing in unison, the woman smiles and leaves.
"Doctor! It's in the room!" Poppy is thrown back into reality by Amy's scream.
The three run up to the door, Alex coming over from talking to Octavian, Poppy faltering slightly from the flashback/memory thing, she was figurin out what it was. Her mind was fuzzy as Alex, River and The Doctor just kept shouting, trying everything they can. Poppy in still slightly zoned out, but kept reminding Amy not to blink whilst she tried to open the door.
The four eventually manage to break it open, Amy is standing there in a panic, the screen is frozen on static, then it turns off.
"I froze it. There was a sort of blip on the tape and I froze it on the blip. It wasn't the image of an Angel any more. That was good, yeah? It was, wasn't it? That was pretty good,"
"That was amazing," River tell Amy
"River, hug Amy. Alex, hug Poppy,"
"Why?"
"Because I'm busy,"
"Why me though?" Poppy asks,
"You zoned out earlier, I'm assuming a memory came back to you. You look at bit lost," As soon as Alex hears this, she wraps her arms around Poppy tightly. Poppy found it slightly awkward, but happily obliged. Alex held on slightly longer than needed, But Poppy didn't complain.
They keep complimenting Amy, until an explosion distracts them. They had got through.
"Okay, now it starts," The Doctor runs off, Poppy following
"Into a creepy maze of the dead we go!"
"That's the spirit!" Alex is following them, somehow a little bit happy.
