Part 9: An unlikely Mage 1/2
The following morning, the bandit tribe escorted them all the way to Grave Village, against what most of them wanted, but it was true that no one bothered them the whole time. When they got there, the bandits had to clear out so as not to draw attention. But Camie made the threatening statement "I'm kind of interested in how this turns out, tell you what, we'll catch up to you once you reach the Dark Lands and see you off. It's a date." She winked at Shoto, who stiffened.
"It's really not necessary--" "Then we can fight," Bakugo said. "You really never get tired of saying that, do you?" Ei said.
"Whatevs," Camie disappeared into the trees with her tribe.
"And that's the one you want, huh?" Ei said to Bakugo, "There has to be an easier woman out there, man."
"Easy is for weaklings!" Bakugo declared.
"I hope this mage is easy," Deku said, "to find that is, because this place is a lot bigger than I expected."
Grave Village was more of a Ville, that is, it was easily twice the size of any village he's ever been in. The two warriors were just as awed as he was. "It's huge..." Kyoka siad.
"We'll cover more ground if we split up," Shoto suggested. "We can all meet back here in two hours, and we can take different parts of the village."
"That sounds reasonable,"Momo agreed, "Except, I don't know my way around a village at all. "It's okay," Ei said, "We can help you...not that I'm much better... actually, this place does look pretty scary."
"Why are you even still here?" Shoto asked him and Bakugo. "Don't you have other people to terrorize?" Bakugo frowned.
"You've got the map, I'm not going anywhere."
"You're not getting the map!" Shoto said.
"Says who, pretty boy?" Bakugo said, sparks flying off his hands.
"How about this: We worry about that later." Momo spoke, cutting both of them off. "Let's find Deku's mage first, then we can discuss the map. You can't have a duel here anyway. It won't hurt you to travel with us a bit longer, Bakugo, will it?" Bakugo huffed. "I'm not helping you look."
"I will," Ei offered. "I might as well do something while we're waiting."
"Cool," said Denki, "So let's go in teams of two and three then, that way everyone who doesn't know their way around can be with someone who does. I've been here a couple times."
"I can navigate a city," Shoto agreed.
"Deku, want to join us," Ei asked.
"Really?" Deku said.
"Sure," Ei said. "You need someone to make sure you don't lose that map, right? I'm your man."
"How do we know you won't just take it while he's separated from us?" Shoto frowned.
"I would never go back on a deal!" Ei was offended. "Bakugo wouldn't either." Bakugo just huffed in response.
"I guess that's all right then," Deku said. Shoto nodded, then bowed politely to Momo.
"I can escort you if you want." Momo nodded. "I suppose that's all right with me, since it's fair."
"Wait, that leaves---" Kyoka looked at Denki, "Oh no way. I'm not going with him."
"I'm not going with her!" Denki said.
Tibult bleeted in agreement. "But everyone else is already taken," Ei said.
"It's just for a couple hours," Momo said. "I mean, I suppose, we could trade..." "No, forget it" Kyoka rolled her eyes. "I won't be a wimp about this, let's just get it over with."
"I have no problem being a wimp if it gets me out of it," Denki said.
"Come on you moron," Kyoka started walking away. "We'll take the west side."
"East," Shoto went the opposite way, Momo followed quickly.
"I guess we'll go straight ahead," Ei said.
"Sure..." Deku said bravely. "We're looking for the order of Uraraka, how hard can it be to find a guild?"
The answer was very hard. Turns out there were a few different guilds in Grave Village, and none of them were the order of Uraraka, at least in the first hour. Bakugo got bored long before that point, but sank into sullen silence. Ei kept scratching his head and trying to figure out where else to go. Deku stopped and asked people for directions. People kept saying they didn't know where that guild was. Finally, though, one person said they'd heard of it. "I think it's way at the back of the village, Sonny. In the poor district."
"Thank you!" Deku was just glad to hear anything. But Bakugo finally spoke.
"Hey, Useless, doesn't it strike you as suspicious that this mage you're looking for is in the reject area of the stupid village? Maybe she's not really that powerful." "We don't know that for sure, she could just be poor." Deku said.
"That means she's weak!" Bakugo declared.
"I say we have to at least ask her first!" Deku insisted. The argument ended only with Bakugo blowing up a crate and getting distracted by the angry owner of it.
Shoto and Momo had a bit more luck, they were told earlier on where to find any less famous guilds. Shoto moved along quickly, but Momo began to lag behind as the stone pavement hurt her feet and she was trying to look at everything at once...so much so that she got distracted and nearly stepped of the edge of the street into the gutter.
"Hey!" Shoto pulled her back. "You should pay attention." "My apologies!" Momo was embarrassed. "I normally would be far more aware of my surroundings, but everything here is so different... the colors, the food... it's like another world."
"It's nothing that special," Shoto glanced around.
"Just an ordinary street, one you'd ride by every day." "Oh? Of course," Momo thought, to someone who grew up around a castle, this must seem very unimpressive. I sound like an idiot. Her armor was drawing a lot of stares also, kind of uncomfortable. She crossed her arms over it.
"Is something wrong?" Shoto asked.
"I realize I stand out a little too much to be on a covert operation." Momo said.
Shoto looked at her more closely. "I guess that is true." Momo reddened. He didn't have to say it so bluntly. Shoto glanced around. "Come here."
She blinked. "What?"
But he was already entering a small building with the words "Midnight Cloaks and hats Shoppe" over the door. Inside, Momo just about fainted. It was lined with clothes! Of all different sorts. Like a merchant band had just camped out indoors. The woman behind the counter looked up at them. "Hello, Welcome to Midnight's, where we make all your dreams come true. Buy and wear on the same day!"
"Do you have any ready-made cloaks that will fit her?" Shoto asked, with the air of one used to having his orders obeyed.
"Aren't you princely?" The woman said, smirking. "But I think we can accommodate you... let's see, I have just the thing... your color is red, I'm thinking."
"Wait..." Momo wasn't sure what was happening.
"We want something that could conceal her armor." Shoto explained, not paying attention.
"Why would you want to conceal it? That's a great look for you?" The woman said, tilting her head and looking Momo up and down. "Love your belt too, and the sword, such a nice touch. Is it real?" "Of course---" began Momo. "But this isn't really necessary--"
"We need to be more discreet,'' Shoto still wasn't paying attention.
"Oh, I see," the woman winked. "Then I've got just the thing..."
A short time later, Momo had a long red cloak that closed in the front enough to hide her armor. After this was selected, she said "But Kyoka will need one too..."
"I don't know her size," Shoto shrugged, "do you?"
"Yes, I do, we used to share clothes all the time..." Momo picked up a purplish grey cloak. "This ought to fit her, if that's all right. I can pay for this myself though. Do you take gold?"
"Gold?" The woman almost choked. "Well, uh, that might be a little over the listed price. Silver is fine." "Wouldn't it be copper?" Shoto frowned. Then "Well, it doesn't matter."
He pulled out a silver piece. "I can take care of it," Momo assured him.
"It was my idea, so I'll at least cover one." He didn't seem open for debate. Momo didn't want to be rude, so she gave in. "You sure you don't want anything else?" the woman said. "I have a great girdle section in the back--" "No." Shoto headed for the door.
"What is that?" Momo asked the woman, intrigued. The Woman gave her a look. "Oh... nevermind. You just run along now. Your gentleman is waiting."
"My--? Oh," Momo didn't get the insinuation. She just left.
Shoto was waiting outside. "That actually took longer than I thought it would..." he muttered. "It must have been an hour already." "That was very kind of you," Momo said sweetly. "Though, I could have just made these things myself."
"You can make clothes?" Shoto was surprised.
"It takes a little more effort than weapons, but I can." Momo confirmed. "But, that was fun. I've never been in a shop before, so I don't mind doing it like that." She smiled. "Actually, I think I may just do it that way from now on. It was so exciting! All the different colors and styles, I could never think of that many on my own, it was like some elaborate hunt." Shoto stared at her.
"They're just clothes..." he said. "Why are you so excited?"
"Just clothes? Clothes can convey a lot about a person!" Momo insisted. She sounded like the shop owner now. Shoto shielded his eyes.
"I think I see another guild, look." Momo looked. "It does look like one, we should hurry, the others might be there already."
Kyoka and Denki were having a less pleasant time searching the west side. A lot of scary looking taverns and inns were in this part of town. "I don't think we're going to find a guild here," Denki said.
"Just shut up and keep trying," Kyoka said crossly. Denki muttered to himself imitating her way of talking. Tibult put her head down like she was bored too.
"We should just ask someone where we can find the guild." Denki said.
"I doubt we can trust anyone around here," Kyoka said. "Why, because they're men?" Denki said. There were women around too.
"Because they look shifty," Kyoka said.
"Everyone looks shifty to you," Denki said. "You just have to know how to talk to people." He moved toward an inn.
"Excuse me," he said to someone outside of it, turning on the charisma. Kyoka crossed her arms and tapped her foot, waiting. People passed by, someone dumped a load of garbage in the street next to her, to her disgust.
"Ew," she scurried to the other side. "Villagers are so banal."
"Penny for the poor?" Someone startled her by holding out a wooden bowl with some small coins in it. Kyoka eyed the dirty, shabby owner uncertainly. "Uh... sure, I guess."
She pulled out a coin and dropped it in. The beggar took it and bit it. "That's a fine coin... where's the insignia from?"
"Warrior Tribe." Kyoka didn't think much of this.
"One of the warrior tribes? What brings a girl like you to a nasty village like this?" The beggar said, with some irony. "Looking for a mage." Kyoka said disinterestedly. "You wouldn't know where I could find the guild with the order of Uraraka in it, do you?"
The beggar's eyes lit up. "Uraraka you say? I know exactly who you're looking for. Just go through this alley and around the corner, small place, but there's a big sign, you can't miss it."
"Really?" That was easier than she thought.
"Sure thing," the beggar said. "Consider it thanks for your generosity. But watch your step, there's untrustworthy people around here. A girl like you probably isn't experienced enough to spot them. You really shouldn't wander around alone."
"I--" Kyoka hesitated to mention she had a bard for a guide, that was pretty humiliating. "--Have friends... anyway, I can take care of myself."
"Better get a move on then, honey." The beggar sat back. Kyoka glanced down the alley, it wasn't very long. She could probably pop down it, locate the building, and then come back for the stupid bard before he even noticed she was gone. No reason to wait for him to be done chatting up some idiot at the inn. She squared her shoulders and walked down the narrow street and turned the corner--but she saw nothing there at all except a dead end. Was it the left? She turned the other way. There was a small building there, but it looked abandoned. Maybe she misunderstood those directions. She headed back down the alley--or at least she tried, suddenly she seemed to hit an invisible wall. She fell on her backside and blinked at the glowing circular pattern around her, then she cursed. It was a trap.
